▌THE SOUNDS OF GROANS MIXED with the sound of the wind gusting against the two was the only thing they could hear.

vi held the side of her body, taking a second to remove her hand and view the blood that smeared against her palm. "jesus, vi." maeve groaned as she also watched.

"vi!" the two of them stopped in their tracks as they both heard a thick accent call for the girl hanging on maeves shoulder.

they both looked over their shoulders, seeing a dark blue haired girl run up to them. a jacket sat over a dark blue and gold outfit. something similar to the enforcers uniform.

"caitlyn.." vi said weakly, "what happened?" she asked as she stared down at the girls torso. "and who is this?" her eyebrows furrowed as she looked at maeve.

"who the hell are you?" maeve asked afterwards, not answering the girls question before she got her own answer. "caitlyn." she said, raising her eyebrows, now awaiting her question to be answered.

"maeve." her tone was clear and stern, vi stared up at maeve as caitlyn and the girl just stared at eachother for a quick moment.

"great, we all met, now can we please get me over there." the pink haired girl said with attitude. maeve adjusted vi on her shoulder which caused her to let out a rusted grunt.

the two of them starting to walk again as caitlyn trailed close behind, her eyes wandering around. the three of them all stared up at the large neon purple sign that sent hues over the whole area.

"what the hell is that?" vi asked curiously, "a sign." caitlyn informed. "no shit, really?" the brunette said, rolling her eyes, attitude mixed with sarcasm laced in her voice.

"nevermind. just help me to the edge." vi told maeve. as she did as vi told her to do, she held back a smirk, a small feeling of knowing whats about to happen jogging her mind.

the three girls stared down towards the beams and pillars that supported the large sign, caitlyns eyes filled with worry while maeves was filled with amusement.

"can you do this in your—" caitlyn was cut off by vi jumping off the edge, landing harshly on the beam. "you comin'?" maeve smirked before following her former bestfriends lead.

vi harshly smacked on the ground as maeve swiftly jumped from each beam, jumping down to meet vi as she then heard the sounds of caits boots stepping along on top of them.

"i've got ya'." maeve said as she used her strength to lift vi off the ground again. vi's breaths were heavy but shallow. her chest moving up and down at a slow pace, trying to catch her breath.

caitlyn finally reached the ground, leaning herself on the wall behind her before meeting up with the two.

they all noticed a man covered with a cloak at a distance while they walked. he gagged, his hands outstretched, multiple signs proving he's infected with something unholy.

"what is this place?" caitlyn asked wearily. "it's where the kind of people you topsiders don't wanna think about, wind up." vi answered weakly, still holding onto maeve.

a man from the behind shadows started to whimper, his hands out with desperation as he begged forward. maeve sent him a small look before continuing forward.

caitlyn clicked her flashlight on, facing it towards him as he snarled, crawling away, afraid of the light.

"and no one wants to end up here." maeve added on, her eyebrows furrowed and serious. "it was never this big though." vi looked around, noticing more and more infected and homeless people.

maeve began helping vi over to a small wooden platform, leaning her up against a large pole. she let out a grunt as she landed against it, then maeve started to look around.

"we need to get this healed up," she stated. "that'd be a great idea." vi rolled her eyes as she started to drift off in thought.

"caitlyn, clean her up. i'll find something." maeve said as she stood up, her hands ripping away from vi's shoulders.

caitlyn pulled a small rag from her pocket, bringing herself down onto her knees beside vi, then giving a look to the pink haired girl before staring to put it to her face.

vi immediately blocked her arm, "if anyones gonna do it, its her." she nodded towards maeve, looking through her eyebrows as her head hung low.

maeve rolled her eyes, her eyes landing on the two of them again. "if this chick goes to find anything, she'll most likely find some sort of poison and kill you instead of healing you. or better yet, get herself killed."

