The train ride
The train chugged to a stop. It was an old looking train. People got up and rushed into the train's open doors and Jonathan dragged Ben onto it. The platform filled with people and a speaker started announcing timetable. The train took off, increasing its speed as it went. Ben watched as the village got smaller and smaller until it disappeared into nothing. He watched the countryside fly past him and fell asleep next to Jonathan. Ben woke up, he looked around, people were reading newspapers, listening to music or just staring in front of them. He turned to Jonathan, he was fast asleep. Ben sighed and put his head down. This was his first time on a train. He didn't like the continuous chuffing of the train or the loud noise as another train pass by but he liked the speed they were going at. The compartment smelt of stale coffee and bread and the seats were a bit worn out and stained but more or less comfortable. Ben closed his eyes and let his dreams whisk him off to another world.
Ben awoke as the train rumbled to a stop. Jonathan shook him awake.
"We've stopped. I'm going to check the timetable, see if we have time to get off for a while and refresh ourselves. You stay here and keep our seats." Jonathan told him and walked off. Ben looked at the man sitting on the other side of the aisle. He was big and fat, he had a dirty dark grey beard and a friendly looking face. He smoked a pipe. Ben looked at it curiously, watching the smoke curl up in the air every time he blew into it. A tall skinny man came and sat down next to Ben.
"Oh sir?" Ben said shyly. The man looked down at Ben, his eyebrows raised.
"My er, my friend is sitting there." Ben said. The man shrugged.
"Too bad. My seat now. Get lost squirt." The man said gruffly. The pipe man looked at the skinny little man and grimaced. He got up and tapped the man on his shoulder.
"Don't touch me." growled the thin man.
"Oh no, you don't talk to my son like that." The big man bend down and put his face into the other man's.
"Wow wow there. Calm down, I'm only sitting here. Go away. I'm not doing anything." The skinny man protested.
"Oh yes you are. Now listen here you little man. You are going to get up from that seat, leave the child alone and get another seat!" snapped the big man. The skinny man got up and inched away.
"But there are no other seats." He said quietly.
"Too bad. Get lost. Er? NOW GO." shouted the man with the pipe. The skinny man glared at them and marched down the aisle.
"Eh, don't let anyone get to you kiddo." Pipe man said to Ben. Ben grinned.
"Ok, thank you Mr." he said gladly.
"Good to you young sir. My name is Fido by the way. Only Fido," The man said, "There look, your friend is coming back." Ben turned around and saw Jonathan push past a few teenagers to join him.
"Hey Ben. So we're going to leave soon but the next stop is in half an hour and we can get off there, get some fresh air and grab something to eat, then hop back on. They are going to stop for about an hour there so we'll have plenty of time." Jonathan said cheerily. The train started to move off and soon they were rushing past the countryside again.
The train had stopped. Jonathan wasn't there. Ben looked around and saw Fido on the next seat, reading a newspaper. Fido turned around and saw Ben staring at him.
"Your friend left to check the timetable." He told Ben.
"Ok thank you." ben yawned. Jonathan came down the aisle.
"Come on Ben. We have an hour break before we need to get back here. Don't lose your ticket. Why don't you give it to me? I'll keep it for you." Jonathan proposed. Ben handed him his ticket and they walked down the aisle and jumped off the stationary train. The train station they were at was much larger than the one in Alfriston. The sun shone brightly as they walked away from the train station. They walked through a friendly neighborhood where flowers bloomed in gardens and butterflies flew. A ice cream van was parked on the side of the road but Jonathan had no more money left. Ben stared longingly at the ice creams. People queued up in front of the van and some people stood around it, eating their icecreams. When no one was buying the ice creams, the man waved Ben and Jonathan over.
"Hey guys, would you like ice creams?" asked the man.
"We don't have money, sorry." Jonathan explained.
"It's ok, come to the side of the truck." the man beckoned them over to the side. The boys went to the side and the man opened the door. They saw the inside of the truck there was a small television, big fridges and some newspaper on the ground.
"If you want, you can have free ice creams." The man said.
"Really? Thanks." Jonathan grinned.
"Sure here you go." The man handed Jonathan and Ben an ice cream. The next thing Ben knew, the man was screaming and shouting.
"Hey you 2! You stole my ice cream! Thieves! They stole my ice creams." shouted the man, waving his hands, people rushed to the side of the van. Ben was about to protest but Jonathan dragged him off.
