Chapter 8: Dreamwalking
The trio walk along the sidewalk and come up to lights, which was green. Stephen started to walk out but America grabs him and pulls him back just as a car wheezes by. "They go on red?" Stephen asked America as he noticed nobody going on green. "Rule number one of Multiversal travel? You don't know anything." America said. "Right." Stephen said and the trio wait until the light turns red.
"It's red." he said and they started to walk across the street. "So, what's rule number two?" Stephen asked and both he and Vincent turn to see America not behind them. "America?" Stephen said. "America?" Vincent said, panicked, then he felt a tap on his shoulder.
He turns and sees her and he goes and taps Stephen's shoulder. "Rule number two? Find food. Preferrably, pizza. Pizza balls." America said as she holds up a bowl with some pizza balls. "Oh good. I'm starting." Vincent said as he takes a pizza ball. Then he and America tap the food together, as one would clink their glasses together, and begin to eat them.
"How'd you pay for that?" Stephen asked her as they start to walk. "It was free. Food's free in most universes, actually. It's weird you guys have to pay for it." she said as they walk by a food stand and an older man turns and sees the teens eating the pizza balls.
"Hey. You didn't pay for that." he yells and Stephen and the teens turn to him. "Crap. Maybe it's not free here." America said. "Pizza Poppa always gets paid." Pizza Poppa said, annoyed and angry, as he walks up to them. "Alright, Pizza Poppa. Relax, they’re just kids..." Stephen said.
"Relax yourself there, Doctor Strange. Where did you get this cape from anyway?" Pizza Poppa asked as he grabs the cloak and runs his fingers over it. "Oh, that feels authentic." He said. "It's not a cape, it's a cloak. And I suggest you let go." Stephen threatens. "You took this whole suit from the Strange Museum, didn't ya?" Pizza Poppa asked, accusatory.
"Strange Museum?" Stephen asked, confused. "You're a taker. Why don't you take some mustard, huh?!" Pizza Poppa said as he holds up a mustard bottle and aims it at Stephen. But before he could do anything, Stephen raises a hand then does some gestures and made Pizza Poppa aim the bottle at himself and shoot mustard at himself.
Then Stephen made the man start punching himself. "Come on. It's not permanent." Stephen tells the kids as they watch Pizza Poppa beat himself up. "Is it gonna stop in a few minutes?" Vincent asked him. "About three weeks." Stephen replied and they walk on.
"Those universes we went through, were we paint in one of them?" Vincent asked America and she chuckles a bit. "Yeah. You don't wanna get stuck in there. It's really hard to eat." America said and Vincent laughs while Stephen chuckles.
"How many universes have you been through?" Stephen asked her. "Seventy-two? Seventy-three, counting this one." she replied after thinking. "That's...That's a lot." Stephen said as he steps on a platform that lights up. "Memory Lane. Replay your significant memories, now in a discounted price. We remember, so you don't forget." an automated voice said as the platform scans Stephen.
He stops and stares ahead as the window of this business turns into a large screen. Projected on the screen was Stephen and (y/n) sitting at a table to a nice restaurant and Stephen's mouth drops, slightly. This was a memory....a memory of their actual first date.
"You really didn't have to do this, Stephen." (Y/n) said, but the smile on her face couldn't be contained. "Hey, we saved the world, we earned it." Stephen said, a bit in a joking manner, and she giggles. "Besides, I wanted to take you out on an actual date. Since I'm guessing you've never been on one." Stephen said. "Nope and, honestly, I never thought I would go on a date." (Y/n) said.
“You haven’t?” he asked her and she shakes her head. “Nope. Like I told you before, I’ve been studying and training a lot since I was a kid. Didn’t really have time to experience things in the world outside the temple.” She explained and Stephen gives her a sympathetic look. "Well, let's start changing that, shall we?" Stephen said and (y/n) giggles.
