Chapter 2: You Changed My Spell!
Peter follows Stephen and (y/n) downstairs into an ancient sublevel filled with crypts. As Stephen and (y/n) prepare items for the spell, Peter looks around, spooked. "So what is this place?" Peter asked. "The Sanctum’s built at the intersection of cosmic energy currents. We weren’t the first to seek ‘em." (Y/n) explains.
"Some of these walls are thousands of years old. And they shot an episode of The Equalizer here in the ‘80s." Stephen adds and (y/n) chuckles a bit. "Well, I um...really appreciate you doing this for me, sir and ma'am." Peter said. "Don’t mention it. And don’t call me sir." Stephen said and Peter smiles. "And don't call me, ma'am." (Y/n) said and Peter nods.
"Right, sorry." He said and (y/n) smiles back at him as her and Stephen finish gather everything they needed. "You ready?" She asked him and Peter nods. "I’m ready." Peter said and Stephen raises hands and smiles at Peter. "Nice knowing you, Spider-Man." He said and he begins to cast the spell, a golden ring of runes encircles them. Then Peter's smile falters.
"Wait, excuse me?" He asked. "The entire world’s about to forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, including me and (y/n)." Stephen explains. "Everyone?" Peter asked, panicked, and he runs up to the two sorcerers'. "Uh...can’t some people still know?" He asked. "That’s not how the spell works. And it’s very difficult and dangerous to change it, midcasting." (Y/n) explained as Peter becomes anxious.
"So my girlfriend’s just gonna forget about everything we’ve been through? I mean, is she even gonna be my girlfriend?" Peter asked. "That depends. Was she your girlfriend just ‘cause you’re Spider-Man, or--" Stephen started to ask as (y/n) said. "Stephen!"
"I mean, I don’t know. I really hope not!" Peter said and Stephen sighs. "All right, fine." He said then he works to adjust the spell. "Everyone in the world’s gonna forget that you’re Spider-Man, except your girlfriend." He said and Peter sighs with relief. "Thank you so much, that--" Peter started to say but stops when he realized something.
"Oh my God, Ned. Ned!" He exclaims and a rune from the rings flies towards Stephen, but (y/n) catches it. "What is a Ned?” she asked as she looks at the runes then tosses it aside. "He’s my best friend, so it’s really important to me that Ned knows." Peter replied, quickly, and Stephen sighs and works to adjust the spell. Again.
"Okay. Let’s not change the parameters of this spell any more while he's casting it." (Y/n) said as Stephen tries to concentrate. "Okay, I’m done. I’m done. I swear I’m done. I’m done." He said then he got reminded of something else. "Ah! But my Aunt May should really know!" He said. "Peter, stop tampering with the spell." Stephen said. "When she found out that I was;Spider-Man, it was really messy and I don’t think that I can go through with that again." Peter said.
So Stephen swipes his hands, begins further spell adjustments. Four golden rings of runes now swirl about them. "So, my Aunt May?" Peter asked. "Yes!" Stephen replied. "Oh, thank you, thank you--" Peter said. "So, can we please stop changing..." (y/n) started to say when Peter speaks up again.
"Happy?" He said. "No, I’m annoyed!" Stephen said, angrily. "No, it’s a nickname. Harold Happy Hogan. He used to work for Tony Stark, but then he was kind of dating my aunt, and they broke up--" Peter explains, quickly, and the spell shifts, wavering, almost becoming erratic. "Peter, please! Stop talking!" (Y/n) said but at that moment the spell erupts.
Stephen and (y/n) are lifted to their feet, followed by Peter. The jumbled spell billows in rings around them. The room shatters and shakes. Something is clearly, horribly wrong!
Peter shouts over the chaos. "Basically everyone that knew that I was Spider-Man before should still know!"
The duo sorcerers' struggle with the spell as it blasts its way around them, ripping apart the crypt walls...unusual shadows appear. With quick thinking and great effort, (y/n) shrinks the spell smaller and smaller, until--
Peter, (y/n) and Stephen drop to the ground, the walls around them reassembled and whole. Peter turns to see that the spell is now a ball of light, trapped inside a pentagon-shaped orb. "Did it work?" Peter asked. "No. You changed my spell six times--" Stephen said, in a low angry voice.
