꒰ ❛ tragedy follows everywhere ❜ ꒱
▌VARIOUS WEAPONS WERE SPREAD out before the three teenagers. "well, if the enforcers hit tonight, we'll be ready," mylo said, voice calm but determined.
"dibs on the bat," claggor grinned, eyes fixed on it with a sense of awe.
"gun's mine," mylo declared loudly. maeve immediately screwed up her face, her brows furrowing in disapproval. "with your aim? you'd shoot my head off before you even see the enforcers. it's mine."
"no, no, no, no, no. i found it," mylo argued,
"and i am not letting you blow our brains out, don't be a sore loser." she winked, grabbing the gun in her hands.
"okay then i want the bat!" mylo groaned before turning towards claggor. "dude! respect the dibs!" claggor said, "i literally found it?" mylo argued.
"i called it first!" claggor exclaimed.
"stop being such a big baby." mylo rolled his eyes, the two continued their bickering until the basement door creaked open. vi rushed down the stairs, her expression tense, her body language rigid.
the boys fell silent, while maeve immediately noticed the weight of vi's presence, the way she carried herself, the tightness in her shoulders.
"where's the—" violet started, but before she could finish, powder ran up to vi, throwing herself into her and wrapping her arms around her waist.
"you're back!" powder exclaimed, powder slammed herself into vi with a hug, a small gasp leaving vi's mouth. though she didn't reciprocate the hug, instead letting out a shaky breath while watching powders face drop as she looked up at her big sister.
tears started flooding vi's eyes as she moved out of powders grip. maeve immediately shot up out of her seat. walking past the the boys and immediately over to vi.
vi reached for the metal boxing gloves on the table, her fingers trembling. "hey, those are vander's," mylo said, grabbing her wrist before she could take them. "slow down. what's going on?"
her breath came in shaky gasps, and it took her a moment to find her voice. "benzo's dead," she managed, her voice cracking.
maeve felt her heart drop into her stomach.
"dead?" she whispered, her breath catching in her throat.
claggor, as if reading her mind, repeated it louder.
"and they took vander."
the words hit maeve like a blow to the chest. her heart twisted. "you're lying," she whispered, her voice barely audible, disbelief overwhelming her.
"who took vander?" mylo asked, stepping forward, the urgency in his voice cutting through the air.
vi lowered her head, her shoulders slumping. "i don't know. but i need to help him."
"we're going with you," mylo said without hesitation, stepping closer and looking at the pink haired girl.
"whatever killed benzo... it was like nothing i've ever seen," vi continued, voice shaking as she relived the horror. her fists clenched as she remembered the moment. "it tore him apart." her voice faltered, and before anyone could say anything, vi broke into sobs.
maeve was at her side instantly, pulling her into a tight embrace. "i've got you," she whispered, her voice thick with the effort to hold back her own tears, trying to be strong for vi.
"you're not doing this alone, vi," claggor said, his tone softer than usual, as he wrapped an arm around them both.
"he's our father too," mylo added, joining the group, his voice quiet as be did he best to reassure the girl.
"we'll get him back. we'll do anything we can," maeve said, her hands cupping vi's face as she wiped away the tears. "we'll figure this out, okay?"
mylo looked at vi, his expression intense. "do we know where they took him?"
"ekko followed them. the old cannery, next to the docks," vi said, her eyes briefly meeting powder's as the younger girl stood quietly by the stairs, holding her small bag.
vi sighed, turning towards the girl. "i need you to stay behind, powder."
vi let out a sigh. while the other three were watched with worry. "i need you to sit this one out, powder."
powders face dropped in an instant. "what?" she asked confused. "you're not coming." vi replied.
"i'm not afraid," powder said, shaking her head defiantly.
"it's too dangerous," vi responded, her voice firm.
"but families stick together, you said it yourself," powder argued, a hint of desperation in her voice as she leaned forward.
vi's patience snapped. "i know what i said," she spat, voice harsh, eyes blazing with protective fury.
powder stepped closer, her voice trembling. "i want to fight. i can help."
vi's eyes darkened. "you're not ready," she hissed through clenched teeth. powder flinched, hurt flashing across her face. she took a step back, looking at vi with wide, wounded eyes.
vi softened immediately, her expression faltering. "you're the only family i have left," she whispered, cupping powder's cheek. "i can't lose you."
powder's lips trembled as she leaned into her sister's touch, then pulled away reluctantly.
