His Butler, Breaking Hearts

Yelling.

Why is it always something in this bloody household? It was the young master's scream that woke you up.

'Sebastian will get him.'

You stopped dragging your clothes on, looking at the mirror running your hands through your hair. 'Since when am I so cold towards children? Granted this one is different... still odd.'

With only your black stockings on and an unbuttoned white cotton shirt. You grabbed a robe and tied the string so it won't slip and went upstairs as quickly as possible to the young lords room. Ah... Agni had woken him up. He was cradled like a baby in Agni's arms and throwing a fit like a baby. "Hold on a moment. Why are you in my room?!" He was pushing Agni's face away trying to separate himself from him. Sebastian was standing at the door enjoying the scene while politely trying to tell him to put the young lord down.

"In your bathrobe?" Sebastian looked at you with an eyebrow raised. "SEBASTIANNNNN!!!"

"Can you three please try to remember you're in front of guests. What is it?" He looked irritated. You were in your bathrobe and stockings without shoes in front of guests and now these three making a racket in the morning.

"It's so weird. The food, the yard, the clothes!!!"

"What about it?" you noticed Agni had walked off with the young master still in his grip. "Come see Y/n, we don't have work today." They led you out to the yard to see that the linens were done, and the garden was trimmed to perfection, not a weed in sight. Finally, breakfast was made. "It was presumptuous but I prepared all this early this morning." Agni gave a bright smile. "Oh, you shouldn't have like I said you're a guest." Agni put his hand up to stop Sebastian from talking further. "Oh, but it's nothing. The prince is exempt but I am a mere butler. So the least I can do is lend the hard-working Sebastian a hand." Sebastian turned to Mey-rin, Bard, and Finny. "Maybe the three of you can take a page from his book." Stifling your laugh he looked at you, "I know you're not laughing with the choice of wardrobe you have on and the time you chose to wake up." You laughed nervously after being exposed like that. "Yeah yeah I'll go change."

~

"GET OUT!!!"

Prince Soma and Agni were tossed from the room you were about to enter. "Oh Miss Y/n, you have found a better change of clothes." Turning red in the face you cleared your throat. "And you've managed to make him throw you out, no indecency needed." You smirked at them. "Haha, I like your humour girl. Tell me, is this all the English do? Lessons on lessons. Does he even have time to play at all?"

"He is the Earl of Phantomhive, his time rarely warrants for childish things... I'm sure he gets his enjoyment from other things."

"A kid like that shouldn't be worried about all these things, playing the violin, art, and inspecting things for factories. He should be doing whatever he wants." the Prince said, he obviously didn't get why the young lord had to do all those things. But it was nice to have someone besides the Lady Elizabeth wanting him to take a break.

The door opened revealing Sebastian allowing the young lord to pass to go to his next lesson. "Oh Y/n, look at some of the toys there and tell me what you think of the designs. You have a way of knowing what children like."

"My Lord." Walking inside you saw a few stuffed animals and Tanaka. "Ho ho ho." Smiling at him you looked away at the toys. Bitter Rabbit and some other toys had a new design. They looked better, more modern, and the colours were better than the last selection of toys. Picking up Bitter Rabbit you inspected it, it was a bit firmer than the last model and the eyes for all the toys were replaced with the new "safety eyes". They looked like shiny black beads, like actual eyes glinting in the light. Gathering details for your opinion you made your way to the tutor's room. Sebastian refused to let him use the drawing-room, too many breakable things that would cause him extra work. You opened the door to see the young lord on his knees gripping his arm like it was broken and Agni at his side apologizing. "You protected your master well Agni. See Ciel, Agni is my servant an extension of myself." A triumphant smile was on his face. Walking towards the young lords' fallen épée you picked it up and tossed it to Sebastian before turning to the Prince. "Then you wouldn't mind his extension taking his place."

"Oh young master, why ever did you have to provoke the bratty little Prince?" his white glove disappeared into his tailcoat dragging out his pocket watch, "Besides we're a full ten minutes behind schedule." Prince Soma gave Agni his épée. "The time. That's what you care about." Standing up with your help he let go of you. "I order you Sebastian, shut the brat's mouth now!" he gritted his teeth angrily.

"Yes, my lord," his smirk gracing his lips. 'Oh he gets to talk out of turn but I have to watch how I answer guests.' You rolled your eyes at the thought. Damn butler.

Mr. Lau stood in between Agni and Sebastian, "And...begin!" While they fought you turned your attention to the young lords arm, massaging it till you heard a crack. "Better?" He didn't answer verbally, too fixated on the fight he nodded his head yes. Looking back you saw they were both evenly matched. Impossible, the épées met tip to tip and pushed with such a force they bent and snapped in half. "I guess that's match then. I have to prepare for dinner." The young lord made his way over to Sebastian along with you. "What happened? Agni is no ordinary human, don't tell me he's another..." he whispered to Sebastian. "He is extraordinary but he's human. Now my lord, I must excuse myself, I am sorry." he bowed and walked off towards the kitchen. "Right, what did you think of the toys Y/n?" the young lord turned to you.

"For starters, it's better visually and theoretically in structure. However, children are not always so keen on change. So to make drastic changes like that to something they cherish could hurt company sales. The products from before were softer more comforting, these are stiff and cold. The more vivid colours are better than before, a wise decision. I think children would prefer the changes to the eyes, it makes it more realistic and fascinating to them."

"Well I can't very well have them so droopy, they'll look used," his voice was monotone as he observed Prince Soma and Agni.

"True so use whatever materials that make the toys stiff but less of it. Not so stiff but not having Bitter Rabbit's head on his toes."

