Don't Be Mean

Monday, December 27th, 9:00, I read my alarm clock.
Yes! I thought. Still winter break. I thought I was going to be late for school for a second.
"Molly! Come here, sweetie," mom called me. My thoughts interrupted, I went down the stairs.
"Yeah, mom?" I said, wondering why my mom wasn't in her I'm-not-going-outside-so-I-don't-need-to-change clothes.
"Look, I need to run a few errands. Dad already left for work. You are in charge of your younger sister,"she answered. "Just make sure she doesn't get into any trouble, darling. I already talked to her and if she doesn't listen to you, she'll get in trouble," she said as she walked out the front door. In charge of Meme? Great!
"Meme!" I called
"What do you want?"she asked, appearing at the top of the staircase.
"I'm in charge of you!" I said, smirking.
"So what? I don't care. I don't have to serve you."
"I can make you, and if you don't, you'll get in trouble!"
"No, I won't. I complained to Mom that you would tell me to do your chores for you. Mom said that I didn't have to do anything for you."
     "So?"
"You can stop me, but you can't make me."
"Well, that's too bad. Mom didn't tell me about that, so ha! And if you don't do the things I tell you to do, then later, I'll tell mom that you went into my room and touched all my stuff."
"You can't do that!"
"Don't worry, Meme, I will. Okay, first of all, if you don't do what I tell you to do, I'm totally gonna text Mom right away that you're not listening to me. Now, take out the trash," I smiled happily. When Meme didn't move, I reached for my phone in my back pocket. Then Meme slowly came down the stairs.
"Faster," I told her. She walked faster. She picked up the trash and went outside. I didn't bother to go outside with her. Who would if they didn't have to? When she came back a few minutes later, I told her to make up my room. Just to make her jealous, I told her that for the rest of the day, I was going to watch movies and eat popcorn while she served me. Meme shrugged and went into my room.
The day flew past with Meme ending up doing all my Saturday chores: Taking out the trash, cleaning up my room, washing the dishes, weeding the garden, and wiping the kitchen and dining room floor. I just sat there and watched 4 or 5 movies with Meme getting the movies started and making popcorn.
When I heard mom's car driving in, I hurried and made Meme sit beside me. She told me she didn't finish her own chores, and I just laughed because when we didn't do all our chores, or did it horribly, that person would have to do extra chores the next day.
When mom came in, she looked angry. I guessed that she was mad at Meme for not finishing her chores at first, but soon, I realized that I was wrong.
"Molly Momenta!" she yelled.
"Yeah, mom?" I said, obviously confused. She was supposed to say Meme, not Molly.
"You are going to do Meme's chores tomorrow, and on top of that, you are going to be grounded for the next 2 weeks. But right now, you have to do your chores correctly,"she answered, checking all the places I was supposed to do my chores.
"What? What do you mean?" I asked, getting up.
"All of your chores are done incorrectly. Don't pretend you don't know what I mean," answered Mom, annoyed.
"I didn't do my..." I started.
"What?" Mom glared at me.
I glanced outside through the window. In the backyard, all the weeds were scattered everywhere. I looked through the windows on the other outside of the room. Trash was everywhere on the floor in the front yard.
"I didn't do that! Meme did it," I blurted, pointing at Meme.
" Molly, please. Don't blame everything on your sister," mom said in a voice that said listen-to-me-or-else.
"Mom! It's true! She did it!" I said, thinking about how naughty little sisters can be.
"What do you mean, she did it? Those were your chores, correct?"
     "Well, yeah, but-"
"Don't lie. If you did something wrong, you should take the accountability for it. If you keep up complaining and not listening to me, you are grounded for another week."
I glanced at Meme, who was smiling, and then went outside to the front yard to start my chores. Never again, I thought to myself, would I be mean to that terrible but seriously brilliant, yet, still terrible, sister again.