"here," vi said, pressing a smoke light into her hand. "if they come for you, take this and run. wherever you are, light it up. and i'll find you. i promise."
the two girls shared a long, quiet moment, their foreheads touching, before vi stepped back. the others followed, but maeve lingered a moment longer. "i'll see you soon, okay?" she said softly, placing a gentle kiss on powder's temple.
powder nodded, a small, shaky smile crossing her face. maeve gave her one last glance before joining the others, her heart heavy but resolute.
as the four of them prepared for what was to come, maeve couldn't shake the feeling that things were about to spiral even further out of control. but she would be there. they all would.
the four of them snuck into the old cannery through a broken window, violet leading the group as they crept forward, crouching low to stay out of sight.
violet peered around the corner, spotting the long, dimly lit hallway. then, her heart dropped. there he was— vander, strapped to a chair, battered and bruised, his face swollen and unrecognizable.
without a word, she gave the others hand signals, and they moved quickly toward him, stopping just short of where he sat.
vander spat out a mouthful of blood, his head hanging low, too weak to hold it up.
"vi?" he croaked, and violet didn't hesitate. she rushed forward, throwing herself into his arms. he nuzzled into her neck, but the relief was short-lived as he whispered, "what are you doing here?"
"we're breakin' you out," maeve answered for her, giving a smirk to mask the fear creeping up her spine. "mylo."
violet pulled away, giving him room to work. "on it," mylo said, already crouching down to pick the locks on vander's restraints.
"how— how did you get in? there's guards everywhere," vander asked, but maeve and violet were already pacing, their eyes scanning the room with growing disgust.
"easy. we found an open window and..." violet's voice faltered as realization hit her.
"oh god. you have to get out. now." vander exclaimed.
"no way—" maeve started, but before she could protest further, a loud, echoing voice filled the air.
"welcome!" the voice was thick with menace, and the heavy footsteps that followed sent a chill down maeve's spine.
violet's eyes widened in fear as a man rounded the corner. one side of his face was scarred, his eye a dark, swollen, purple mess.
"you have my congratulations," he said, his accent heavy, dripping with mockery. "but I'm afraid this will be a very short reunion."
his minions appeared behind him, one by one filling the doorway and surrounding them, eyes cold and calculating.
maeve's stomach churned. everything about this felt wrong. this was not how it was supposed to go. her gut twisted, the sense of impending disaster nearly choking her.
"have you heard the rumor?" the scarred man continued, his voice oozing with venom. "vander the coward fled town with his children. and they were never seen again."
the threat was clear, and maeve's scowl deepened.
claggor had managed to break one of vander's restraints, the loud metal clank causing maeve to flinch.
violet, not wasting a second, used her teeth to tighten vander's metal boxing gloves, securing them over her knuckles. "claggor, see if you can find another way out of here," she ordered. he nodded and rushed off.
vander, still struggling, spoke in a low voice, "you don't have to do this."
"yes, i do," violet replied firmly, looking over her shoulder as her expression hardened. maeve, watching from the corner, subtly pulled out her gun, keeping it hidden but ready.
"vi. you aren't alone," maeve said, she nodded while her hand rested on violet's shoulder.
violet turned, nodding silently with a small smile before turning back to face their enemies.
with a deep breath, she strode forward, fists raised. her determination was easily detected, even as vander shouted her name, concern lacing his voice.
the man blocking her path was massive. an ogre of a thing, holding a blade in his hand. without warning, he swung at violet, but she blocked his strike before landing a solid uppercut to his jaw. the blow sent him stumbling back, his face twisted in shock.
the fight was on.
maeve watched, heart in her throat, as violet continued to battle the others. one by one, they charged at her, but violet dispatched them with brutality, throwing each of them off the edge of the bridge, their screams echoing into the abyss.
meanwhile, mylo struggled with the locks. his hands were shaky, but he refused to stop, the pressure mounting with every second that passed.
