Reunited
They turned into a small dirt lane and soon, the big grey building of the pound was in view. They crept to the door and Ben tried to open it. It was locked. The suddenly heard a car engine roaring. It came from the side of the building. They crept to the other side and peered behind the wall. There was a red car with the boot open, a man wearing expensive clothing was talking to the man with a white apron and Jeremy was by his side. The man with the apron counted some bills, the well dressed man had handed him and nodded in approval. He gestured for Jeremy to go inside. Jeremy disappeared into a the building and then emerged with none other than Teddy in a small cage. Ben gasped and Jonathan quickly pulled him behind the wall and covered his mouth.
"That's Teddy! They took my Teddy." protested Ben squealing in Jonathan's arms.
"Ben! Shut up! Do you want to get us killed!?" hissed Jonathan. Ben stopped moving and took deep breaths.
"Now listen, they are obviously selling Teddy now and you won't have another chance to get to him. I have a feeling the man will put Teddy down somewhere, maybe in the car, or boot or on the ground, I don't know. When he does, I will create a distraction which will allow you to take Teddy. Understood?" Jonathan questioned. Ben nodded and then turned to get a better look at the people. They watched as they placed Teddy in the boot then the trio turned back around and started talking.
"Ok, now." Jonathan ran out from the wall and darted into the open doorway. Jeremy yelled and the apron man ran after him. The well dressed man shrugged and watched them disappear into the building, he then advanced at the door and waited for the men to come back. As he leaned against the door, Ben ran to the car. He smiled as Teddy whimpered happily and wagged his tail. Ben opened the cage and hugged Teddy, then he ran to the back of the building and Teddy followed him. He heard the well dressed man yelling and following him. He sprinted followed by Teddy to the dirt lane and emerged into the main road. He ran and his in one of the alleys with Teddy. He heard the man curse loudly and return to the pound, swearing under his breath. Ben waited silently. He approached the dirt lane and waited for Jonathan. Soon, Ben slumped against the wall and cuddled with Teddy. A light rain started drenching them little by little. Ben started to shiver and go numb in the frosty air. Cars would whizz past, not paying attention to him. Sometimes, people would walk by and upon seeing Ben, would hurry off, desperate not to be the one to help. They waited through the night, pressed together. At sunrise, Ben slowly got up, his body aching, his breath condensed in front of him. The streets were silent, no cars, no people. Ben looked around at the dirt lane, hoping to see Jonathan running to them. Ben suddenly felt scared, scared for Jonathan and scared about what was going to happen. They waited, rather impatiently now. More and more people started coming out and cars starting driving past them. As time passed, Ben got worried, more and more worried. They waited and waited and waited. Jonathan never returned.