"excuse me—" the girl started to protest, "so you either let her clean the shit stained blood off of your face or let her kill you. your choice, princess" she mocked the nickname she was recently given.

maeve crossed her arms over her chest, a stern look on her face while vi watched her with cautious eyes. "fine." vi agreed, pulling her hand away from blocking caitlyns.

maeve then hummed as she then started to walk away.

she started walking down and past the shadows that were filled with shimmer infected people. her mind set on finding what she needed to heal vi.

as she walked down a dark alley, she finally reached the rotten store. wood decayed as broken metal objects hung from it, a large metal grid window sat on a ledge.

maeves hands flicked the small chimes, alerting the creature inside that someone was there for business. the cold metal almost burning her hands.

a monster with rotten teeth with many different unflattering features the opened the window, a snarl leaving its mouth before speaking. "ailment?"

her voice was croaky, gruff. like sandpaper scratched along her throat everytime she spoke. "stabbed. i need something quick." maeve ordered.

the monster snarled once again, closing the window harshly as she stood there. her eyes moved around the area, the only thing lighting it up were the few small crystals that hung on the metal.

she ran her fingers through her hair as she waiting for a short second, her arms crossing over her chest once again.

a large growl emerged from behind the window as it was opened again, the familiar sound of the metal scraping mixed along with it.

a small vial of something was put on the table. "trade."

maeve rolled her eyes, patting around her body until she felt the pistol that sat in her waistband. she let out a small sigh, pulling it out slamming it on the table infront of the creature.

the creature split a small drop of shimmer into the potion she had made, causing it to glow a slight purple hue. then sliding it underneath the window.

maeve gave a nod before the window was slammed in her face, she rolled her eyes before turning around. her boots clacked against the ground as she walked back the same way she came.

she held the vial in her hand, staring into it as she walked. her mind raced.

sure, she had hatred in her chest for the girl who had abandoned her, but yet, the love in her heart was still there. nothing could change that, no betrayal, no torture, nothing.

maeve hated to admit it, shoving the thoughts out of her head. "it'll work." she whispered to herself, because she didn't know what she'd do if it didn't.

her feet finally reached the two, seeing vi had blacked out, caitlyn sitting beside her, her hand holding onto the stab to compose the bleeding.

"i'm here." maeve said simply, immediately rushing over to the pink haired girl, caitlyn swiftly moving out if the way.

"vi," she said softly, "c'mon, vi." she repeated.

"work, c'mon." maeve murmured once more. then, the girls eyes fluttered open slightly, weakly, but they were open.

maeve immediately got onto her knees, sitting in between vi's legs as she leaned forward. dripping the potion into her mouth as she held it open with her thumb, then closing it softly so it could fall down her throat.

maeve watched the girl closely, noticing vi's eyes glow purple bright purple before letting out a scream, jolting forward, straight into mae's arms.

the brunette quickly caught her, her hand planted on her shoulder while her other one landed on her chest. vi beathes heavy, small whimpers left her mouth as she tried calming herself.

maeve lowered her back down onto the wall, before watching vi started to jolt back up again with a large huff. "easy, easy, i've got you." maeve hushed with a soft, comforting voice.

"you're okay." the sudden short distance between them grew tension that could be cut clean with a knife. the two of them feeling eachothers heavy breaths on their faces.

vi stared into the hazel green eyes that stared right back into her blue ones. maeves gaze snapped between her lips and her eyes, heavy breaths still following out of vi's mouth.

maeves hand soon started to raise up, soon starting to caress vi's cheek, her thumb moving slow and steady against her skin.

"we need you back on your feet." caitlyn spoke up, causing the two of them to snap out of it. maeve quickly moved away, causing vi to feel cold without the warmth of her touch.

