Chapter 3
"you're a tornado,
with pretty eyes
and a heartbeat."
The sounds of chattering and leaves rustling followed Callista Greengrass and James Potter through the Hogwarts Grounds as they made their way to a tree near the Black Lake.
The two smiled at a few people who greeted them as they passed. Callista knew how most people felt about her. It was in the way they smiled just a bit too much or rolled their eyes as she passed when they thought she was not looking. They thought they were being subtle, but even a mouse could read their faces.
She did not know if it was jealousy, or even house prejudice but she did not really care.
She also knew that there were people who did genuinely like her, whether it was because she spoke to them or because she always had a smile on her face, looking out of place next to her two best friends who always scowled in public. Some of the smiles she received were genuine, and those were the ones that made her day better.
Half the time she did not even feel like smiling, but that is who she was, kind Callista Greengrass, daughter of a well-known Ministry official and a fashion designer. At school, the perfect child who was kind to everyone; to the papers, a darling daughter; and to the prejudiced pure-bloods, a well-behaved daughter who is following in her parent's footsteps to be a prejudiced prick like them.
Most of the people who did like her were Hufflepuffs, or Ravenclaws of course. Some Slytherins, while civil with her, disagreed with her kindness to everyone, but in order to hide the fact that she did not agree with their prejudices, she simply told them it was some strategy to get people to like her. Many others believed that was the case too. They were the ones who thought she was fake or a pretender.
Callista sat down next to James and took out her homework for the week, she had an essay due Thursday and two essays for Friday. And that was for Potions. She stretched both arms and then dug through her bag for a quill.
James turned to her with a look of utter incredulity on his face. "Are you seriously going to do homework during our quality time?"
She gave him a look. "Yes."
"And here I thought we were friends."
She shook her head, unable to help the smile that came to her face. "Prick." She took her gaze off of her work and looked at him. "Can you check my Potions essay for me?"
"Sure." He nodded. Between the two of them, he was the better Potioneer. "But," he began again, "Then we get to do fun stuff and not this boring stuff you call homework."
She laughed, shoving her most of her stuff back into her bag. "Okay but if you miss Slughorn's deadline for the essay it's not my problem."
"It'll be done."
"Huh uh, sure."
"It will!"
Callista was showered with a tuft of grass. She gasped and grabbed some herself, chucking it at him. It landed in his hair.
James made a noise that did not sound human before he tackled her, pining her down and covering her hair in grass. This was how they always were, like siblings. It made her feel like she had an older brother instead of her being the oldest, but sometimes she was his older sister, keeping him out of trouble, though it would take a higher power to ever actually keep him out of trouble.
For a moment she was back in the field behind Potter Manor where her and James used to play for hours. She was 14 again and running through the field, trying to catch up to James, who was always just a bit faster than she was.
He tripped over a ditch and she tripped over him, landing in the tall grass. They had laughed until they wept, ignoring the grazes on their elbows and knees. They laid in the tall grass for hours, staring up the clouds, before James jumped up and yelled for her to catch him.
She loved the moments when none of it mattered. She did not have to have impeccable manners or watch her tongue. She could laugh and snort all she wanted or roll down hills with James and Sirius, Remus watching them with discontent when he visited Potter Manor.
When he finally released her, she sat up and spat out a piece of grass. "Disgusting," she muttered, sticking out her tongue and trying to pick the rest of the grass out of her mouth.
"You deserved it," James said poking her in the arm. He tilted his head slightly and tufts of grass fell but many continued to stay stuck in his thick hair.
"Whatever." she stood up, dusting herself off and gathered her things. "Your hair is probably messier than mine anyway."
James ruffled his hair and his hand came away covered in grass. He chuckled, "At least now you match your surname."
James grabbed his things and followed Callista as she made her way back into the castle. She combed through her hair with her fingers, picking out pieces of grass before they got inside.
"Maybe we should get you to match your surname." She glanced at James. "How do you feel about taking up pottery?"
"Hard pass," James said, crinkling his nose.
"Your loss," she said in a sing-song voice, laughing as they entered Hogwarts Castle.
