26. Do You Want to Know a Secret?
"Lennon you piece of shite!" I pushed him slightly gritting my teeth, making him laugh at me knowingly.
"What the hell did you give me?" I asked as we walked behind the rest of them out of the Top Ten Club.
"Just an upper, isn't your headache gone?" He smiled toothily resembling a child, making me roll my eyes.
"Just an upper." I muttered to myself annoyedly fidgeting with my hands anxiously.
"You two alright?" My uncle asked looking back at the two of us obviously overhearing our bickering.
"We're just peachy." John reassured him with a grand smile.
We entered into the taxis and I ended up sitting between George and my uncle in the backseat of one of them. I tried not to fidget around, desperately clinging my hands into my knees to keep them from bouncing. I felt absolutely insane being both scared and joyous at the same time, my head was spinning as my mind raced through thoughts.
"Can you meet me in the hallway in thirty minutes?" George asked me quietly one the taxi pulled up to the hotel. I nodded, hoping this had to do with what he wanted to tell me earlier, I was very curious what he could possibly have to say that would make him so nervous.
"Yeah." I smiled as we got out of the car.
John, Paul and Pete were waiting on the sidewalk, although were almost invisible through the dark night.
"What time is it John?" I overheard Paul ask John.
"Two." John said squinting at his watch, obviously in need of his glasses.
"Looks like I'm not getting any sleep tonight." Pete said looking restless, unable to stand in place from having taken the pill John had been handing out like candy.
John stood staring hungrily at some pretty girls that had just passed, looking them up and down with a wild grin.
"Neither am I." John smirked at Pete before going to catch up with the two girls who were by then well passed us.
"Wh-" My uncle huffed watching as John slipped his arm around one of the girls as they walked away.
"He'll be back in the morning. He's like a stray dog. You keep feeding him, he keeps coming back home." Paul assured Brian making me laugh at the comparison between John and a dog. It really couldn't be any more perfect. My uncle hummed in annoyance.
I was smiling although I did feel a large pang of guilt for Cynthia, John had must've really disregarded his thoughts about her, one of these days he would need to wise up and stop fooling around with other girls. Don't get me wrong, I loved John like a brother but the way he treated girls was not very gentlemen like at all.
The boys grabbed their guitars, and John's, and we walked into the hotel once again, seeing the man at the front desk was asleep. George nonchalantly walked up to the counter, and emptied the candy dish on the corner of the desk into his jacket pocket.
"You've got children to feed do you George?" Paul asked snickering with Pete. George smiled in a child like manner as he shoved a piece of candy in his mouth.
"I'm managing four five year olds." My uncle muttered to himself for what seemed to be the hundredth time in amazement of the boy's behaviours. I giggled as we continued on our way upstairs, still taking the stairway after a whole week, no one put a single grain of trust into the rusty old elevator.
Once we had gotten into our rooms and prepared for bed, I laid down on the uncomfortable mattress without a tired bone in my body, still fully clothed in black jeans, a pink button up shirt and white jacket.
"You sleeping in your clothes?" My uncle asked coming out of the bathroom in his blue silk pyjamas. I nodded closing my eyes acting tired, my hand nonstop tapping on my other as they laid on my stomach.
"Well Goodnight love, sleep in tomorrow, we have another long night ahead of us." My uncle sighed climbing into bed tiredly.
"Goodnight Bri." I smiled warmly as he turned off the lamp.
I waited impatiently for him to start snoring lightly and stood up, careful not to make a sound although the bed made a large squeaking noise, much to my dismay. I winced and continued to tiptoe my way to the door, slipping on some flats and stepping into the hallway, seeing George leaning against the corridor wall, playing around with an acoustic guitar he had strapped around him.
When I had gotten out safely, making sure I had a key to get back in, George stepped off the wall delightedly and removed the guitar from around him, clutching the neck of his guitar tightly in his hand. He had his leather jacket over his suit, his hair slightly disheveled and his eyes seemed tired, much more sober than the other boys eyes' looked maybe he hadn't taken what John gave to me. Although my heart was racing quickly because of the pill, I didn't need it to have my heart race around George, he made me feel like I was on top of the world when we were together.
"Hello." My lips tugged upwards watching him wipe his sweaty hand on his jacket.
He grinned at me affectionately, leaning in and placing a gentle kiss on my cheek. He pulled me by the hand back to the stairwell of the hotel, passing an intimidating gang of men, making my heart pound for yet another reason.
