Chapter 35
Lee and his team managed to stabilise the stab victim but he was now only breathing with the aid of a ventilator. Now all they could do was wait and see how he was. Apparently the police had caught the man who had stabbed him but they still arrived at the hospital to get the doctors to make a statement for the purposes of any trial that the man might stand. This didn't happen often, but it happened enough for it not to faze Lee anymore.
Once he'd given his statement and explained the man's condition to them, he headed to where he knew Carly's meeting was taking place. In between his rushing his patient around, he'd bumped into Lou and reminded him about the review sheet.
"We've got it, don't worry!" Lou said quickly before urging Lee to get back to his task at hand. Now that he was able to relax a little bit, he slowly made his way to the office block. It was half an hour after the meeting had been scheduled to start and the fact that he hadn't seen Carly since made him assume that it was still going on. He didn't know how long these things usually lasted as he'd never been this interested in them before.
It wasn't much longer until it did end and Carly burst through the door at the speed of light.
"Hey how'd it go?" Lee asked, approaching her.
"Stay away from me!" She snapped.
"What?" Lee squinted.
"I can't believe you! I actually thought you changed! I guess you were just using me after all!" Carly screamed.
"Carly, what are you talking about?"
"I will never, ever forgive you for this!" She cried again before storming away from him. Lee was about to go after her until he saw Lou shuffling out of the room.
"What the hell's going on?" He asked his superior.
"Lee, I'm very disappointed in you" Lou said with his head bowed.
"Why?"
"I know you were never really that into the idea of mentoring Carly but this is low. Even for you"
"Can someone please tell me what the hell is going on?" Lee was getting as angry as Carly now.
"The review sheet Lee! You gave her a scathing review and now the board don't want her working in the hospital" Lou scolded him.
"I gave her the best review possible!" Lee pleaded.
"Oh, don't give me that" Lou sighed before walking away and leaving Lee to simply laugh, even though he didn't find any of this funny at all.
He eventually trekked back to his office and after a moment of searching, found the review sheet that he'd filled out earlier in the day. So they hadn't got it.
"Look, here's the damn sheet!" Lee screeched as he stormed into Lou's office, not caring if he walked in on anything like last time. He slammed the sheet down onto the desk before Lou considered it.
"Where did you get this?" He asked.
"You gave it to me earlier! I filled it out and left it on my desk. You said you had it but clearly you didn't so someone tell me what the deal is!" Lee was no longer angry. He was furious!
"This isn't the one that Susan gave me" Lou muttered.
"Susan?" Lee asked. They both shared a confused glance before shooting off to confront the hospital receptionist.
"How can I help you doctors?" She asked when they marched in front of her.
"Where did you get Carly's review sheet?" Lee demanded more than asked.
"I've had it for months" She shrugged.
"What?" Gasped Lee and Lou together.
"Yeah, one of the cleaners gave it to me. She said that she found it on the floor in your office and assumed that I would need it" She explained.
Lee's stomach lurched as I finally dawned on him what must have happened. He had just presumed that the first review sheet that he'd filled out was in the trash but apparently it wasn't. Lou was right, it was a scathing review.
"I don't understand" Lou asked, looking to Lee for some answers.
"I've seriously fucked up" Lee gasped. "Can you give them this sheet? Will they change their mind?"
"I . . . I can try but I can't make any promises. Nurse Oliver is already on her way home though" Lou tried to think of any alternatives.
"Leave her to me, you just go and get that sheet to the board" Lee made to run out the door to chase after Carly but was yanked back by Lou.
"You can't leave! What about your patients!"
Lee wanted to argue but there was no point. Lou was right. Not only was there the stab victim to keep an eye on but there was everyone else too.
He called Carly multiple times but every one of them went to voicemail. He left messages and sent texts trying to explain the mix up to her but he wasn't getting a reply.
He mulled around the hospital for the rest of his shift, trying to stay focussed, all the while checking his phone at every available opportunity but Carly still hadn't gotten back to him.
This was a mess. Not only had he ruined his relationship, but he may also have ended Carly's career.