"mylo. take a breath. you can do this," vander encouraged from his seat, his voice strained but steady. mylo nodded as he listened, finally focusing.
maeve's breath hitched as she watched violet fend off their attackers. but her heart nearly stopped when one of them came up behind her, grabbing vi in a headlock.
maeve's mind raced. she couldn't stand back anymore. she had to act. she had to do something, anything.
mylo was working faster now, his hands nearly frantic as he continued to pick at the locks. claggor, meanwhile, was digging around, trying to find a way out.
maeve pulled her gun from behind her back, her hand shaking as she aimed it. her mind started to race, multiple different thoughts speaking to her.
killing someone? you're a monster. just like those enforcers. just like them and how they killed innocent people. you'll be known as the girl who murdered.
maeve shook her head, rushing them all away, "they're not innocent." she whispered. maeve's face hardened as she steeled herself. the sound of her gunshot rang out, the bullet hitting its target, one of the attackers, square in the forehead.
without hesitation, she pulled the trigger again, her face set in stone as this bullet hung in the air, hitting the next attacker smack bang in the chest.
violet, hearing the shot, glanced back at her. maeve put the gun down, facing the ground. offering a small scowl as if daring anyone to challenge her. vi gave her a quick wink before returning her focus to the fight.
but as she finally knocked the last one out, a deafening scream could be heard from the other end of the bridge. maeve watched as the large creature stepped forward.
a creature, towering and monstrous, appeared at the other end of the bridge. its veins pulsed with neon purple fluid, its skin dark grey, and its eyes gleamed like burning embers.
it hissed, and screamed, throwing one of the fallen minions off the ledge like it was nothing, before turning toward violet.
maeve's breath caught in her throat. she raised her gun, but it was useless. with every shot the creature seemed more and more invincible.
"mylo, hurry," vander whispered, his voice thick with worry.
violet charged at the creature, climbing onto the railing to get closer, but before she could land a blow, the creature's arm shot out, grabbing her by the throat.
"vi!" maeve screamed, her heart shattering as she watched violet struggle weakly in the creature's grip.
"silco. let her go." vander said viciously, the tone in his voice was something they had never heard before. "this is between you and me." he shouted towards the evil man.
"you had your chance," silco sneered, his eyes fixed on the struggle.
one of the boxing gloves fell to the floor with a thud, but the creature didn't notice, too focused on its prey.
"vi!" vander cried, but maeve couldn't watch. not anymore. tears filled her eyes as the creature moved closer.
and then, in a rush of adrenaline, maeve bolted forward, helping violet into a nearby room, dragging her as quickly as she could. once inside, they slammed the door shut, the metal grinding against the floor, sparks flying as they locked it.
the creature began pounding on the door, its blows sending shockwaves through the room.
mylo was up to the last lock, vander looked between the girls as they struggled to breath and hold the door. "you did good." vander nodded. the two of them smiled.
"i'm proud of you." maeve said in between grunts, in return violet gave her a kiss on the cheek. her lips were soft, softer then she'd ever imagine. something about it made her immediately go insane. but she didn't know what.
claggor groaned as he finally broke through the wall. just as the last lock clicked, the roof collapsed, concrete slabs raining down on them.
maeve cried out as a wooden pillar impaled mylo. the room filled with chaos and dust, and then everything went black.
the explosion had knocked her unconscious.
when she woke, the world was in ruins. her heart dropped as she saw her best friends' lifeless bodies scattered around the room. the pain was unbearable.
but then, through the rubble, vander stirred. his head slowly lifting as he realized the same thing she had moments before.
the sudden sounds of violets sobs brought relief to her, yet her heart ached even more with every sob. vander watched as this happened, his determination kicked in as he noticed his children, his muscles straining as he freed himself from the rubble.
doing anything he can to get the amounts of concrete off of his back.
everything then rumbled from behind him, successfully getting it all off.
maeves teary eyes watched it happen, and sudden encouragement rubbed over her body. using whatever muscle she could scrounge up, she gripped against the rubble and started to lift it up.
it felt like her arms were about to fall straight off of her body as she continued lifting it. she watched as vander walked out of the room, two metal handles in his hands as weapons.
and while he fought. maeve got herself free, she had cuts everywhere, her pony tail had been worned out and she was in an immense amount of pain. her waist injury didn't help anything.
but despite it all, she immediately rushed over to vi. "i've got you, i've got you." she started to reassure the girl. her sobs became louder, her eyes stuck on mylo and claggors bodies that were stuck under everything.
maeve used the rest of her strength, grabbing ahold of the large and heavy metal materials and lifting it off of her body. "go, violet! go!" violet immediately started to climb out. her body weak as she sat up.
maeve immediately fell into violets arms. the two of them tightly held together as they mourned what had just happened. "i've got you." maeve finally said before letting go.
the two of them now facing silco and vander as vander choked silco.