"Where are we going?" I asked simply running my thumb along his hand as we rushed down the steps.
"It's a secret." He looked back at me with a wide grin. I knew I could feel safe with George, but something just seemed odd today, I really wasn't sure what he was going to say or where we were going.
He brought me outside into the cold wintery air as a light snowfall was begging, making a chill run down my spine. My hair began to blow in my face as I stopped at looked up at George, holding his arms so he was facing me.
He still clutched onto his guitar, maybe he was just going to play me a song, I thought to myself. My mind started to wander and I started to become insecure as I stared into George's innocent brown eyes that glimmered in the moonlight.
"George, before we go any further, you know I love you right?" I spoke with a brooding expression taking over my features.
"Of course." He furrowed his eyebrows in confusion like he didn't understand why I felt the need to say it in the moment.
"George, I mean really love you. I never knew what love was until I met you, and well, you mean the world to me." I shook my head keeping my eyes locked with his. His expression softened and a bright smile tugged his lips upward.
It was true what I had said. The way he made me feel was so different than anything I felt before, I knew I could trust him with anything, he was the love of my life.
He leaned in and pulled me into his chest with his strong hands. We shared a passionate kiss, snowflakes falling around us as the street lights illuminating the space around us. I held onto the moment for as long as I could until we parted breathlessly.
"I really love you too." George smiled goofily at me. The moment was cut short by the question circulating in my head over and over again.
"Where are we going?" I asked excitedly, feeling the upper making my attention span limited and my excitement heightened.
"I'll tell you when we get there." George took my hand in his free hand as we began to walk to the destination, I had been slightly afraid Brian would wake up and find me gone, but at the same time I was so contented to be walking alongside George, there was an indescribable high of being around him, he was an absolute sweetheart.
It was about a five minute walk, where we found ourselves looking out on the water on a bench in a park. We watched the moonlight glistening on the water for awhile, until George cleared his throat nervously.
"I finished that song," he spoke up, keeping his eyes on the water.
"The one I played at NEMS." He looked over at me slowly. He grinned, examining my features, anxiously awaiting my reaction.
"That's great Geo," I smiled warmly, knowing now this is what he was doing with his guitar.
"Can I hear it?" I asked hopefully, longing to hear the beautiful tune once more that he had played for me once before. His expression brightened. He nodded and placed the guitar he had put beside the bench on his lap. He quickly did a little tuning before I heard the sweet tune of his song once again.
"Listen,
Do you want to know a secret?
Do you promise not to tell?, Ooh oh, oh.
Closer,
Let me whisper in your ear,
Say the words you long to hear,
I'm in love with you.
Listen,
Do you want to know a secret,
Do you promise not to tell, whoa oh, oh.
Closer,
Let me whisper in your ear,
Say the words you long to hear,
I'm in love with you, Ooh oh oh.
I've known the secret for a week or two,
Nobody knows, just we two.
Listen,
Do you want to know a secret?
Do you promise not to tell? Ooh oh, oh.
Closer,
Let me whisper in your ear,
Say the words you long to hear,
I'm in love with you.
Ooh oh oh, Ooh oh oh"
I listened patiently, being absolutely blown away by the song, I was completely speechless as I sat there in awe. He put his guitar down to the side slowly, then looked at me nervously, unsure if I would like the song he had just put his heart and soul into playing.
"That was beautiful George." I smiled nearly being brought to tears that he had made a song just for me. His shoulders relaxed, looking at me with loving eyes. He reached for his jacket pocket, sinking his hand inside.
"I-I know this is daft of me, but I wanted to make a promise to you." He spoke pulling out a small pouch from his pocket. I stayed quiet, observing his every move intently.
"I want to promise you I'll be true, no matter how far apart we are." He opened the pouch and pulled out a small silver band. My jaw dropped in shock.
"It's a promise ring, until I can turn it into an engagement ring." He looked at me with an undertone of fear in his warm brown eyes.
I smiled, a tear escaping my eye as I gave him my hand to slip the promise ring on.
"I want to marry you someday Poppy." His vulnerability shining through as he spoke those words. My lip quivered slightly as I opened my mouth to speak.
"You're my everything, George Harrison." I confessed lovingly before his lips gently crashed onto mine.
No matter where George and I were, from that day on it was certain we'd always find our way back to each other.