"How about we start a bucket list for you?" He said and she furrows her brow. "Bucket list?" She asked. "Yeah, it's just a list of things you wanna do before you die. Like a challenge." He explained. “I’m up for the challenge.” (Y/n) says and takes a sip of her drink. “We can do a list starting tomorrow. Whatever you want to do, wherever you want. You up for it?” Stephen said. “Sounds perfect, thank you. I would be cooped up in the temple for the rest of my life if wasn’t for you.” She replied, with sarcasm, and they both chuckled.
“To life changing goals.” Stephen raises his glass up. "To life changing goals." (Y/n) repeated as she raises her glass up and they clink the glasses together. "Bring it on world!" (Y/n) exclaimed, excitedly, and Stephen chuckles as he stares at her, love shining in his eyes.
As the memory played out, Stephen watched this then gulped. This memory was when Stephen realized he wanted to marry (y/n). He watches this for a moment then turns away. "We don't have time for this." he said as he steps off of the memory then Vincent looks at the platform and goes to step on it.
"Memory Lane. Replay your significant memories, now in a discounted price. We remember, so you don't forget." The voice said and it scans Vincent then it projects his memory. It was him as a young boy, probably about five or six years old, with (y/n) playing with him.
"Is this...?" Stephen asked Vincent and he nods.
At that moment, Vincent's dad walks in and (y/n) smiles. "Look who's here, Vincent!" (Y/n) said to him and Vincent smiles. "Daddy!" Vincent exclaims and Stephen kneels down to his son and embraces the young boy.
Suddenly, there was loud crashing noise and the two adults look over to where they heard the noise. "Put Vincent somewhere safe!" Stephen said as he hands the boy back to (y/n) and runs off.
The memory shifts to (y/n) placing Vincent in his room. The young boy was visibly upset. "Momma!" He said and she gives him a reassuring smile. "Don't worry, honey. I'll be right back. I love you." She said and she kisses the top of his head then shuts the door behind her.
Vincent takes some deep breathes and started to look frightened as they hear the sounds of a huge fight going on, including some screams. Then it goes silent.
Vincent stands in his room as the silence continues. Then he heard the sound of someone sobbing. Vincent walks up to the door and opens it then walks through. He could hear the sobbing getting louder the closer he got until he finally makes it to the main area of the Sanctum, they were staying in.
In the middle of the room was a dead carcass of the creature Stephen and (y/n) were fighting but in the middle of the room and in front of the creature is what caught Vincent's eyes. Stephen was kneeled over, crying, as he cradled the body of his dead wife.
Vincent steps off of the platform, quickly, and takes a few steps away from it. Stephen gives him a sympathetic look and goes to stand next to him. "Hey, kid. It wasn't your fault..." Stephen said as Vincent bites back the tears. "I'm sure your parents did their best." Stephen said and Vincent looks down at the ground then Stephen places a hand on his shoulder.
Vincent looks up at him but before he could say anything the automated voice spoke again, saying the same thing it said to Stephen and Vincent. They turn and see that America had stepped in the platform.
Screen projects a place that looked like fields and a little girl was picking flowers.
"Where's this?" Stephen asked her. "Home." she replied then two women walk up to her, bot wearing similar attire of ling dresses. "My moms." America said, smiling, as it shows the kid version of her hand one of her mom's a flower.
The first mom accepts it then go to put it over her partner's ear and they smile. America smiles then she frowns when she sees her picking up another flower, but there was a large bee on it. The kid version of her screams and her eyes light up in a blue-white color and a star shaped portal appears behind her mothers.
The women try to hang on and reach out for America but then they were sucked into the portal, which then disappears. "Yeah, you're right. This is just a waste of time." America said, quickly and upset, as she steps off of the platform and walks off. Vincent and Stephen share a look before they go after her.
"Hey, kid. That was the first time that you opened a portal, right?" Stephen asked America as he and Vincent catch up with her. "It doesn't matter." she said. "It does matter. You lost your parents." said Stephen. "I didn't lose them. I killed them." America grumbles then Vincent goes up to her, stands in front of her which made her stop, and places his hands on her shoulder.
