Chapter 21

Eventually they had gotten Doctor Davis cleaned up and sent home in a taxi that they prayed would get him home before he decided to be sick again, leaving Lee and Carly out by themselves. They were slightly concerned that the barman wanted to kill them after the mess that Phil had made so they'd decided to head off somewhere else. Leaving the bar, they were met with an incredibly cold wind, so they walked at a brisk pace to find the first place they could that would serve them a drink.

"I can't believe the mess he was in" Lee said, seeing his breath in the cold air as he did. He was thankful he had a thick jacket with him.

"Fucking Phil" Carly giggled.

Lee looked at her in surprise. He'd never heard her say that before. She was definitely learning!

The first bar that they came across looked like it was incredibly busy but they decided that it was too cold to stat outside any longer. They entered and pushed through the herd to get to the bar.

"We are literally the oldest people in here" Lee commented as he looked around at the other patrons.

It was quite a small place with red and blue lights constantly flashing. It was so bad that Lee was prepare to dive into action if someone happened to have an epileptic fit. It definitely wasn't the type of place he'd choose to go to because he had to shout loudly to be heard. There was a constant "Thump thump thump" sound blaring around the room which he assumed was supposed to be music. To Lee though, it just sounded like someone was being repeatedly beaten by a heavy, blunt object. Apparently he didn't look like the type of person who would frequent this place either as he noticed that almost all eyes were on him and Carly.

"Does that really bother you? Come on, let's just get a drink" Carly said.

They had to wait for around five minutes before a young man who couldn't have been a day over 22 came over to serve them.

"Hey guys!" He said with a wide smile.

"Jesus, he's even happier than you" Lee whispered to Carly. Her way of response was to elbow him in the ribs before speaking to the bar-boy.

"Can we just have two beers please?" She yelled, also struggling to be heard. The man child went off to get them two bottles.

"This is literally the worst place I've ever been in my life" Lee laughed, this time blocking Carly's elbow from assaulting him.

"Will you lighten up? Just get loose! Have fun! You know what that is right? Look, I have an idea" Carly pointed to the far end of the bar where a group of young girls were drinking some sort of shot.

"Don't even think about it!" Lee warned, knowing full well that she wasn't going to listen to him.

The guy returned with their beers and Carly asked him what the girls were drinking. After looking over he informed her that it was something called a Comatose.

"It's got whisky, vodka and tequila in it" He explained.

"That sounds disgusting. We'll have two please!" Carly chirped.

"A good choice! Apparently it's so strong that it literally sends people into a coma!" The barman said as he began pouring the drinks.

"I'm quite certain that that has never happened" Lee corrected him.

"No really! Apparently it automatically gives you a brain haemorrhage!" The kid wouldn't let up"

"That's not even the same thing" Lee put his head in his hands. This was why he didn't go to places like this.

"I think I would know dude. I'm a barman"

"I'm a doctor! Why the hell would you sell that shit anyway!?" A now exasperated Lee said.

Carly had watched the whole exchange take place in a fit of uncontrollable laughter. She paid for the drinks and led Lee away before it got so heated that they'd need to see the boy at their workplace. They found a table and sat down to drink. They seemed to be the only people in the building sitting; everyone else was either standing by the bar or dancing in the alleged dance floor in the middle of the room.

"Is this what Nurse Oliver does back home? Drink fictionally unstable shots and frequent places where you only get in with spots on your face?" He asked. Really he was just stalling so he didn't need to drink the vile looking concoction that sat in front of him.

"Not exactly. But we're here now so let's make the most of it huh?" She replied, holding her glass up in the air. Lee nodded and clinked his glass against hers before they both took the plunge and finished it all at once. Initially it didn't taste that bad. But after a couple of seconds their throats suddenly began to burn as if a volcanic eruption had just happened from inside them.

"Holy shit!" Lee gasped, grabbing his beer and quickly taking a drink to cool his throat down.

"That was definitely a bad choice" Carly admitted, her face turned into a sickened grimace.

Of course, the way that alcohol works is that even though you know you are making a bad choice, you still do it anyway. That was the problem that these two now faced as they had about four more of the poison. Carly claimed that the reason was because they were finally going to have some fun. Lee just wanted to prove to the idiot behind the bar that he was right.

Eventually though, they decided that if they continued to do this then, even though they wouldn't end up with a brain haemorrhage, they'd certainly be suffering from something else. They decided to call it a night and phoned for a taxi straight away so that they wouldn't have to stay in the cold longer than they had to. It arrived fairly quickly and they were on their way home before they knew it.

"I think Ben would've been proud of us" Lee said with a smile as he thought about the old man again.

"I hope so, because I don't think I could have given much more there!" Carly nodded.

They sat in silence and watched the city as it buzzed with people and cars and bright lights coming out of seemingly every building. It was Friday night and it seemed like the whole of Pittsburgh had come out to party.

Lee didn't want to admit it but he was actually feeling like he'd missed this type of night. He had obviously been out a couple of times lately but he hadn't had a proper all night party in a long time. Part of that was because he was older now and thought he would feel like a bit of an outsider, like he'd done tonight. But mostly it was seeing the amount of smiling faces that they were passing. These people didn't have a care in the world, or if they did, they had pushed it all to the back of their minds while they focussed all their energy on just enjoying himself. He envied that about them.

"You know what? I actually had a good time tonight. Thanks" He said, turning to face Carly. She just smiled back at him.

As usual, they reached Cary's apartment first. The taxi stopped and she hesitated.

"You ok?" Lee asked, noticing that she was lingering. "You're not going to do a Phil and start blowing chunks are you?" He joked.

The driver of the taxi swung round and stared at them in terror. He looked as if someone had just run into his bathroom with a toaster as he relaxed in the bath.

"Relax! I'm not going to!" Carly laughed at the man who now exhaled deeply. "I was thinking, do you want to come up this time? I have more beer" She shrugged. Every voice in Lee's head told him to say no. That going home to bed would be the best idea but just like earlier on, he ignored his usual idea of common sense and joined Carly in her apartment.