"Five times." Peter corrected, meekly. "You changed my spell! You don’t do that! We told you...And that is why!" Stephen yells as he points at the now-tiny spell jostling within the orb. "That spell was completely out of control. If (y/n) hadn’t shut it down, something catastrophic could have happened!" Stephen shouts.
"Stephen, listen, I am so sorry--" Peter said but Stephen interrupts him. "Call me sir." He said and a moment of silence lands between them as Peter looks down. "Sorry, sir." Peter said, softly, and (y/n) frowns as Stephen scratches his forehead with his thumb. "You know, after everything we’ve been through together, somehow I always forget you’re...you’re just a kid." He said.
The words weigh heavily on Peter, now feeling lower than low. (Y/n) clocks it as she walks up to him and places a hand on his shoulder. "Look, Peter, the problem is not Mysterio. It’s you. Trying to live two different lives, and the longer you do that the more dangerous it becomes. Believe me." She said and Peter nods, sadly, and (y/n) removes her hand off of his shoulder.
"I’m so sorry about you and your friends not getting into college. But if they rejected you, and you tried to convince them to reconsider, there’s nothing else you can do." Stephen said and Peter looks up at him, his brow furrowed in confusion.
"When you say convince them, you mean like I could have called them?" Peter asked and Stephen turns to him. "Yeah." He said. "I can do that?" Peter asked and now it was Stephen's turn to look confused. Meanwhile, (y/n) was looking between them.
"You haven’t called the--" Stephen said, incredulous. "Well, I mean, I got their letter and I assumed that that was--" Peter explained, quickly, and Stephen moves aside the basin, holding the trapped spell, as he walks up to Peter. "I’m sorry, are you telling me that you didn’t even think to plead your case with them first before you asked us to brainwash the entire world?!" Stephen asked him, angrily, as he stands right in front of Peter.
Peter stares at him for a moment before he gulps and says. "Well, I mean, when you put it like that, then--"
Next thing Peter knew, he was standing in front of the Sanctum, the front door shut on his face. Inside, Stephen was still fuming as he heads to the staircase. "I knew something was about to happen, but you just had to convince me to help with that spell…." (Y/n) said, annoyed, as she walks up beside him. Stephen rolls his eyes at this then said. "Look, we've contained it. It should be fine."
"Excuse me, we? I think you meant I contained it." (Y/n) said as she places her hands on her hips as she raises an eyebrow at him. “It’s contained, that’s all that matters. What’s the worse that could happen?” He remarks. “Anything could happen!” (y/n) sighed then rubs her eyes. "I'm gonna go meditate." She said and she walks off while Stephen sighs, shakes his head and goes to another room.
But that's when Stephen got a detection of an unworldly creature. He sighs and goes to take care of it himself.
Meanwhile, Peter was dealing with a guy with four mechanical arms on the bridge. He was able to save a woman from MIT as he was able to detained the man, Doc Ock. As he started to ask him question, Peter’s Spider-Senses go off and a man in green Goblin armor on a glider threw a bomb.
He was about to attack Peter but, quickly, Peter materializes alone in the dark. He looks around, confused, his senses flaring. Cautious, Peter deactivates the Iron Spider suit and takes a few steps. "Doctor--" Peter started to say when a creature lunges with slashing claws and teeth behind him. Peter jumps back in shock, as the monster hits an invisible barrier, a cell so to speak.
Doc Ock storms at Peter but he too hits an invisible barrier. Peter staggers backward when a hand clamps his shoulder. Peter screams, whips around to see Stephen, now battered and bruised. "Be careful what you wish for, Parker." Stephen said as Ock pounds on the barrier. "Let me out of here!" He shouts.
"Can you please explain to me what is going on?" Peter asked, panicked. "That little spell that you botched where you wanted everyone to forget that Peter Parker’s Spider-Man, it started pulling in everyone who knows Peter Parker’s Spider-Man --from every universe -- into this one." Stephen explains.
"From every universe?" Peter asked, shocked. "Who are you? And where am I?!" Doc Ock asked Strange, who ignores him. "I think it’s better we don’t engage with them because frankly the Multiverse is a concept about which we know frighteningly little--" Stephen said, emphasizing the last few words. "The Multiverse is real?!" Peter said, amazed, and Stephen sighs.
