Chapter 28

They had continued drinking at the bar for another two hours, discussing various things including work, childhood friends, if Carly missed being at home and her lack of interest in sports (which Lee was bitterly disappointed about). By the time they decided to call it a night, Carly had originally planned to walk home but Lee insisted they go to his apartment and he could call her a taxi from there.

"Do you want a drink before I call you a cab?" He asked as they got in the door and took off their coats.

"Sure" Carly smiled, taking in the spacious living room, unaware that she was the first person other than Lee to set foot in it in over a year. Lee told her to head to the kitchen and take a couple of beers out of the fridge for them whilst he went to the bathroom. When he came out, Carly was waiting for him on the sofa with a huge smile on her face.

"What are you so happy about?" He asked, sitting down next to her.

"How much beer do you need? You have like three full shelves in there!"

"I'm a guy that lives by himself. That's pretty much the most important thing to have in the home" He laughed. "I've never met a girl that likes beer so much. What's up with that?"

"Nothing really. Why should every girl have to drink wine all the time? Equal rights!" Carly mocked a protest. Lee couldn't argue with that he supposed. "The same reason that guys can like Heart as well. They shouldn't be judged"

"Here we go"

"Have you listened to your CD yet?" Carly asked.

"Not exactly" He didn't want to tell her that he'd buried it in his "miscellaneous" drawer in the kitchen.

"You're missing out. One day you'll thank me"

"I doubt that"

"Well what music do you like? You make fun of mines all the time so let's see what you got!" Carly challenged.

"Always the classics. Aerosmith, The Who, Bon Jovi and the greatest rock and roll band of all time, The Rolling Stones". Doctor Dawson would never pass up an opportunity to tell someone how good he thought the Stones were. Carly didn't seem as impressed though.

"The Rolling Stones? How old are you? My dad listens to them!"

"Sounds like a smart man"

"I beg to differ" Sniggered Carly. "Why do you like them so much, aside from your age that is?"

"Because they're timeless. Think about it, every few years there's a fad in the music industry. For a while, rap was cool. It was the "in thing". But then it faded away and no one listens to it anymore. Hardcore dance was in for ages. You know, the music that sounds like our defibrillator from work? But again that's not cool anymore. Boy bands are in right now, but give it another year and there won't be any left. But during all this time, bands like the Stones have been around the whole time, still doing their thing and not fading away" Lee exhaled deeply as he finished what he hoped wasn't a rant.

"Interesting observations" Carly mused. She was impressed by his passion on the subject of bands she considered ancient.

"Timeless" Lee repeated. Carly's expression told him that she still wasn't quite on his side yet. "Come on! Everybody knows their songs. Paint it Black, Brown Sugar, Sympathy for the Devil? Give me something here!"

"Nope. Sorry" Carly loved watching him getting agitated for once. It was a total different kind of crazy then she was used to seeing from him.

"That's it" Lee shot out of his seat and crossed the room to a set of iPod speakers that Carly hadn't noticed before. He clicked away for a few seconds before the opening chords of "Start Me Up" by the Stones began reverberating around the room. "Now this is your lesson" He called over the music before breaking into what Carly could only describe as some sort of demented shuffle.

"What the hell is that!?" Carly couldn't contain her hysterics. There were almost tears coming out of her eyes at the sight of the proud Doctor Dawson clicking his fingers to the beat of the song.

"This is me groovin'!" He yelled back.

It was at that moment that Lee decided that he was drunk. He didn't care though; he was having the most fun he'd had for as long as he could remember. He watched Carly clapping along to the song while she shrieked with laughter at his moves and his awful singing along with the chorus. She even began singing "You make a grown man cry!" along with him, even though she didn't really know the song. Lee strutted over to her and offered her his hands.

"You want to dance?" He asked, pulling her up before she could answer. She screamed as he dragged her but was quickly pressed against him as they moved from side to side.

"I never imagined you as much of a dancer" She said.

"I'm not, that's why I need you to lead" Lee joked. He'd probably cracked more gags tonight than he had done in the 27 previous years of his life. Carly was so happy that she'd finally been able to crack open the protective, grumpy shell that she always saw encasing Lee Dawson. He was so much more than just a grumpy doctor. He was so much more than she could ever have imagined.

She was already surprised by Lee tonight, but that was taken to a whole new level when he suddenly kissed her, slowing their dancing so that they were almost completely still. This kiss felt so much more special than their one in her apartment. Carly clasped his face in her hands as she kissed him back, closing her eyes and letting all of her other senses magnify. She felt his hands grabbing her waist and holding her against his body, the closeness just making her want to kiss him harder. It was a perfect moment for Carly.

Lee felt like it was perfect too, until the song finished and the next one began. He suddenly realised that his iPod was set to shuffle the songs, and when he heard the "Ba ba da da da da da da da" introduction of "Let's Spend the Night Together", he didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Maybe the Stones weren't that great after all!

"Is everything ok?" Carly asked as she reluctantly pulled away from him. She'd felt his body stiffen and worried that something similar to last time was happening again.

"Just listen" He whispered back, feeling that Carly would see the funny side. After a brief silent second, she laughed.

"It's like my car all over again" She whispered, resting her hands against Lee's chest.

"Now we're even" He smiled before kissing her head. Carly smiled and kissed his lips. Those were definitely her favourite.

None of them even heard the music anymore as they stared at each other, not even sure if they could describe what they were seeing. Lee only wanted to see Carly, and she only wanted to see him. Neither of them said a word as the gazing continued. It was almost like a tactical game, with neither of them wanting to make the next move, but Carly couldn't take it anymore. She threw her arms around Lee's neck and kissed him with more passion than she'd ever kissed anyone before. Lee pulled her in close again before lifting her off her feet so she could wrap her legs around him. He couldn't stop kissing her as he carried her off to his bedroom, only stopping to kick the door closed behind him.
