The Fake Change
The tension between Sharon, Sid, and Suhana reached a breaking point one fateful afternoon during a college swimming competition. Sharon, sensing the growing distance between Sid and Suhana, decided to confront Suhana directly, hoping to shift the dynamics in her favor.
As the swimmers prepared for their respective heats, Sharon approached Suhana with a forced smile. "Suhana, can we talk for a moment?" she asked sweetly, her voice tinged with an underlying tension.
Suhana, caught off guard by Sharon's sudden approach, nodded hesitantly. They moved to a quieter corner of the pool area, away from the bustling crowd.
"What's on your mind, Sharon?" Suhana inquired, trying to keep her tone neutral.
Sharon took a deep breath, her eyes welling up with tears. "I... I don't know how to say this, but I feel like you've been trying to come between Sid and me. He's always with you, always talking about you."
Suhana frowned, her brows knitting together in confusion. "Sharon, Sid bhai and I are siblings. We've always been close. I would never try to come between you two."
Sharon wiped away a tear that trickled down her cheek, her voice quavering. "But... but I overheard you talking to Veer about me. You said I was too clingy, that I was getting between you and Sid."
Suhana's eyes widened in disbelief. "Sharon, that's not what I meant at all. I was just worried about Sid Bhai. He's my brother, and I care about him deeply."
Sharon shook her head adamantly, her expression hardening. "No, Suhana. You want to see me fail. You even said once that you wished I would just disappear!"
Suhana recoiled, stunned by Sharon's accusation. "Sharon, I never said that! You're twisting my words."
Their argument escalated, voices rising as emotions ran high. Unbeknownst to them, the pool area had emptied out, leaving them alone in their heated exchange. In the midst of their confrontation, Sharon's emotions reached a breaking point. She turned away abruptly, pretending to wipe tears from her eyes.
"Suhana," Sharon choked out, her voice trembling with faux vulnerability, "you're so mean to me. You even once said... you wished I would drown in this pool!"
Suhana gasped in horror, realizing the gravity of the situation. "Sharon, I never said that! You're making things up."
But Sharon, consumed by her own insecurities and desire to win Sid's undivided attention, was beyond reason. In a moment of reckless desperation, she shoved Suhana with unexpected force, catching her off guard. Suhana stumbled backwards, losing her balance on the edge of the pool.
"Suhana, watch out!" Sid's voice rang out, but it was too late. Suhana's foot slipped on the wet tiles, and she plunged into the deep end of the pool with a splash.
Time seemed to slow down as Suhana struggled underwater, her limbs flailing in panic. The world around her dissolved into a blur of bubbles and refracted sunlight. She fought against the pressure building in her chest, the need for air burning in her lungs.
Suddenly, strong arms wrapped around her, pulling her towards the surface. It was Sid, his expression a mix of fear and relief as he hoisted Suhana out of the water. She coughed and gasped for air, clinging to him as he helped her to the edge of the pool.
"Suhana, are you okay?" Sid asked urgently, his hands trembling as he checked her for any signs of injury.
Suhana nodded weakly, still in shock from the sudden turn of events. "I... I'm okay. Thank you, Bhai."
As Sid comforted Suhana, Sharon stood by the poolside, her facade crumbling as guilt and remorse washed over her. The gravity of what she had done sank in, and she realized the depths to which her jealousy and manipulation had led.
"I'm so sorry, Suhana," Sharon whispered, tears streaming down her face for real this time. "I didn't mean for any of this to happen."
Suhana lay on the poolside, her chest heaving as she struggled to catch her breath. The waterlogged coughs wracked her body, her lungs burning from the lack of air. Sid knelt beside her, panic etched on his face as he tried to comfort her.
"Suhana, just breathe," Sid urged, his voice trembling with worry. He gently rubbed her back, trying to soothe her as he glanced around desperately for help.
Sharon stood a few feet away, tears streaming down her face, realizing the severity of her actions. "I didn't mean... I didn't mean for this to happen," she whispered hoarsely, her hands trembling with shock and guilt.