"This shouldn’t even be possible." Stephen mutters. "But I thought (y/n) stopped the spell." Peter said, questioning. "No, she contained it. "But it would appear that a few of them squeaked through." Stephen said as he looks over at Doc Ock then back at Peter.
"After you left, I detected an otherworldly presence, I pursued it into the sewers, where I found that---Slimy, green son of a gun." Stephen said as he points at the large Lizard man. “Spell? As in magic? What is this, a birthday party? Who is this clown? What is this madness?!" Doc Ock asked, confused.
"Watch this." Stephen mutters to Peter then he turns to Doc Ock. "Do you know a Peter Parker who’s Spider-Man?" He asked. "Yes." replied Ock and Stephen points at Peter. "Is that him?" He asked. "No." Ock replied and Stephen turns to Peter. "See?" He said as Peter considers that.
"Okay, here’s what we gotta do. I don’t know how many of these visitors we’ve got--" Stephen starts to say but Peter gasps. "I saw another one. On the bridge. He was like a...like a flying green elf." he said. "Well he sounds jolly. Why don’t you start with him. I need you to capture them, bring them here, while I figure out how to get them back before they destroy the fabric of reality. Or worse, (y/n) finds out." Stephen said as he starts to turn away.
"Find out about what?" (Y/n)'s voice asked and Stephen stops in his tracks as he sees her. She stands at the doorway, her hands on her hips as she looks at him. "Shit..." Stephen mutters. "Stephen...what's wrong?" She asked as she walks deeper into the room then noticed the large Lizard creature and Doc Ock and then noticed Peter standing behind Stephen.
"What the hell?" (Y/n) asked as she looks between the two. “I’m guessing this has something to do with them?” She gestured to Doc Ock and Lizard. Stephen bites his lips while Peter looks between the two. She sighs and rubs at her temple. “Don’t tell me. The spell brought them here?” she asked. "Then I won't tell you." Stephen said and (y/n) sighs and she pinches the bridge of her nose.
“Someone should’ve told you that there are severe consequences regarding that spell. Oh wait? I did.” (Y/n) remarks, with annoyed sarcasm, as she looks up at him. “Well congratulations, want an award for that, Sorceress Supreme?” Stephen sneered, while Peter and Doc Ock look between the two.
“Wipe that attitude, Strange.” (y/n) said, warningly, as she raises a finger and points at him. “Look, I'm handling it, so please, don't make a big deal out of it.” Stephen said. “Well excuse me, but I don’t think I got the memo that says you’re in charge here.” she shouts. "Uh, guys..." Peter said, quietly, but the two sorcerers continued to argue.
“If I recall, you’re the one who helped cast the spell.” Stephen said, angrily. “That’s because you convinced me to help with that look of yours. I should’ve put my foot down harder but nope I gave into you even when knowing the risks.” (y/n) said, her voice raising.
"Uh...guys?" Peter said, louder, and the couple quickly turn to him. "What?" they said, in unison, angrily. "My friends and I just got a second chance to get into MIT, and if the school sees me fighting these crazy monsters, then--" Peter explains then Doc Ock looks over at Peter.
"Hey, watch your mouth!" He yells, offended. "I’m sorry, but--" Peter said as he turns to Doc Ock and Stephen sighs. "You’re seriously still talking about college?!" He asked then he magically flies one of Peter’s web shooters off his
wrist and into his hand. He sends a switl of magic into it.
"Hey, what did you just do?" Peter asked Stephen. "This." Stephen said and he aims the web shooter and webs Peter. Peter disappears and reappears inside of a cell. "Hey, you can’t just--" Peter said as he walks into the magical cell wall, knocking him back.
Doc Ock looks over at Stephen, dumbfounded. "How did you do that?" He asked. "Lots of birthday parties." Stephen said, sarcastically, then (y/n) crosses to an ancient stone dial and turns it. Peter’s cell barrier drops, and he steps out. "Hey--" he said and Stephen flies the enchanted web shooter back onto Peter’s hand.
"Whoa..." Peter said, taking it in. "One shot, send them here, move on. You’re welcome. Get to work." Stephen said and he walks over to (y/n). "C'mon...." he mutters to her and they start to walk off but then Peter speaks up. "Sir?"
