Lucifer (Part Six)
After the portal opened, it quickly became clear it wasn't Kami but Tiriara who was coming to see him. He also didn't expect her to attempt stopping him by activating the angelic core within his body. It didn't go as planned, the demons hiding away again as soon as Lucifer was seemingly dying. However, he managed to survive by tearing the core from his body. Even though his soul split at that moment and he lost part of his strength, he didn't intend to stop fighting. However, he received an unexpected companion. A demon that was resurrected from a human body by Lucifer's torn soul. He took the name onto himself that was given to Lucifer, which was Satan. But surely, Lucifer's action did not remain unanswered. Maeril attacked them some time later, intending to bring Lucifer to come see Kami and face punishment. Lucifer and Satan fought her off until she threw a light ball into Lucifer's face, that stole his eye sight. Right when Maeril was about to kill him off, Satan threw himself in front of Lucifer to protect him and take the hit instead. Lucifer managed to chase Maeril away, but Satan passed out due to his severe injuries.
When Satan woke up, the first thing he noticed was that his wound no longer hurt. Confused, he slowly sat up and looked down on himself. The blood on his jacket had dried up and a fresh scar was visible on his chest. "No way it could have healed that quickly..." Just as he had expressed the thought, he turned his head to the side. Lucifer sat with him and his eyes were covered with bandages. "Did you...?",
"Mm." He nodded. "I used my Temporal Magic to help your wound heal faster after I managed to stop the bleeding. I'm afraid there's nothing I can do about the scar, though. The injury was too deep to heal perfectly.",
"Never mind. I'll just take it as a trophy." Satan smiled in a carefree way, but Lucifer wasn't able to see it at all. When he realized that, his smile faded as quickly as it had come. "Since you're wearing the bandages, I assume you still can't see?"
Lucifer nodded without a word.
"Can't you... like... use your time magic to heal your eyes? Like you healed me?",
"Healing is the wrong word", Lucifer said. "And no, I can't. Since the incident with the misused spell I am still a little weakened. I can help you, but not myself. For now. They'll have to heal in a natural way. If they'll ever heal, that is. Are you in pain?", he added a question.
"No. " Satan shook his head. "Nothing hurts.",
"Good." Lucifer stood up. "Rest. You still lost a lot of blood, rash movements might cause you to faint. Let me know if you need anything." He turned around, but Satan held him back. "Why did you heal me?" he wanted to know. Lucifer paused briefly before answering: "For the same reason you threw yourself before me.",
"Are you worried about me?" No answer followed. Lucifer walked away in silence and left the room. Satan smiled to himself. "I nailed it, huh..."
As Lucifer was walking his way, he heard a voice. "What happened to your eyes?"
He stopped in his tracks. "Nothing important.",
"It doesn't look like that."
Lucifer suppressed a sigh and turned to the voice that definitely belonged to Azra. "You remember the angel who was hunting you before I. . . intervened, do you not?",
"Yes. I won't forget her face for a long while. Why?",
"She attacked us. She was there on Kami's behalf. Tried to get me to her. She hurt my eyes in the fight. Kami is up to something, whatever it is. I won't play into her cards. Probably, she wants to finally finish what she failed to do. Get rid of me for good. Not that it matters..." He shook his head. "My life and death are meaningless, anyway.",
"Why are you saying such things?",
"Because it's the undeniable truth. No one needs me. The one who calls herself the goddess created me by her blood and raised me to become a savior one day. And yet, it was so easy for her to abandon me for no reason. I'm just some failure to be thrown away. That's it. I know I can't exactly control how people think about me, but considering the fact that nobody gave a damn that I was accused of betrayal yet I didn't even hurt Maeril back then, it becomes pretty clear to me that I've been living a lie. People pretend they need you, but when time comes, they'll eventually let you down. That's the entire moral for the story. Rotten people are everywhere to be found in the world, and some of them wear a halo.",
"We need you. There is perhaps no more painful thought in the world than that of 'nobody likes me' or 'nobody needs me'. It's an easy feeling to indulge and dwell on, a terrible go-to self-attack in low moments when we feel isolated, betrayed, anxious or insecure. This feeling has almost no bearing in reality and no purpose other than to deeply wound us and turn us against ourselves and whatever our goals may be. This "critical inner voice" exists in all of us, reminding us constantly that we aren't good enough and don't deserve what we want. The critical inner voice tends to be louder and meaner in some of us than others, and it tends to pick on us more or less at different points in our lives. Yet, one thing is for sure. As long as we are listening to this dangerous critic that twists our reality, we cannot really trust our own perceptions of what others think of us. Now ask yourself... is there really no one that cares about you?",
"Even the people closest to you can turn against you in mere moments, just like THEY did. Maeril hated me because I was favorized by Kami instead of her. She was envious of me getting all the flowers. She was a venomous and terribly corrupt person. She twisted the story of what really happened so far it suited her extremely biased worldview and watched in satisfaction as everyone bought her word and turned their backs on me without even trying to hear me out. I never had a choice in life to begin with, because when I made my own choices, I was tossed aside like a rotten apple. I don't trust anyone unless they prove me wrong. Don't take that personal.",
"Are you scared of caring about somebody again?" Azra asked. "Are you afraid to be disappointed again? Is that why you won't let anyone in on you?"
Lucifer said nothing for a moment, before he turned his back towards the other demon. "Yes. Because when you keep everyone away, there's no one that can hurt you. Even though... You don't really need to know a person for that long to start caring about them. The only person that deserves a special place in my life is someone that will never make me feel like I'm just an option in theirs.",
"I am pretty much sure that Satan thinks about you that way.",
"...",
"You do care about him, do you not?",
"I said too much, didn't I... He threw himself in front of me to protect me. However, I am unaware of how I am supposed to feel about him. He shares my memories. He knows what happened and he is the only one who understands me, while I've been misunderstood by everyone else... He knows what I did and still didn't leave me. If he knew all the details, I am sure he'd leave.",
"What details do you mean?",
"... that I was the one who murdered him in his previous life.",
"Do you know who he is?" Azra asked. Lucifer shook his head. "I don't. I'm afraid, Azra... that I'll end up all alone again. Just like the time when I was caged here... I was dying inside.",
"I do understand that. And I'm positive that you will find a reason to trust someone again. I don't know you for that long, but what I do know is that I can see what kind of person you are. A part of you has been hurt and you try to hide it and wear a mask, but I think I can see through that mask." He put a hand on the blind demon's shoulder. "Worry no more."
