Chapter 34
After the excitement of the barbecue had died down and everyone had gotten over the shock of Lee's antics and Carly's incredible voice, everything seemed to return to normal. But everything wasn't normal. Carly's interview with the hospital board was fast approaching and she was beginning to get nervous. Lee did his best to assure her that everything would be fine but it didn't ease her tension one bit.
Lou entered Lee's office and handed him a sheet of paper.
"What's this?" The younger doctor asked.
"Nurse Oliver's review sheet. Seeing as you burned the last one!" Lou laughed.
"I actually resisted that temptation. But thanks, I do need another one"
"Can you believe how different things are since we last had this conversation" Lou said thoughtfully. The amount of things that had changed made it seem like much longer than six months had passed.
"It's scary" Lee admitted. "But I think their all for the better"
Lou nodded in agreement. "We still on for tomorrow night?" He changed the subject.
"Yeah sure. My place at 7:30?"
"Perfect. Fill that out and get it dropped to reception when you get a chance. I've got to go" Lou suddenly seemed anxious.
"Where you going?" Lee asked, noticing the change in his body language.
"Um . .. I'm just about to get the results of that colonoscopy I did the other day" He said so quietly that he almost couldn't be heard.
"Say no more" Lee laughed, practically shooing Lou away now. He figured that now was as good a time as any to fill out the sheet. He knew it wouldn't take him long and if he was honest, he was desperate to get it done so that he could once again assure Carly that she had nothing to worry about.
He took the sheet and began to answer all the questions.
Does the trainee require assistance on a regular basis?
"No".
Does the trainee often make mistakes?
"Never".
Does the trainee have confidence dealing with others?
"Yes".
What was your first impression of the trainee?
Lee decided that his first impression was still the same, because he couldn't change the past. But he decided to look at it from another angle.
"The trainee is very enthusiastic and is always determined to help out patients and to ensure that their wellbeing is always her first priority".
How does the trainee handle taking orders?
"The trainee always listens to orders from her superiors or those more qualified than her when they suggest something".
How has the trainee settled into the hospital?
"The trainee has settled very well in the hospital. She has become one of the most popular members of staff with not just her colleagues, but with all of the patients as well.
Finally, do you feel that the trainee could add anything to the current team of doctors and nurses at the hospital?
It is my opinion that Nurse Oliver can add a great deal to the current team. She is a fantastic nurse and will do a lot of great work if given the chance.
Once he finished, he read over his answers twice to make sure that he was happy with them. Satisfied, he made to get up and hand it into reception but stopped in his tracks once a nurse barged into his office.
"Doctor Dawson, we need you right away!" She yelped. Lee threw the sheet onto his desk and followed the nurse to find that a man had been rushed in with blood pouring out of his stomach.
"What's happened?" He asked.
"He's been stabbed. We're not sure what the damage is yet" Replied the nurse. Lee took over the gurney and rushed the man through into a vacant room so that they could see as quickly as possible if they could help the man pull through.

Carly paced anxiously outside the small office. She'd never been to this part of the hospital before, not even on her dull tour with Lee on her first day. Apparently it was only used for important meetings such as this or for anything involving a lawyer.
She had hoped that Lee would be in the meeting with her for support but she heard about the stab victim so understood that he was preoccupied. She heard a door opening down the hall and for a split second she wondered if it was Lee but her hope was short lived as she saw Lou approaching through the doorway instead.
"Are you ready?" He asked her.
"As I'll ever be" She said nervously.
"It's going to be fine. You haven't killed any patients and all the staff loves you. That's basically all they're looking for" Lou joked to try and cheer her up. It worked, even if only for a moment. Lou opened the door and held it open for the nurse to enter first. After one last wishful glance down the corridor, Carly went inside.
