Chapter 33
Apparently it was tradition for Phil to do the first song on karaoke and no one seemed willing to argue with him. He started off by doing a rather disturbing version of Madonna's "Like a Virgin" which Lee noted he'd also want to erase from his mind.
Susan was up next and sang a surprisingly good rendition of "I Love Rock And Roll", followed by rapturous applause from the audience.
"She's always so quiet at work" Lee whispered in awe.
"You obviously haven't had a gossip with her" Carly said. She leaned her head against Lee's shoulder and hugged him tightly, feeling bad about having a go at him about singing.
Lou then took to the stage and seemed to wait an age before he started to sing. The guitar riff that eventually started to play was unmistakeably "Sweet Child o' Mine". Once again Lee was surprised. He hadn't thought of Lou as a Guns 'n Roses kind of guy. It was only really setting in how little he knew about everyone that he worked with. He also figured that it was the same story for everyone else. They all knew very little about him, other than the fact that he hated everybody and then had suddenly become" Doctor Happy". Any stories that Carly had told them about the fun times they'd had had probably been brushed off as lies. Who would believe anything about what he had been up to lately? It was at that moment he decided that he'd show them. He'd show them how much fun Doctor Happy really could be. He also made a vow to help Carly's confidence. He was still shocked that she was nervous and thought it such a shame. She was so bubbly and friendly and he figured that she deserved for everyone to see how talented she was. He'd only seen her sing once, during her Rolling Stones lesson, but that was enough to convince him that this was worth pursuing.
Once Lou had finished his average attempt at reliving his youth, it was time for Lee to make his move.
"Who's up next?" Phil called into the microphone that was set up next to his karaoke machine.
"I am!" Lee shouted, forcing everyone to turn around and stare at him. For some it was the first words they'd ever heard him say.
"What the hell are you doing?" Carly whispered to him in fear.
"I'm singing" He smirked before strutting towards Phil, whose jaw still hadn't lifted off the floor.
He grabbed the microphone and stared out at his captivated audience. He couldn't believe he was about to do this.
Carly watched on in a mixture of fascination and horror as the music began. She prayed that this wasn't the song that she thought it was. Sadly for her, it was.
"She's in to superstitions, black cats and voodoo dolls!" Lee began singing "Livin' La Vida Loca". And he was murdering it. He may have been a great doctor but he certainly wasn't a great singer. It didn't stop him though (if anything, it encouraged him) as he continued singing and even began dancing as if he had been possessed by a demon.
Towards the end of the song, the already bizarre situation got even weirder. Lee had broken out in a huge sweat as this was probably the most movement he'd ever done. However that only assisted his master plan. Before he began the chorus for the last time, he suddenly ripped open his shirt and threw it on to the floor!
Doctor Dawson was topless and gyrating to a Ricky Martin song. Words that no one ever thought they'd say.
Carly's jaw dropped so far she thought she felt it burning in the flames of the underworld. There were a few screams, a few gasps and even wolf whistle from someone in the crowd but when Lee finished, it was as if everyone had vanished. They all stood in silence, unable to comprehend what they'd just witnessed.
"What the hell did you put in this wine?" Susan asked Phil, who was just as flabbergasted as everyone else.
"Thank you!" Lee called, deciding that he didn't want to wait around to see what would happen next. He dropped the mic and picked up his shirt before jogging off the stage, his run being followed by what felt like a thousand sets of eyes.
By the time he got back to Carly, he'd re-buttoned most of his shirt.
"What the hell!"She shrieked.
"Did you like it?" He asked, unable to stop smiling. He knew he'd been thinking it a lot lately but this was the most fun he'd had in ages!
"Are you kidding? That was the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen!" Carly felt short of breath. She was THAT surprised. "But it was fucking awesome!" She cried, throwing her arms around him.
"You remember what we said?" He asked, breaking away from her hold. She sighed but nodded.
"Doctor Happy strips and Nurse Oliver sings" She laughed before walking towards where Lee had performed his routine.
The audience had calmed down by the time she was ready to start, and so they all stood in silence, waiting for Carly to begin. None of them watched more closely than Lee though. He couldn't take his eyes off her and she hadn't even started yet.
When she finally did, it was the softest voice he had ever heard. It was beautiful.
"An old man, turned 98. He won the lottery, and died the next day" She sang. For the first time that night, no one sang along. They all just listened to the best singer that they'd ever heard. Certainly at a Phil Davis barbecue anyway. Her voice remained as soft as it had begun, not wavering once. Then when she broke into the chorus, everything changed. Her voice suddenly became much more powerful as she cried "It's like raaaaaaain on your wedding day. It's a free riiiiiide, when you've already paid. It's the good advice, that you just didn't take, and who would have thought, it figures!"
Carl had always loved Alanis Morissette and "Ironic" was always her first choice to sing to. When she finished she received the largest and most positive reaction of the night.
"That was amazing!" Lee told her as he hugged her upon her return.
"I hate you, you know that?" She smiled.
"You're starting to sound like me" He laughed.
The pair only remained for one more drink before heading off. They began to see what Lou meant about the chaos that ensued after a while as everyone began doing duets that they really shouldn't have been doing.
They got back to Carly's apartment and went straight to bed. They briefly stayed up, talking about everything that happened at the party and the miracle that was Phil keeping his insides to himself. However it wasn't long before they were both sound asleep.
Who knew performing was so exhausting?
