Chapter 11
The next day, Lee and Carly didn't cross paths at all after they arrived at the hospital. There had been yet another car crash (most likely due to the severe weather) and it took up all of both their time. Luckily for everyone involved, it was nowhere near as bad as the one the other week and no one was in any danger.
He would never admit it, but for the first time in who knew how long, Lee was tired. He found himself not wanting to be at work, which was rare enough, but he didn't even want to rest at home. He felt as though all the extra shifts he'd been taking on had finally caught up with him and he was in serious need of some new scenery. He tended to his final patient and retreated back to his office.
He filled out all the important paperwork and was all set to go home. There was just one problem. He really couldn't be bothered. Lee couldn't remember the last time he felt this way. He briefly wondered what most people did when they were in this situation and before he knew it he was looking through various sites on the internet on the laptop that someone had left on his desk, looking up anything he could think of that would interest him. He had no idea how anyone could do this on a regular basis.
At the end of her shift, Carly knocked on Lee's office door and entered. She immediately saw how dishevelled he looked. His hair wasn't geld as neatly as it normally was, he was in need of a shave again and he had bags the size of apples under his eyes.
"Hey" He said to her as he lazily looked up at her.
"My god you look awful" She gasped as she sat down.
"No wonder you're single" Lee muttered.
"I don't mean it like that. You look exhausted. Are you alright?" She asked.
"I'm ok" He lied. "Just need to get some sleep"
"You need to take time off. Even just a day or two. It'll do you the world of good. Come on, you've earned it" She smiled. This time Lee lifted his head fully.
"They need me here" He argued.
"There are other doctors here, Lee"
"But none of them are as good as me" He replied with a wry smile. Carly didn't know whether he was joking or not. She decided to reply with her own joke either way.
"No wonder you're single" She grinned as she used his own phrase against him.
"Touché" He laughed. Only then did Carly notice that Lee's laptop screen wasn't showing anything hospital related.
"What you looking at?" She asked, turning the screen round before Lee could stop her. "Steelers games?" She asked in surprise.
"Yeah. They are playing in San Diego this weekend and this guy here is selling his ticket" Lee explained.
"You should totally go! It'll get you away from this weather for a while!" Carly said excitedly.
"For two days. If that" Lee pointed out.
"It's better than nothing"
Lee thought about it for a while. Maybe Carly was right. Maybe he did need to take a break. It would probably help him get his focus back and at the very least stop him from looking up idiotic videos on YouTube. He had watched a few already today and really couldn't see the appeal.
"Alright I'll do it" He sighed as Carly appeared to jump for joy. "But only because I want to, not because you told me too" He quickly added.
"Whatever you say Doctor" Carly gave a mock salute as she stood and headed for the door.
"Where you going now?" He found himself asking, although he couldn't figure why.
"Home. Unlike you, there's only so much of this place I can take!"
"What about my ride?" Lee asked with a smile.
"Hurry up then" Carly smiled back. She now finally felt as though she'd made a friend in Lee. Although he probably wasn't the best guy to become friends with, it was still something. She'd been living in Pittsburgh now for a few months and she still only knew her neighbours and people from the hospital. She used to think she was quite outgoing but now she was starting to doubt that.
Lee turned off his laptop and grabbed his coat before hurrying out the door after Carly. He didn't want to wait for a bus in this weather. At least, that's what he was telling himself anyway.
As soon as Carly dropped him off at his home, Lee quickly booted up his laptop and checked that the game tickets were still available. Lucky for him they hadn't been sold in the last thirty minutes so he bought one and then purchased a return plane ticket to San Diego and a hotel room for the weekend. The joys of online shopping. He then called Lou and told him he'd be unavailable for the next couple of days, much to the annoyance of his boss. Once again though, Lou couldn't really complain due to Lee's countless hours of overtime. Lee's next step was to text Carly and tell her that he wouldn't need her to drive him for the next few days, as she'd demanded he do when she drove him home. She replied with another text involving a smiley face.
When he laid his head down on his pillow that night, Lee realised that he was happy for the first time in a while. He hadn't realised how much he wanted a day off until he knew he was getting one. Not only that, but he was now going to a football game for the first time in almost five years. He used to go every week in his early teens but once he started university he realised that he would have to make a few sacrifices before he could succeed. Football had been one of them.
The Pittsburgh Steelers were currently on quite a good run at the moment so the prospect of a game against the San Diego Chargers (who were having the exact opposite success) was something he really found appealing. Surely his team were guaranteed a win? Plus, as Carly pointed out, the Californian weather would be a huge improvement on the current blizzard that he woke up to every day in Pennsylvania.
He closed his eyes and found sleep immediately. When he awoke he packed a small bag and called a taxi to take him to the airport. His journey had begun.