Veer, who had rushed over upon hearing the commotion, knelt down on Suhana's other side, his expression grave. "Sid, we need to get her to the infirmary. She's having difficulty breathing."
With great effort, Sid and Veer carefully lifted Suhana, supporting her as they hurried towards the college infirmary. The campus nurse, alerted by the urgency in their voices, met them at the door.
"What happened?" the nurse asked, her voice tinged with concern as she quickly led them to a nearby examination room.
Sid explained hurriedly, his voice cracking with emotion. "Sharon... she pushed Suhana into the pool during an argument. Suhana couldn't breathe properly afterward."
The nurse nodded, her professional demeanor taking over as she assessed Suhana's condition. She checked her oxygen levels and listened to her lungs, all the while comforting Suhana with gentle reassurances.
"Suhana, can you hear me?" the nurse asked softly, adjusting the oxygen mask over Suhana's face to help her breathe more easily.
Suhana nodded weakly, her eyes fluttering open as she struggled to speak. "I... I'm sorry, Sid. I should have..."
Sid cut her off gently, his eyes brimming with tears of relief. "Shh, don't talk right now, Suhana. Just focus on breathing."
Veer stood nearby, his fists clenched in anger and worry. "Sharon, how could you do something like that? You could have seriously hurt her!"
Sharon sank to the floor, overwhelmed with guilt and shame. "I didn't mean to... I was just so angry and... I didn't think..."
The nurse intervened, her voice firm yet compassionate. "Right now, Suhana needs rest and observation. We'll talk about this later."
As the nurse continued to tend to Suhana, Sid paced anxiously outside the examination room, his mind racing with a mix of emotions. Veer hovered nearby, equally distraught by the turn of events.
After what felt like an eternity, the nurse emerged from the room, her expression solemn. "Suhana's stable now, but she needs to rest. I've given her medication to ease her breathing. She should be okay, but we'll keep her here for observation."
Sid nodded gratefully, his shoulders sagging with relief. "Thank you, nurse. Can we see her?"
The nurse nodded, stepping aside to let Sid and Veer into the room. Suhana lay on the bed, her breathing shallow but steady. She looked pale and exhausted, but the tension in her face had eased slightly.
Sid approached her bedside, his heart heavy with guilt and worry. "Suhana, I'm so sorry. I should have..."
Suhana managed a weak smile, reaching out to squeeze his hand. "It's not your fault, bhai. I'm okay now."
Veer stood at the foot of the bed, his eyes red-rimmed with unshed tears. "We were so scared, Suhana. Sharon's actions were..."
Suhana interrupted softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's okay, Veer. I just... need some time."
Outside the infirmary, Sharon sat alone on a bench, her head in her hands. She couldn't believe what had happened, the consequences of her jealousy and insecurity staring her in the face. She knew she had to make things right, somehow.
Later that evening, Sharon approached Sid and Veer in the college courtyard, her expression contrite. "I need to talk to you both."
Sid looked at her warily, still reeling from the events of the day. "What is it, Sharon?"
Sharon took a deep breath, steeling herself to face the repercussions of her actions. "I'm sorry, Sid, Suhana. I never meant for any of this to happen. I was... I was jealous, and I let my emotions get the best of me."
Veer folded his arms across his chest, his voice filled with frustration. "Sharon, you could have seriously hurt Suhana. What were you thinking?"
Tears welled up in Sharon's eyes again as she struggled to find the right words. "I wasn't thinking. I was... I was scared of losing Sid's friendship, of losing everything I've found here."
Sid sighed heavily, his gaze softening slightly. "Sharon, what you did was wrong. But we're all going to work through this together, okay?"
Sharon nodded, her shoulders slumping with relief. "I'll do whatever it takes to make things right, Sid. I promise."
As they stood in the courtyard, shadows lengthening with the setting sun, they knew that healing would take time. The bond of friendship and family had been tested, but amidst the turmoil, there was hope for reconciliation and forgiveness.
But Suhana remained silent, her gaze fixed on Sid as he continued to reassure her. The bond between siblings had been tested that day, but through adversity, their understanding and love for each other only grew stronger.