"Now what?" Stephen asked, with a sigh, as they turn to Peter. "I know this is my mess, and I swear to you that I’ll fix it, but I’m gonna need some help." Peter said.
Later, in the foyer of the Sanctum, Ned and MJ are led in by Stephen and (y/n). "I can’t believe I’m in the Sanctum Sanctorum!" Ned exclaims, amazed. (Y/n) smirks a bit but Stephen was not amused by any of this. "Neither can I." He grumbles and (y/n) elbows his side. "Be nice." She mutters to him.
"So, how did you guys know you were made of magic? Because my nana says that we have it in our family and sometimes I get these tinglings in my hands--" Ned asked then Stephen turns to him. "You should talk to your physician." He said then he goes up the stairs, (y/n) stands near the stairs, while Peter walks up from the basement.
"Peter!" MJ said and she goes to hug him. "Hey! I’m so sorry for dragging you into this. Listen, you just gotta help me find these guys--" Peter said then MJ talks over him. "You don’t have to apologize, okay? You got us a second shot at MIT." She said.
"So, how did the bad guys get here?" Ned asked and Peter hesitates but (y/n) doesn't. "He screwed up a spell trying to get you into college." She said and MJ looks over at her then back at Peter. "Wait, what? I thought it was the MIT lady you saved." She asked while Ned asked. "You did it with magic?!"
"Uh, no, that was after. Listen let’s just focus on the good news, okay?" Peter replied to them. "No, let’s just focus on the bad news: as of now, you have detected zero multiversal trespassers, so...get on your phones, scour the Internet, and Scooby-Doo this shit." Stephen said as he makes it up on the top of the stairs.
"You’re telling us what to do even though it was your spell that got screwed up, meaning that all of this is kinda your mess. You know, I know a couple of magic words myself, starting with the word please.” MJ said and (y/n) snorts out a laugh while Stephen shrugs slightly and said, nicely. "Please Scooby-Doo this shit."
He walks off and (y/n) turns to the kids. "I'll take you down to the Undercroft. You kids can work down there." She said. "The Undercroft?!" Ned asked, awed.
Moments later, (y/n) turns the light on to reveal the Undercroft, a normal, boring basement. "Badass!" Ned said, impressed, and (y/n) chuckles. Then the buzzer of the dryer goes off while the kids take in the Christmas decorations, camping stuff.
(Y/n) goes over to the dryer and uses magic to make the clothes fly out and fold itself while Ned grabs a crossbow, in awe. "Kid, be careful with that." (Y/n) warns him then he walks up next to her as he watches her use magic to fold clothes.
"Guys, listen, about this whole spell thing--" Peter started to say then MJ speaks up. "It’s totally okay." She said. "Wait really?" Peter asked. "Yeah. I mean, I get it. You were
just trying to fix things. And so, maybe just run it by us next time, you know? That way when you’re thinking, Hey, I’m about to do something that could break the universe, we could, like, help you. Workshop something...or brainstorm ideas..." she said and they share a smirk.
"Deal." Peter said then his eyes shift to Ned. "Ned?" He asked and Ned turns to him. "Oh, dude, I don’t care. It’s seriously not a big deal." he said then he goes back to watch the clothes fold itself until the last clothing item finished folding.
"That is so cool!" He said and (y/n) smiles at him and Ned looks around and noticed something else. "Oh! A torture rack!" He said, excited. "That is a Pilates machine." MJ said then she points to the other room. "That is...?" She asked.
"The crypt." (y/n) said as she walks up next to the kids. "Like Stephen said, Peter, find these visitors, use your little web shooter to send them here and Stephen and I will send them back." She said and Peter nods. "Yes, ma'am." He said. "Let’s catch some Multiverse Men." He said.
"Hey! Who the hell are these two?" Doc Ock asked as he gestures at MJ and Ned. "These are my friends. This is MJ and uh, this is Ned." Peter said.
"Hey."
"Hello."
"Uh, I’m sorry, what was your name again?" Peter asked Doc Ock. "Doctor Otto Octavius." Doc Ock said then the three teens start to laugh while (y/n) bites back a smile. "Wait, no seriously, what’s your actual name?" Peter asked then Ned notices the Lizard. "Oh, is that a dinosaur?!" He asked while, from his cell, the Lizard scowls, unamused.
