Plot
The Doctor and his friends are sent back in time by the Time Lords in order to prevent the creation of the Daleks on Skaro; it is here that the Doctor first encounters Davros, the Daleks' creator

Trivia and Behind the Scenes Facts
This story introduced Davros, the creator of the Daleks; the actor playing the mad scientist, Micheal Wisher wore knee pads and a kilt while in costume in order to help him steer Davros' base

According to producer Barry Letts; he had asked Terry Nation to write a new Dalek story, but the two drafts that Nation wrote and submitted were too similar to the previously aired stories "Planet of the Daleks" and "Death to the Daleks". After these two scripts were rejected, Letts suggested to Nation that he could explore the "Genesis of the Daleks"; which gave Terry Nation the idea for this story

This is the last time that the Kaleds were seen in the classic series of Doctor Who, although they would return in spin off media

The concept behind the Daleks being created by a scientist comes from a TV 21 comic written by David Whitaker but credited to Terry Nation; in that comic, the Daleks are created by a scientist called Yarvelling

Another origin for the Daleks came from a story published in a 1973 issue of Radio Times and written by Terry Nation where the Daleks were created from future humans

The Daleks in this story are coloured sliver and grey, with a single Dalek being black and grey; which came from a previous Dalek story

Events in this story come first in the Dalek timeline; although it is occurs much later in the Doctor's timeline since he is in his fourth incarnation