"what was the name sevika gave you? jinx?" caitlyn asked. looking over her shoulder and seeing maeve pacing after she had shot up onto her feet, her hips swaying as her hair flew with the non existent wind.

vi sighed, sitting up. her hand removing from the wound, seeing as there was no blood anymore, just a bloody splotch that stained her shirt.

the potion obviously had started working. yet she was still weak, "right, jinx. how could i forget?" vi said quietly.

maeve looked down at vi, faint memories flooding her brain as she remembered the way it fell from vi's lips that night.

she wasn't jinx to the two, she was powder. the little girl that would literally draw on anything she could, the little girl who would hysterically laugh at any joke that was said. the little sister they had always loved and adored.

"we're going to have to be more careful now." caitlyns thick accent rang through the air, once again snapping maeve from her trance. "silco could he watching every move we take— its becoming a risk." caitlyn finished.

the sound of rumbling scared the three, their gaze flying up to notice the large sign now started to shake atop of them. dust falling on top of their shoulders due to the sudden movement.

maeve walked over next to caitlyn afterwards, watching as she ran her finger tip over multiple names on one of the large poles. ones in which consisted of 'violet, powder and maeve'

maeve then moved infront of her, a small gasp leaving caitlyns mouth out of shock. tears welded in her eyes as she noticed it.

caitlyns eyes looked between caitlyn and maeve before looking over behind the pilar, multiple coloured drawings sat on the wall.

"you used to live here?" she asked wearily, furrowing her eyebrows with curiosity. "back in the day." maeve shrugged, hidden emotion behind her voice.

"who's powder?" she looked towards vi, whos head hung low. vi let out a small exhale, "my sister— well, our sister. i thought she died, but... no." she explained, shaking her head slightly, hanging it lowly.

"i have to try and find her." vi looked up towards caitlyn. maeve stayed silent, knowing the truth behind it all, knowing who she really was these days.

"how do you not know if your sister is alive or dead?"

vi scoffed, "it's hard to check up on people from inside a concrete cell." she said cockily, standing up from the platform she had been sitting on.

"and you?" caitlyn then nodded towards maeve, "when shes no where to be found, after years of searching, the idea is kind of just planted in your head that shes nothing but dead."

she lied right through her teeth. she knew she was alive, she knew who she was. but she still had no idea where she truly was nor whether she was safe or not.

caitlyn shook her head. "what, you don't have parents?" attitude laced behind the confronting question. maeve grew annoyed with each sudden and invading question.

"no. they were killed by enforcers. all of our parents were." vi started getting emotional with anger as she stepped forward, caitlyn letting out a small gasp as she heard the answer.

"whats up with the nosy ass questions? what are you trying to do?" maeve stepped forward even closer to caitlyn, beside vi.

"gosh, what is your problem with me—" maeve started answering caitlyns question immediately by cutting her off quickly.

"my problem is that i have absolutely no idea who you are, you're obviously hiding an enforcers uniform behind that dirty ass jacket and your asking these fuckass questions that mean nothing to you. not to mention your suddenly interested in this whole silco situation for what reason, exactly?"

maeve answered, each word being more and more aggressive. her eyebrows furrowed as she pointed her finger, landing it on her chest and pushing her backwards.

before caitlyn could defend herself, there were multiple large metal clangs, dark eerie noises filled the area as the wood underneath their feet creaked.

maeve and the other two girls turned around and listened in, multiple exclaims and begs were heard from behind the rotten wooden door.

suddenyly, vi stepped forward, opening it with caution before noticing what was infront of them, maeve following quickly afterwards.

silco stood at a distance, vials of shimmer in his hands as the shimmer addicts sat and begged around him. a small chuckle leaving his throat as all three of the girls eyes widened.

silco looked up at all of them with his head still low, the glaring orange eye staring right up at the two girls that stood in the door frame.

meanwhile, caitlyn still stood at a large wooden pole, doing everything she can, slamming herself into it to try and knock it down.

"vander's prodigy," silco's voice daring, gruff and low as he left a small smirk on his face. the addicts whimpered underneath the man, silco teasing them with the glowing purple liquid.

"i've regretted that we never had the opportunity to speak," a pause lingered in between the distance of the man and the two girls.