"Throw the ice cream Ben." Ordered Jonathan as they ran. Ben sighed and dropped it. Ben sprinted after Jonathan through the neighborhood. Soon, the shouts quieted and they walked.
"What happened? We didn't steal those ice cream. He gave them to use." Ben said.
"Yeah I know. But some people are like that. He pretended to give us those icecreams then he called for help, maybe hoping they would give him more money for losing his icecreams or something."
"Oh, that is weird. That is something the Kennedys would do." They both burst out laughing. Then Jonathan and Ben walked around the village. They passed beautiful and colourful shops and restaurant. They walked for a long time, trying to find the train station. Finally, Jonathan decided to ask someone. He tapped a man on the shoulder.
"Excuse me sir. Do you know where the train station is?" asked Jonathan.
"Yes, it's up this lane, turn left onto the road walk till you see Burger King and it'll be on your right." The man replied.
"Thank you sir." thanked Jonathan. They walked up the lane and turned left into the road. They followed the road for what seemed like forever until they spotted Burger King, and right opposite it, the train station. As the ran to their stop, they heard the unmistakable sound of a train moving. They sprinted to their platform to see the train disappearing from view. Jonathan groaned. Ben ran after the train but stopped when Jonathan told him it was no use. They went over to a board and checked when the next train would come, in 4 hours.
"Oh well, I guess this time we should stay here." decided Jonathan. They settled down on a bench facing their platform and Ben curled up into a bay and slept. A police approached them after a while.
"Good evening young man. Are you and your little friend there alright? You shouldn't be alone here. I might need to call police." The policeman said. Jonathan raised his eyebrows, the man was a police.
"I'm good sir. Me and my little brother, Ben. We are waiting for a train, we missed the other see? We are going back to our parents in London city." Jonathan lied.
"Ah ok, well it's very brave of you to go on a train alone, with your little brother. Do you have money, or something to eat?" asked the policeman. Jonathan shook his head.
"No sir. We used it all to buy the train tickets." confessed Jonathan. The policeman raised his eyebrows.
"Well your parents didn't give you much money. You know, from here to the city, it's about half a day. You'll be very hungry."
"Well yes, but we've got nothing so there really isn't much we can do."
"I shouldn't be giving money to parentless kids but here. 20 bucks so you can get yourself and your brother some food." The policeman left to talk to some teenagers shouting. Jonathan smiled.
"Ben, Ben Ben Ben. Ben!" Jonathan urged. Ben opened his eyes groggily. Jonathan waved the money in his face.
"I'm going to get us something to eat. I'll be back, be good." Jonathan informed Ben before prancing off. Ben waited patiently for Jonathan, watching some teenagers shout and run around. One of the teenager ran at a wall and flipped of it. Ben was in awe. A scary looking policeman yelled at them to be respectful. Ben yawned: Jonathan came back a few minutes later with a bottle of water and 2 hot dogs.
"Got us some hotdogs and water, it was only 8 together, so we still got 12 bucks." Jonathan reported. Ben ate his food heartily then gulped down some water. They waited in silence for the train. An hour later, the train chuffed into view, wheels squealing. Ben got up excitedly and they entered the train. They found a nice spot in the back of the train and Ben settled in for a long rest. Jonathan sat on the outer chair, letting Ben peer out of the window eagerly. The journey was long and tedious, Ben often had a headache but he pushed it away by sleeping. Every Time Jonathan was asleep and Ben awake, he would get so bored, he sometimes would walk around the train till he was tired. After half a day, the city came into view. Ben watched the crowds of people walking around. Jonathan marveled at the sight.
"You live here?" he asked in amazement.
"Not really. I mean I live in this city, but not in the cool busy part, the more poor ugly, lonely part." Ben answered. Jonathan kept his eyes on every sight. Soon, they arrived at a lonely train station and they got off.
"I remember this place." Ben reported. This was the train station near his house. It was late morning as they walked away from the train station.
"Over there! Look! The park! My park!" cried Ben. they had reached the park and the school gates. The place was deserted besides a few kids playing with a ball on the grass. Some cars rumbled past and it rained slightly.
"So what do you want to do here? Are you going back to your family?" questioned Jonathan. Ben shook his head.
"No! They're mean. I want to fine teddy first. He's my dog." Ben decided. "Ok, I'll follow you." Jonathan offered. "It's very dangerous. The people don't like me, they could get us killed." whispered Ben as they walked past sad looking houses. "It doesn't matter. I like adventure." Jonathan urged. "Ok thank you Jonathan. You are nice." Ben sighed happily.