"You know I should have you be President of the Board instead of a maid here," he was impressed with your reviews. Gently laughing to be polite you thanked him. "I'm unsure if people would like the idea of a woman in such a high position." He shrugged his shoulders, "It's my company, I don't care about your gender like the rest of the nobility. Hard honest work is what I require. Besides, it's not indecent for a woman to have a brain and then have it put to work."

"Was that a compliment?" a taunting smile played with your lips embarrassing the earl. "I believe I hear Sebastian calling you," his cheeks turned red. "I'm sure," you ruffled his hair making him blush even more before stepping out and going down to the kitchen.

~

"Hey Sebastian, I just remembered. What did the young lord mean when he said what the mark will do to me?" Your ear twitched slightly and he breathed out a little. "Just like that."

"Wha- "

"I'm cooking something tasty for our guest Sebastian. Don't worry about it today." Bard came in with a frying pan in his hand interrupting your conversation. He walked over to Bard taking the frying pan out his hand. "I'll take care of the cooking today." Bard looked at you obviously offended. "You do have a tendency to demolish the kitchen Bard, maybe not today while there are guests in the house."

Just then Agni entered the kitchen wondering if he could assist. "A little help would be nice. A cottage pie and some gooseberry sauce are needed for tonight."

"Hey, I had a dessert in mind already. Just the cake is needed. Chocolate would be fine Agni."

"As you wish Miss Y/n," he smiled brightly at you. "No need to call me "Miss", Agni."

"I AM THE CHEF HERE YOU KNOW!" Bard yelled to both you and Sebastian. "HEY DID YOU HEAR ME?!" his voice cracked when Sebastian walked away, he grabbed your arm pulling you into the smaller kitchen.

"So?"

"You'll become more like me," he said plainly without even looking at you. "In essence, you'll still be human just advanced. Heightened senses, you'll be more light on your feet, small things about you will change. I'll leave certain details alone but you'll be the same overall. You'll still be human." He stopped abruptly taking your image and facial expressions in. "From the looks of it you've started to change, your little ear twitch earlier suggests you were aware Baldroy was coming even if you didn't quite know," he caressed your ear with his finger making it hot from embarrassment.

"You could've said something before, don't leave me in the dark with things like that." A little agitated he kept it from you tried to remember what was nagging your mind the other night. Closing your eyes tight trying to jog your memory while Sebastian prepared the hors d'oeuvres it hit you again and you momentarily forgot the meaning of "think before you speak". "Demons can't love," you blurted out in the air to no one in particular but the other person in the room stiffened. The damage was already done, so you decided to force the issue. "Don't ignore me."

Sebastian sighed and turned to you, his handsome features expressing agony. He dreaded the moment that you would remember that minor detail. Well, here it was. "True... demons can't love."

"Then why waste your time with me? I know humans don't necessarily fall in love in such a short amount of time but you won't fall in love ever... what's the point?" You almost felt bad for him rather than yourself. Maybe being a demon isn't all as intriguing as it's revered to be. Taking a long look at you, he dropped his head and stared at the bottom of the sink, gripping the countertop. He sighed again, "Maybe this was a mistake."

Crack

That was the sound of your heart breaking. Believe it or not, you fell hard for the demon standing so miserable in front of you. No matter how little you reacted, how much you teased, how much you pretended not to care, you fell like a sinking ship going deeper and deeper till you hit the bottom. Yet he couldn't even muster an "I tolerate you." Not even a fight or a little white lie. No, demons only crave one thing from humans; their soul. That's all they understand. You couldn't get that out of your head, you thought you were at least something to him, he marked you after all. Silence hung in the air, the tension although thick wasn't even noticed by you. Your chest had become tight and tears were at the brink of falling like the ocean getting ready to overcome a poorly built barrier. Walking calmly out of the room was the next best thing.

Staggering out in the hallway you breathed out letting two teardrops fall directly to the floor. "Y/n relax, you should've expected this. Relax relax..." you said trying to calm yourself.

'Damn it Sebastian'

The clicking of his shoes became apparent when he passed you, his face like the day you met him. Void of all emotion making it impossible to read him. Pulling yourself together, you headed to the main kitchen and saw everyone helping out with dinner. "Hey Y/n!! Look I'm helping with dinner just like you help Mr. Sebastian." Finny, ever so cheerful. "Y/n I haven't broken a dish at all today isn't that wonderful?" Mey-rin, the sweetest girl with a gun you'll ever meet. All of them were happy to be useful in the kitchen, best not to ruin the mood. "Oh Miss Y/n, I have finished baking the cake you asked for."

Smiling brightly you thanked Agni and reminded him not to call you "Miss". To avoid a less awkward dinner preparation, you were going to take the cake into the smaller kitchen. "Aye, careful or it might cave in," Bard said while chopping onions. "It's a cake, not a soufflé, you should know that since you boast of being the chef so much." Yep, snide remarks still there, everyone will assume you're normal.

~

That evening, Agni, you, and Sebastian were serving. Mr. Lau decided to stay to see the outcome of this situation. Agni and Prince Soma reveal that they're looking for a woman named Mina, a servant who is very important to the prince. Prince Soma then decides it's best to throw a temper tantrum like a little brat simply because the young lord couldn't see the point of looking for a mere servant, and sent the entire tea set flying into you resulting in hot tea stinging your legs because it seeped through your clothes and the cold milk was all over your shoes. You winced at the burning sensation pulling your skirt away from your legs. In short you were a ghastly mess and a bit more than angry, yet the low growl you heard was not from you. Sebastian, although stoic to anyone else, was a bit on the annoyed side. "Oh how lovely, this tea set was well suited to my master." The glint in his eye and the mere shadow of annoyance that passed over his face was enough to tell you that this wasn't about the tea set.