"what have you done with my sister?" vi spoke up, her voice echoing against the broken concrete walls, her hand out infront of maeve slightly, as if protecting her.

"i've freed her." his voice was low and evil. it sent shivers down maeves spine as it bounced in her head, like every other memory.

"candidly, i thought you were the prize of your secondhand family. maybe even little maeve." his thick accent spoke, "but jinx," a pause. "oh. she is more than i ever imagined." he shook his head with a slight chuckle.

"i'm gonna find her, and erase whatever fucked-up delusions you put in her head." vi's voice was filled with determination. "but first, im gonna bring your bullshit empire down all around you."

"you don't know your limits, girl. it's what got vander killed. what drove your sister away. and it's why i'm here right now." the addicts that surrounded silco started to walk forward.

maeve shook her head as vi raised her fists. "fucking hell..." maeve groaned quietly as she immediately ran away and back into the pole caitlyn had still been standing at.

"yeah well," a pause stuck in vi's voice, "you talk to much."

just as vi finished her sentence. maeve slammed her body into the pole, the whole thing crumbling on top of them as screws and bolts started flying.

loud clangs bounced off the walls as the sign started to fall, the wooden beams snapping as the metal bent against itself.

vi grabbed ahold of caitlyns arm, running straight out of the area, maeve ran beside them, quickly moving her feet and starting to move faster then the two of them.

"hurry up! come on!" she shouted over the loud noises of everything happening behind them, ushering the two girls to make a move.

suddenly, the sign fell completely, the compact of it hitting the ground causing the area surrounding to shake violetly, dust clogging up.

the three of them reached the wall, their fingers digging into the hard surface as they climbed. "go, vi. i'm right behind you." maeve groaned as she noticed vi trying to wait for the girl.

maeve was in too much of a panic to keep up her grudge for the moment. worried about vi, even caitlyn as they did their best to escape the scene.

vi reached the top, caitlyn pulling her up with struggle. maeves face screwed up as she struggled to find the strength to pull herself up, all of it escaping her body after causing an insanely heavy sign to crash down.

vi's hand reached down the wall, mae took a breath before reaching for it. their hands clasping together with a small clap, vi pulled her up as heavy breaths left their lungs.

the three of them panted, their breath lost before realising they had to run away once again. their feet moved fast against the gravelled surface just like before.

vi stopped once noticing a tunnel the three of them could slide down. and as vi did, caitlyn followed. maeve contemplated for a moment.

did she really wanna follow? did she really wanna find out the truth after everything? what would happen if she did follow? is she better off without her, its been this long.

but she shook her head, every thought leaving her mind as she immediately started climbing in and sliding down swiftly behind the two girls.

the three of them slid out, starting to walk away as they continued escaping from the disaster behind them.

vi's body slammed into another mans by accident, her back immediately turning back around to face the man as he grew obviously irritated. an argument broke out, causing vi to aggressively push the man.

caitlyn quickly rushed over, apologising to the man before maeve shoved her, shaking her head "don't, it'll make it worse, trust me." she said before running to vi.

maeves hand landed on her shoulder as she shoved her away from the situation. vi's middle finger rising towards the dude. "your an idiot." maeve shoved her again, a slight chuckle leaving her mouth.

as they started to run again. the brunette was shocked to look up and see bright blue smoke emerging from a large, abandoned building. vi's eyes followed hers, the two of them suddenly reminded of what it could've meant.

wherever you are, light it up. and i'll find you. i promise.

the memory hung in the air for a moment. before caitlyn grabbed vi's arm, pulling her away. maeve was stuck in her spot though, "it can't be..." she whispered to herself.

"maeve, come on!" the thick accent rung through the girls ears, causing her to snap out of her trance, now following behind the girls. but not without another look.

it couldn't be. it couldn't be. it couldn't be.

the thought bounced inside of maeves head. and little did she know, it was doing the same inside vi's.