"No. No, you did not. Don't even think that." He said, firmly. "Okay, I opened a portal with the powers I can't control, and sent them to a random, probably deadly universe with no way to escape." America said, annoyed, and Stephen walks up to her. "Listen, if your moms are anything like their daughter...They survived. I'm sure you'll meet them again someday." he said and she stares at him for a moment then smiles.
"Not bad." she said. "Thanks." Stephen said and America and Vincent smile and the three of them continue on.
They make it to the Sanctum and notice a large statue in front of the building. As they get up to the statue, they realize that it was a large statue of Stephen Strange. They stop and look it over then Vincent looks down and sees a plaque. "Gave his life defeating Thanos?" Vincent said, confused, while America stares at the plaque. "Yeah, see? We're not all bad." Stephen said, patting Vincent's shoulder.
"If other you's dead...Who's master of the Sanctum?" America asked Stephen and they walk around the statue and see that there was a person standing at the doorway of the Sanctum.
"Oh, shit." Stephen mutters once he sees who it was. "You know him?" America asked as her and Vincent sees who it was. "Crap." Vincent mutters as he recognizes the man. "Yeah. Mordo. Him and (y/n) were the first people who let me into Kamar-Taj." Stephen said. "Oh, great." America said, optimistic.
"And then he snapped and dedicated his life trying to kill me." Stephen said. "Oh...Great." America said, sadly, and Vincent sighs. "Yeah, in my universe, Mordo always accused Dad for taking Mom away from him." Vincent said and Stephen looks over at him, disbelieving, and Vincent turns to him. "Dad didn't by the way. Mordo was just crazy." Vincent explained when this universe's Mordo, who had long dreadlocks and wearing green tunic.
"I always suspected this day would come." Mordo said as he walks up to Stephen. "You did?" Stephen asked, cautiously. "Yes. Because you always suspected this day would come." Mordo said then he places his hands on Stephen's shoulders and smiles.
"My brother." he said and he goes to hug Stephen, who was taken aback by this. "All right." Stephen mutters as Mordo pulls back from his embrace. "Come, and tell me everything...About your universe." Mordo said and he turns and walks towards the Sanctum.
Stephen turns to the kids, who both looked confused. "We go on red." Stephen said and he walks in, the kids follow soon after.
"You're quite formidable too, it seems. A multiversal traveler. But thank the stars you brought Doctor Strange to safety." Mordo said to America once he finished pouring some tea for the three new guests. "Well, just 'cause we jumped ship, doesn't mean we're safe. Our Wanda has the ability to conjure demons and monsters to attack America - in other universes." Stephen explained as Mordo sits in the chair across from him.
"So she has the Darkhold?" Mordo asked. "Oh, you know of the Darkhold?" Stephen asked, surprised. "Oh, yes. We have a Darkhold in this universe, too. I got it here in this Sanctum. We would never risk a weapon that dangerous falling into the wrong hands." Mordo said. "Damn right." Stephen mutters.
"If your Darkhold is anything like ours, I'm afraid she can do far worse than just summon monsters, to come after you." Mordo said. "What do you mean?" America asked Mordo. "There is a spell contained within those pages. Corrosive to the soul. A desecration of reality itself. Dreamwalking. A dreamwalking sorcerer projects their own consciousness from their universe into another. Possessing the body of an alternate self. Playing puppeteer, this unholy doppelganger, and pursue their enemies from afar. The possession is not a permanent link between realities, but in the fleeting time they dreamwalk, they can do irreparable damage to the universe they invade. So it may not be a demon that you face. It may be, the Scarlet Witch." Mordo explains.
"But, why didn't she do that to begin with?" Vincent asked. "Because that was her being reasonable." Stephen said then he turns to Mordo. "What do you know of the Book of Vishanti?" He asked. "The Darkhold's antithesis. It can give a sorcerer whatever power they need to vanquish their enemy." Mordo said.
