8: dolls
The next morning it was still early, the sun hadn't risen yet but Taehyung was already working. He had to restock some of his products to sell. Currently he was working on a new floral doll set adding the last details to them like a handmade flower crown and small gems decorating their small faces. He added the last piece and sighed, sitting back to look around him. His personal dolls on the shelf all stared into the blank space.
'the dolls are angry' Taehyung he remembered Jimin's words and chuckled.
"i know." he said and looked at the other doll. He sighed and pushed the finished dolls to the end of the table to work on the last of the head. He just needed a paint job and he was done. Taehyung knew very well the dolls were not peaceful around him, but he just never bothered to interact with them. but they seemed more angry ever since Jimin came here possessing a life size doll. The air in the house felt colder than usual even with all the fires burning and heating up the rooms.
*knock knock* two soft knocks echoed from the big hard wood of the doors which were the entrance and exit of the doll maker at his workplace.
"Come in," he said and removed the magnifying glass from his eyes. Taehyung looked up and saw Sunhee opened the door.
"You called?" she said looking at the headman of the mansion.
"Yes I did, can you check on jimin." Taehyung knew Jimin couldn't really sleep like humans do because he was just a ghost. but the boy did rest by retreating into his bedroom and sitting in the dark. He had requested Taehyung to remove the doll from his bedroom, which Taehyung wasn't fond of but he let the doll be removed by Sunhee and placed it in his own bedroom.
"I will"
"Then I think it's time for breakfast." Taehyung said and put back the magnifying glass, his hand taking a hold of the brush again.
"of course sir." Sunhee bowed slightly and left the room, closing the big doors behind her carefully to not make it echo too loudly through the whole mansion. Quickly she made her way up the stairs her own heels clacking on the stone stairs which did echo through the big halls. She had thought it was creepy at first, how silent the house was that you could hear your own footsteps and doors closing and opening. She and Taehyung had always been the only ones here since a while back. Now Jimin joined them she felt less alone. She hoped taehyung felt less alone too. The headman was a lonely man, but a cursed man too.
She neared Jimin's bedroom door and decided to knock first. she knocked twice, not too loud, not wanting to straddle the other. There was no reply. and supposing the boy didn't shower she opened the door peeking inside. the sun had started to rise giving the gold themed room a warm golden color. In the middle of the bed sat the doll cross legged staring at the wall.
"Excuse me for allowing myself inside, but I came to see how you were doing." Sunhee said politely and wlaked inside not too close in case she was requested to leave again.
"Oh, I'm sorry I didn't hear you......" Jimin said suddenly, having his attention back. "i was lost in thoughts"
"Oh that's okay, sir will be having his breakfast in a bit. Would you like to join him at the table?"
"I would like to, yes. And you?"
"oh?"
"will you eat too?"
"yes, i eat with him too. Shall i help you with your clothes?" Sunhee asked. Jimin slipped off the bed on his feet and stretched his porcelain limbs for a moment.
"I think I can do it myself, thank you anyway," Jimin said and smiled, well, smiling as far as his face allowed him to. Sunhee chuckled thinking it was cute and bowed before walking back to the door.
"Okay, I will prepare breakfast for him now. We will see you downstairs" sunhee then excused herself and left the room.
"I can't remember when I last ate something," Jimin said to himself as he stood in front of the mirror with the clothes he was going to wear. all handmade and detailed by the toymaker himself. Everything was a perfect fit for Jimin's body. even the gloves and accessories. It was all personalized for him and for him only.
"I wish to go back just for a bit" Jimin sighed. He will never be able to taste anything again or even feel something other than mental feelings like sadness which had taken over most of his spirit. but the light was growing in him now he got out of that hell hole in the basement. away from the voices shouting at him. He had some peace to his mind. well for the most past. he was still here with the dolls. the spirits were following him. which is why he asked the dolls in the bedroom to be removed. He didn't want a single dool watching or eavesdropping on him here. He wanted peace and a safe place for him to relax in silence.
"Pretty" Jimin said looking at himself. He didn't even remember how he looked before he died, so he took this as his new identity without any questioning glances or confusion about his appearance. He felt pretty as this doll. he was just perfect. no single flaw, no uneven edge. everything was beauty to be kept forever.
After he dressed himself all pretty he left the room, he did have to get used to the clackin of his heeled boots on the floor. He never wore them before but they did suit his new self a lot. While on the stairs he could already smell the scent of fresh food and walked faster. Sunhee suddenly passed by with a cart filled with food. She smiled seeing Jimin on the stairs and motioned for him to come down.
"It looks delicious," Jimin said and followed her to the dining room.
"Thank you, I prepared everything fresh," Sunhee said. She gathered food from their garden and bought the rest from farmers in the village or ordered things from the city further away. she never got the time to actually go to the city. She only visited there a few times to buy herself new dresses and get a haircut. but she was growing her hair long now to be able to put it into elegant buns and decorate it with pins and pearls.
They went inside the dining room and Taehyung was already sitting at the table which was always set. He looked at Jimin and gave him a smile pointing his hand to the chair on his right. The headman sat on the end of the table.
"Good Morning Jimin, how was your night?" Taehyung asked while Sunhee set the food on the table.
"Peaceful, thank you for the room." Jimin said, sitting down on the chair.
"No problem, it's big enough." the toymaker chuckled. "I have an order to be delivered to the post office in the village. would you mind taking it there Sunhee?"
"Can i come too?" Jimin asked, he was born in the village. He wont forget that. so going back was something he would want now. He wanted to see if it changed, was his home still there? Were his parents still alive?
Taehyung fell silent and stared at the doll. "hmm, if they allow you to leave I might consider letting you go for once": he said, his voice didn't sound so kind anymore, it sounded demanding. He didn't look very happy about Jimin wanting to leave the grounds and join Sunhee to the village.
"Thank you" Jimin said, even if taehyung wasn't so happy he still wanted to go. it's been ages since he left the grounds of Mr.Kim.
