Chapter 18
Lee felt pretty bad for blowing Carly off the way he did but he was trying to prove a point. If people saw that not even she could get through to him then maybe they'd give up on this ridiculous notion that her presence alone suddenly transformed him into this Doctor Happy character. It sounded like a really lame superhero and Lee just wanted to be the villain.
However, it didn't take him long to realise that he wouldn't need to try very hard to be in a bad mood. His first job in the afternoon was to check on a seventeen year old child who had been found in the street the night before. It turned out that he'd overdosed on heroin and almost didn't make it. Only quick reactions by the nurses on duty at the time and several injections of Naloxone had stabilised the boy.
These were Lee's least favourite patients. Kids who were just throwing their lives away because they thought they ran into a little bit f trouble. They had no idea that when they grew up, things were going to get a lot tougher and all the problems that they thought they were having now, weren't going to mean a thing in a couple of years. He couldn't see what was so bad about being a teenager anyway. This kid had a home, after hearing what had happened (Phil had called them) they had come straight to his bedside. They told the nurse that he was a popular kid and that he was doing quite well in school. Lee realised that they could have been lying, or just not really known anything about what was really going on in their son's life, but still.
When he was a teenager he had literally no friends. He'd had no dad for the most important years of his teenage life and lived with a mother who struggled to pay the bills every month. Those were real problems but he'd turned out just fine, if not better. Obviously, he was going to do everything he could for the boy but he really wanted to give him a piece of his mind.
Many of his colleagues continued to tell people that patients could still hear people talking to them, even if they were unconscious. Lee personally didn't believe that, because there was no kind of scientific proof. But this time he had to resist the temptation to tell the boy how inconsiderate he was being. Maybe it would subconsciously force him to make better life choices. Perhaps it was just the massive cynic inside him, but he just couldn't fathom how someone could screw up their life so bad after such a short period of time. It had taken him way longer than that!
Once he was satisfied that the boy wasn't going to stop breathing any time soon, he left his room and tended to his other patients.
Once his shift was finally over, Lee creeped out of the hospital with as little fuss as possible. He was almost at the bus stop when he heard Carly crying out his name from behind him.
"Are you stalking me, Nurse Oliver?" He asked, clearly irritated.
"Let me give you a ride home" She said, shaking a set of keys in the air, "When I went home I had to put the Mondeo back to the rental company so you can check out my new set of wheels!" She grinned. She had decided to put her car back to the rental company instead of paying for it whilst she was back home and not using it. Plus she loved getting new things so it really did seem like a good idea.
Lee wasn't impressed though. "I'm not really a car guy, but thank you for offering".
"Come on! What's the point in paying for a bus journey when you can get a free lift home and a shorter journey? Plus, I feel like we should catch up" She almost whispered the last sentence out of nervousness.
"There's nothing to catch up on. I've been up to literally the same as always, and I personally don't really want to know what's happening in your personal life". Lee sat down on the bench by the stop and folded his arms like a child in a mood.
"We don't have to talk then. We can just sit and drive" Carly suggested.
Figuring she wasn't going to take no for an answer, Lee surrendered and got up.
"Yay!" Carly jumped for joy before leading him to her new car.
This one was a blue Mercedes, which Lee had to admit was pretty cool. It was a huge step up from the Mondeo and he hoped that a better car would lead her to be a better driver. By the time they got to his apartment he was still unable to decide. At least they had stuck to the no talking rule.
The very second that the car stopped, Lee thanked her and opened the door.
"Hey wait! I have to give you something!" Carly grabbed a hold of his arm to stop him leaving. Lee looked at where she was holding him and then looked into her eyes. It wasn't the way he looked at her in Carly's dream. Sensing his rage, Carly let go and began searching in her handbag before unveiling the gift that she had bought for him while she was back home.
"What the fuck is this?" Lee asked as she handed it to him.
"Language please" She said, rolling her eyes. She'd had enough of that with the 4 old men earlier. "It's your Christmas present"
"It's the middle of January"
"I know that! But we were so rushed off our feet at work over Christmas and then there was all that stuff with your mom so I figured that later was better than never".
Lee hid a smile before getting back into character. "I didn't get you anything" He grunted.
"Don't worry I was one hundred and fifty million per cent sure that you wouldn't" Carly laughed. Just open it".
Lee sighed but did as he was told. If he didn't know any better, he'd say he was being bullied here. He un-wrapped the box and found a CD inside. He looked at it before laughing.
"Heart. The greatest hits. Aren't you hilarious?" He said, remembering their first awkward car journey as she'd been blaring the very artist that he now held in his hands.
"There's no way that I'm letting you away with not liking them so this is your homework" She said.
"So you want me to just sit in my bed alone, listening to this, thinking about the man that got away?" Lee grinned sarcastically.
"Exactly!"
Lee thanked her again, sounding very sincere as he did so. He finally climbed out of the car and headed up to his apartment and thought about putting the CD on straight away. For about ten seconds. Instead, he threw it into one of his kitchen drawers and abandoned it.