"I need to..." Stephen said as he stands up but then suddenly he felt woozy and disoriented. "What was in that tea?" Stephen asked as he shakes his head while he felt cloudy and heavy. "I'm sorry, Stephen. But I hope you, of all people, understand...That it is not Wanda Maximoff who threatens our reality. It's the three of you." Mordo said as America and Vincent both pass out on their chairs.
"You son of a b..." Stephen said, sounding like it was slow motion, then he falls to the floor and looks over at a device with sands inside of it. "Sands of Nisanti." Stephen mutters, realization. "I only acted, as you would." Mordo said as the darkness overcomes Stephen's vision. "She is coming. You got me." Stephen whispers before he passes out.
Meanwhile, back at Kamar-Taj, Wanda was doing the Dreamwalking ritual while Wong had his arms up and tied to two different poles, standing, and (y/n) had her hands tied behind her back and was held up against a large Pilar. Both of their restraints were made from the red magic Wanda conjured up.
The two Sorcerers watch Wanda then (y/n) looks down in sadness. She was extremely worried about Stephen and those two kids. She didn't know where they were or what universe they were in since America's ability was able to let her go across the Multiverse.
Then the two hear some footsteps and they turn to see Sara, a fellow Sorcerer, coming up between Wong and (y/n). "You're alive." Wong said, shocked, and Sara smiles at him. "Yes. But so many others were lost." She said.
"Set us free. We need to destroy the book." (Y/n) tells her. "No. It cannot be you." Sara said then she looks over at Wong. "Or you." She said and she places a hand on his cheek for a moment then she runs towards Wanda.
"No!" Wong and (y/n) shout as Sara grabs the Darkhold then uses a knife to stab it, which snapped Wanda out of her trance. Once the knife hit the book, it started to disintegrate but it also turned Sara to ash. Wong and (y/n) couldn't do anything as they watch in horror and Wanda falls over on the ground.
Then she breathes out heavy, panicked breaths and she gets up on her knees. "Billy. Tommy." she said as if she still could see and talk to them, but with destruction of the Darkhold they weren't there anymore. She looks around and sees the destroyed book and runs over to it. "No. No." She cries as the book falls apart. She sobs for a moment but then turns her head and glares at Wong and (y/n).
Wong is thrown out into the courtyard and he lands with a loud thud and rolls while Wanda uses magic to raise (y/n) up from the ground then placed her in the middle of the courtyard and set down in front of Wanda, freeing her from her restraints. "I need the Darkhold spells. You are the Sorcererss Supreme. Tell me what you know." Wanda demands (y/n).
"You'll have to kill me, witch." (Y/n) said in a low voice. "Not you. Especially since you are carrying a child. But them." she said and she raises her hand and a few Sorcerers, that were still alive, rise up in the air. Then she slowly clenches her hand and the Sorcerers all started to groan and scream in pain.
(Y/n) looks up at them, worried, before she glares at Wanda. "I don't know, Wanda. That's the only way to use the Darkhold spells." (Y/n) said. "You're lying." Wanda said and she uses magic to torture the other but (y/n) wouldn't budge. "Fine...then it'll be him." Wanda said as she let's the other Sorcerers go and begins to torture Wong.
"Wong!" (Y/n) screamed as Wong clenches his teeth to hold back the cries of pain he was feeling. "Wanda, stop. Wanda, please." (Y/n) pleads to her but she continued with the torture. (Y/n) couldn't take seeing her best friend getting tortured like this and she closes her eyes as tears try to escape.
"The Darkhold was a copy!" she shouts and Wanda turns to her and lets Wong go. "A copy?" She asked and Wong raises his head up. "(Y/n)...no..." he said, weakly, and (y/n) opens her eyes and turns to Wanda. "Legend speaks of a mountain with the wretched spells you seek carved into its walls. It's there the Darkhold was transcribed. Mount Wundagore." she said. "Wundagore?" Wanda asked.
"No one has survived the journey." (Y/n) said and Wanda waves her hand and a sling ring flies towards (y/n), who catches it. "Perhaps we will be the exception." Wanda said as (y/n) looks at the ring then back at her.