"no!" vi shouted loudly. silco pulled his arm back, stabbing a knife right into the large mans stomach. "no! please!" maeve cried out. "vander!" maeve screamed as she noticed him getting weaker.
"i knew you still had it in you." silco finally said as vander became limp on his shoulder. then pushing him off of the bridge and into the fire. a large sound of glass smashing is was filled maeves ears.
"find the girls." silco ordered.
the large creature walked into the room, noticing the two girls on the ground, watching how it all happened. the creature growled as he stepped forward.
but confusion immediately covered their faces. as a large bang sounded, the bridge bending slightly.
the two girls watched as another creature suddenly grabbed ahold of the other monsters neck, the same way he had watched him once do with violet.
violet and maeve gasp as they notice who the monster is. he growled as he started moving forward, but once noticing his two daughters infront of him, vander turned away.
holding his head as he supported himself on the railing. a large growl emerged from his throat as he started charging for silco.
"silco!" he screamed. but once noticing the way the building started to catch on fire, he completely disgarded his plan on destroying silco. instead, rushing over to grab a hold of maeve and violet.
smashing the glass as he slammed himself into the window. a loud and large slam as they landed on the ground. vander snarled, gasping for air as violet gripped onto the mans chest. tears falling from her eyes.
"vander." she lifted the mans head, noticing how hard hes gasping for air. "take care of powder.." he gasped, "love maeve more then anything." his head suddenly fell back.
his last breath had been taken. violets heart had been ripped from her body, a blood curdling 'no!' emerged from her bones.
the girl cried against his chest. before noticing how maeve's eyes still hadn't opened. her breathing was shallow and it seemed like any second she could lose her.
and then, everything fell silent. the world, as it was, ceased to exist. everything changed in seconds.
sweat drenched her body as fire raged around her, the heat pressing down from all sides. she lay flat on her back, her eyes fluttering open, but the blurry vision offered no clarity.
as she tried to move, a limp body beneath her sent a chill through her. the familiar weight. her breath caught in her throat, and her eyes widened. she scrambled to her knees, her hands trembling as they hovered over the man she had been lying on.
when her gaze met vander's face, everything shattered. it was as if the whole night rewound, playing out the loss once more. another person she couldn't bear to lose. another parent ripped away.
"no! not again! not again, please!" her voice cracked, desperation seeping into every word as she shook him, pleading with him. "don't fucking do this to me!" she sobbed, violently rocking his body against the burning concrete.
the scream that tore from her throat was raw, furious, and primal. it echoed in the night air, a scream that shook the very foundation of everything. she sobbed harder, her breath ragged as she clung to him.
"vi! powder!" she screamed, her voice desperate, loud enough to reverberate through the whole city. "violet! please!" but there was no answer. there was no one else to be seen.
she started coughing violently, the smoke from the flames started to invade her lungs. "i love you, i'm sorry. i love you," she whispered between gasps, her legs trembling as she forced herself to stand and stumble through the fire.
the sound of her black boots slapping against the hard ground was all she could hear, her cries muffled as she slid down the concrete wall, watching in horror as the flames consumed vander's body.
anger surged through her, hot and unforgiving. she wiped her tears with the back of her wrist, her face hardening. "fuck," she muttered, rising to her feet, her resolve returning with each shaky breath.
without another thought, she ran.
her feet hit the ground faster now, the pain of her body forgotten. the wind tore through her hair, now loose and wild, and the emptiness of the dark streets brought a strange comfort.
everything felt surreal, effortless. the pain faded with every step, every breath. it was all just numb. numbness was easier. numbness meant nothing could hurt anymore.
it was the same feeling she had when her birth parents died— numbness. the days she would lay in bed, crying until she couldn't feel anymore. it was the only way to survive.
so she ran. as fast as she could, far away from everything, because for once, numbness was all she had left.
she was truely alone.
