Chapter 5
"What were you thinking?" Lou asked as he sat at down at Lee's desk.
Lou had been called just after his lunch with his wife by a "concerned member of staff" who had been on her way into the hospital when she saw Carly sitting crying outside. Carly hadn't told her what had made her so upset, but someone else had. Neither Lee nor Carly had noticed it, but their spat in the cafeteria had apparently attracted quite some attention. Lou had been notified and he arrived back at the hospital in a very bad mood.
"I was just telling her how it is" Lee defended himself.
"That's a lie" Lou said. "Unless you truly believe that half our patients die? Come on Lee! That's a PR disaster waiting to happen! We can't have anyone talking like that".
"It's not like anyone heard me. I don't see why she took it to heart anyway"
"I'm pretty sure she wasn't expecting the person supposed to be training her to be so angry at her. She was only trying to be nice to you. What's the harm in that?"
"I told you, you should have let Phil take care of her" Lee said angrily. "Or maybe she's just not ready. She's just a kid".
"She's 24"
"Same thing" Lee said after a brief pause. The truth was he didn't actually know how old Carly was. He hadn't paid her transcript that much attention.
"Lee" Lou sighed. "I know how you feel towards working with others, and I get it ok. You've spent most of your life on your own so why should now be any different, right?"
"What's that got to with anything?" Lee said with great annoyance. He hated that Lou knew even a little bit of his life story.
"There's nothing Wong with doing well on your own. In fact, I think it's a fairly commendable trait. The thing is though, that you're not on your own now. You are part of a team now whether you like it or not. If you can't acknowledge that then I'm afraid I have to give you an official warning" Lou said, the regret in his voice clear. He knew Lee would hate this.
"What!?"
"I'm sorry" Lou said. "My decision is made". He got up and left Lee to stew over his first ever 'Warning'.
What did that even mean anyway? He'd have to dig out his hospital induction papers tonight and find out.
It was then that he remembered about the review sheet that he'd been given that morning. He rummaged around his desk until he found it and began looking through the questions it asked.
Most were pretty basic, such as:
Does the trainee require assistance on a regular basis?
Does the trainee often make mistakes?
Does the trainee have confidence when dealing with others?
Before he knew it, Lee wrote "No" in each column.
"This is better than burning it" He thought to himself.
What was your first impression of the trainee?
"The trainee struggles to contain her emotions and can often get very agitated which leads to disturbing several members of staff" Lee said aloud as he wrote.
How does the trainee handle taking orders?
"The trainee ignores advice given to her by her mentor and does the exact opposite of what she is told. The trainee then appears to turn into an emotional wreck when she is reprimanded for her disobedience" He wrote again.
How has the trainee settled into the hospital?
"The trainee has shown reluctance to make friends with any of her co workers and spends her lunch breaks outside away from everyone, not allowing her to settle properly".
Finally, do you feel that the trainee could add anything to the current team of doctors and nurses at the hospital?
"It is my opinion that the trainee may struggle to add much to the team at this time as she is often quick to worry about things that are irrelevant to anything which may cause some staff and patients some distress. It is also my opinion that the trainee is perhaps too inexperienced to be working at such a large hospital at this time".
Lee looked over what he'd written then wiped his forehead, realising he'd started to sweat whilst writing it.
"Look at that" He said to himself, "Even when I'm pissed I can write a pretty punctual letter". He laughed then scrunched the sheet up into a ball and threw it over his head onto the floor. He felt much better after writing down his feelings. Maybe he'd suggest it to Carly the next time she decided to start crying, so that she wouldn't get him into trouble again.
By the time dusk had set across the city, Lee had finished early and headed to the bar near his apartment straight after work. He hadn't seen Carly again that day after the lunchtime incident, but he was still annoyed after getting his "Warning".
He entered the bar and asked for a Bud and sat down and looked up at one of the many televisions that were scattered around the room. He liked this bar. It was never too busy and the barman never spoke to him once the drinks and money had been exchanged. It had a couple of pool tables in one corner, and two darts boards across the room in the opposite corner. It was a fairly dark place with wooden furnishings everywhere you looked. The dim lights reflected Lee's mood perfectly most of the time.
Once he got his beer, he looked around at the tables around the room. Not even half of them were filled.
He looked back as the bartender planted his bottle onto the counter. Lee paid for his drink and took a huge sip straight away.
"Rough day?" The bartender asked, having watched Lee drain a quarter of the bottle in one go.
"You have no idea" Lee said, distracted by an advert for the upcoming football game on the TV.
"Wanna talk about it?" Asked the barman.
"Absolutely not" Lee replied.
