3. She Came in Through the Bathroom Window
"Did he see us?" Minnie asked panic stricken after we successfully made it to the front of the crowded club ducking our heads in hopes he wouldn't spot us and murder me for having snuck out here. I knew I should've listened to that stupid nagging feeling.
"No, I don't think so." I whispered looking around frantically in paranoia. She nodded and let out a relieved sigh. The band who was playing had just finished meaning that the next group were up; the Beatles.
My eyes wandered over to the mop top headed boys in scruffy leather clothing on stage as they prepared for their set which was only moments away. When my eyes landed on the drummer who I believed to go by the name Pete Best, I was slightly taken aback that he had not the same hairstyle the other band members had, but an Elvis like hairdo most boys in Liverpool sported. It was odd considering most bands tried their best to all have one clean unified look.
"Macca, quit messin' with the bloody amps so we get get started!" I watched amusedly as the guitarist John Lennon hissed annoyedly at the bassist Paul McCartney as Paul squatted down beside the amp fixing the cords. Paul looked at John with a sour look on his face and nodded getting up and slowly walking over to the microphone.
When my eyes finally made it to the lead guitarist George Harrison I noticed that his focus was in the general direction of Minnie and I making me tense up with butterflies erupting in my stomach. I examined his carved cheekbones and cute brown eyes with my heart fluttering. He was so handsome and mysterious, I wondered how I'd never noticed him or any of the other boys around before, I needed to get out of the house more often.
"Oh my god!" Minnie exclaimed. "He's got his eyes on you ye' know." She spoke happily biting her lip in pure crazed fan mode as she gripped tightly into my arm cutting off my circulation.
"Which one?" I played dumb shaking her hands off my arm hoping to regain the feeling in it. She shot me a dirty look knowing I knew exactly which one.
"Oh, him?" I looked back to George who quickly looked away blushing as my gaze meet his. "No, he's not." I brushed off the sense of false hope she was trying to inject me with ignoring the holes she was burning in the side of my head with her glare. I looked back behind us once more in paranoia my uncle had spotted us, I just couldn't figure out what interest he had in coming here.
"Hello, we are the Beatles," Paul spoke making my attention shift back to the stage quickly hearing the crowd roar with excitement. "And the first number we'd like to play tonight is Kansas City." He exclaimed with a charming smile, looking around the room full of energy hearing the crowd roar louder, waiting eagerly for them to start.
"One, two, three, faw!"John screamed and they started their set with a bang, their energy seeming to never fade as their set went on, it was if they were all pumped up on caffeine and uppers.
The way they put their hearts and souls into their entire performance payed off as they caught the attention of everyone at the club. It was as if they had the whole crowd including myself under some trance as we watched them onstage, they were really great musicians, and even their original songs had the crowd cheering. Song after song the applause only grew louder and fonder for the boys. I understood what all the commotion was about the band, I thought they had the potential to make it big. My opinion was biased however, I was a sucker for a good rock n roll band.
Every time George's eyes would wander over to us Minnie would give me a look and a nudge to the ribs but I simply rolled my eyes in response. She had too much of an over imaginative mind, I doubted someone like him would ever have any interest in someone like me.
"They were incredible!" I smiled as the boys started to exit the stage as their performance had just ended.
"Yeah, well worth getting caught." Minnie spoke sarcastically looking back for my uncle for the millionth time since they'd started.
"Look if you're that worried, we can go." I spoke condescendingly but feeling the same way myself, I couldn't help but have my mind fill up with questions. Out of all places, why was he here? And with Alistair? Was this, a date? I shuddered at the thought of it.
"Oh, not yet." She bit her lip suddenly forgetting her previously anxious state pointing at the Beatles who appeared near the other side of the stage with girls immediately flocking their way like moths to a flame. I watched Minnie swoon over them and I scoffed shaking my head, she was just like the rest of the girls when she saw them. I couldn't deny that they were all attractive and great musicians, but I wasn't going to throw myself at anyone, surprisingly I had some morals.
"Well I hope you enjoy rejection if you plan on talking to them, they all have girls under their arms already." I laughed as Minnie shifted around to get a better look at them.
