Alone
By night, Ben had given up hope. He trailed off to the park, head down with Teddy following him solemnly. Ben sat on a bench, staring out into space. A tear rolled down his cheek. Ben felt alone. He had never felt anything like it. It felt like someone had stabbed him. He cried the whole night, making Teddy whine. When no more tears were left he mentally cried. His heart was aching, he didn't even pay attention to Teddy when he whined and pawed at him. A few hours into the morning, Ben finally closed his eyes and fell into a deep slumber. Teddy watched him, guarding his beloved friend and master. When Ben woke up an hour later, Teddy nagged at him for food. Ben pushed the dog away and trudged through the park and past houses. His brain was numb, he didn't think. He kept walking, on and on and on. Teddy followed loyally, never losing step. After two hours of pointless wandering, Ben stopped and lay sprawled on the street near some big bins. Teddy was worried but the smell of food beckoned him. He sniffed his nose. Teddy tried to stay by Ben's side, he clawed at Ben's thin shirt and bit him gently on the hand. Ben lay motionless. After a while, Teddy's nose twitched and a sweet smell wafted from the bins. Teddy approached them cautiously, his tail in his legs. Once near, he dove into a bin and found a rotting pizza. The smell overcame him, hunger took the better of him and he gobbled it down greedily. Teddy didn't notice anything. He was too focused on the food before him, of his grumbling tummy. He didn't notice the truck.
Mist crawled around the streets of London. Silence pierced the air. Ben didn't dare move and disturb the silence. He lay on the cold hard street floor, staring up at the sky. A lone streetlight lit the street dimly making the atmosphere sad and lifeless. Ben got up, he looked around, he knew he had forgotten something. Teddy. He looked around. Teddy was no where in view. Ben ached to call out but didn't have the guts to pierce the silence. He looked around desperately. He suddenly felt so scared he froze. His mind was cold and didn't work, fear overtook him. He had never felt anything like it. He was alone now, Teddy had left him, the truth struck him hard. No tears came. Ben slowly took deep breaths and started to walk aguishly down the street. He didn't turn when he thought he saw shadows flickering in the corners, it took all his strength not to turn back or run. He occasionally heard noises which gave him goosebumps and freeze with fear but he would then continue. His thoughts were preoccupied with fear, loneliness and sadness. He had never felt like this before. He shivered in the frosty air, the mist twirling around him. Ben had finally stopped walking when he had found a subway station. He crouched near a bench and fell into a troubled sleep through the day.
Meanwhile, Teddy's mind was overwhelmed. He was so please and so happy but still worried and a bit scared. He didn't know why. He was in a truck full of all sorts of foods and toys. He could feast on it all for years but he was alone, no Ben. He decided Ben would be alright and all the more pleased that Teddy had found food. Teddy climbed around the piles of food, digging and eating, chewing and scratching at all sorts of things. From time to time, he would feel everything move from side to side or hear a distant rumbling but he never paid any attention to it. When his belly was full and he was contented he searched for en exit. He found none. He suddenly realised he was in an enclosed space. Listening carefully he could hear the roar of an engine, which seemed to be coming from under him and the sound of tires. He could hear people yelling faintly, somewhere outside this big box of food and toys. Teddy sat down, puzzled. He knew he had to find Ben but he didn't know how. He curled up into a ball and fell into a confused but contented sleep.
Teddy woke up to the sound of pounding footsteps. He sprang up and jumped behind a big pile of rubbish. Suddenly, a loud noise erupted and on the other side of the compartment, the wall lowered. Sunlight rushed through into the compartment and Teddy wagged his tail. He heard the cries of humans and felt their footsteps as they hit the road. He smelt them and the horrible gas smell he always smelt on cars. He wrinkled his small nose. Creeping up, he tried to go for the opening. Suddenly, a human emerged and looked directly at him. The human shouted something and Teddy darted past him, jumping down onto the uneven hard concrete floor. He ran past houses and pelted through neighborhoods. None seemed to have followed him. When he reached a fountain, he stopped, panting for breath. His tongue lolling out of his mouth his ears twitched, listening for any sounds. All he heard was birds singing and the faint sound of kids yelling. The houses around him were colourful and flowers grew all over, warming Teddy's heart. He sprang onto the ledge of the fountain and drank thankfully. He wandered around the neighborhood, searching for signs of Ben. He found none. By night he had lost hope. He curled up into a ball, scared and alone, wishing he had never left Ben's side. He had nowhere to sleep or go, homeless. Alone.
Ben wandered around, watching the sky grow darker by the minute. He was soon alone, on the street, he wished Teddy had never left him. He wished he had stayed in the subway station. He wished Jonathan was there. He slumped down and closed his tired eyes. He didn't know where to go, he was tired, lonely and depressed. He was homeless and companionless. Alone.