"Not George." She smirked at me making my head snap over to see the lead guitarist seeming too preoccupied with looking around the room searching for something to realize all the girls shamelessly throwing themselves the four of them. I suddenly saw out of the corner of my eye my uncle start to walk to the front through the crowd to where the boys were standing. My eyes immediately widened in terror. I cussed underneath my breath with a growing pit in my stomach. We weren't very hidden so if he were to look over he would immediately spot us making leaving suddenly sound very tempting.
"Never mind, we're out of here." Minnie grabbed my hand and began to drag me away rather harshly. I watched curiously as my uncle Brian and Alistair approached the front to the boys. I looked at the Beatles and saw George was staring directly at me, a defeated look etched on his face as I was getting dragged further and further away from them.
I turned around and sprinted through the crowd with Minnie disturbing many couples making out and teens dancing as we pushed past them hurriedly. I knew if we got caught there was no way my uncle would let me go anywhere until I was thirty five. He's very overprotective like that, and although I appreciated his constant concern for me I could handle myself, I always had.
Once we were back to the car we were both breathing heavily relieved that we had made it out safely. After a moment of being caught up in my own shaken up thoughts I spoke up.
"I'm sorry our night was cut short." I muttered disappointedly resting my head on my hand.
"Oh that's alright, at least we got to see one of Liverpool's hottest bands." She shrugged and I smiled and nodded in agreement.
"Have we seen them all now?" I asked trying to remember if we'd forgotten one of the bands on the list.
"Yeah, I say we need to swing by another Rory Storm and the Hurricanes show." She bit her lip daydreaming making me start to giggle.
"If you shout "Rory get me pregnant" once more I think the poor lad might just get a restraining order on ye'." I laughed shaking my head causing her to blush.
"Alright, alright, let's get-" Minnie said stopping suddenly when a car zoomed by on the road. My uncles car. I gasped seeing the license plate feeling my heart start hammering against my rib cage, threatening to jump out of my chest.
"I-I know a shortcut." Minnie spoke frantically. I nodded wide eyed in absolute disbelief, I was going to get caught. Minnie struggled to start the car up, waisting precious time until she was finally able to get out on the road to start speeding away to my house.
"It's been a good run Min." I spoke emotionlessly knowing this was the day I was finally going to get shipped off to a boarding school somewhere far away.
"Don't say that. We've come too far to give up now!" She spoke tensely, sharply turning a corner making me jerk harshly to the side. We drove in an anxious silence until we finally pulled up to my house seeing my uncle had just parked. We watched him from across the street as he walked to the front door and locked it behind him, sealing my fate.
"NO!" Minnie screamed. I gasped and looked at her suddenly having an idea that would either save me or ensure certain death.
"We leave the upstairs bathroom window open." I said jumping out of the car quickly. I watched her wide eyes as I waved her off and ran to the side of the house where vines crept all the way up to the bathroom window.
I cursed myself for having such scrawny arms as I struggled to pull myself up to the upstairs window, almost slipping and falling to my death several times. My hands were blistered and bleeding by the time I reached the window, but if I could pull this off it would all be worth it.
"Alright. Now through the window." I whispered to myself and ungracefully shimmied myself through the petite window opening attempting to make as little noise as possible. Once I was in, I quietly opened the door seeing that my uncle hadn't come upstairs yet, the hallways still dark.
I smiled to myself victoriously when suddenly the thumping noise of footsteps came up the stairs. I bolted for dear life to my room, throwing myself underneath the covers of my bed, messing up my hair and quickly attempting to wipe off my makeup to make it seem like I hadn't dressed myself up. I felt very uncomfortable in bed with a dress, jacket and shoes on but I couldn't risk my uncle seeing me in them, so I kept myself under the covers, praying I had gotten away with it.
I heard my door creek open and footsteps nearing the side of my bed. I shut my eyes tightly terrified that would somehow know I hadn't been sleeping. I could feel his presence next to me and I prayed the thumping in my chest wasn't audible for it would give everything away. He leaned down and planted a kiss on my forehead before turning around and walking back out of the room much to my relief. When the door shut, I let out a heavy sigh I had been holding in. That was too close, I thought to myself brushing away the nervous sweat I had broken into from my forehead.
