Moonacre Manor was a bustle of anticipation and excitement because Loveday and Benjamin were getting married. One of the rooms in the east wing was filled with chairs for the ceremony, and the ballroom was decorated for the dance afterwards. It was soon time for Maria to get dressed because she was the maid of honor. Her hair was swept up in a loose bun, and she wore silver earrings and a delicate silver necklace with a moon-shaped pendant on it. They were presents from Loveday. Maria's gown was made of a silky pink material. It was simple with a corseted top and a flowing skirt. Miss Heliotrope allowed her to have it made without a cage in the back.
The time came for the wedding, and Maria walked in elegantly on the arm of Robin, who, it turns out, was the best man. Maria thought he looked different, but in a good way. His bowler hat was gone, revealing his curly brown hair. His feather collar was also gone. He had on a jet black tuxedo with a pink corsage in his buttonhole.
Once the ceremony was over, everyone went to the ballroom for dancing. There were many de Noirs there, and a few people from the village showed up, too. Many young men asked Maria to dance, and she was soon tired out. As she slipped out the door, the garden Robin was the only person to notice. Maria walked outside to the hedge maze behind the house. She had a lot of free time after the curse was broken and soon knew the maze forwards and backwards. Maria made her way to the middle and sat down on one of the large stone benches that surrounded a large fountain.
She was sitting there, deep on thought, when Robin crashed through one of the hedges.
"This maze is a little more confusing than it looks," he said, blushing madly. "Sorry if I'm bothering you, but I like being outside better than being inside. May I sit down?" When the girl nodded her head, Robin sat quickly down.
The only noise breaking the awkward silence that soon descended on them was the faint noise of the party in the background.
"Would you like to dance?" Robin's question startled Maria. "Or we could just sit here and act like I never asked that," He said, blushing again.
"No, we can dance. I mean, there's music and moonlight so we can dance. I would like to dance." When Maria placed her hand on his shoulder, Robin placed a hand on her waist and held her other out to the side.
As the pair danced, they chatted about what life was like before Maria came to Moonacre.
"I spent all my time on patrols around the castle or in the forest, hunting. It was quite boring."
"I lived in London. I had a couple friends, but no one very close to me. It was just Miss Heliotrope most of the time. When I came here, it was absolutely chaotic. There was an attack at the gate, the first attack in the woods, being captured by you, escaping, breaking the curse, and the wedding. It's nice to be able to slow down and enjoy myself." While she talked, Maria could feel a blush start to creep up her cheeks.
Maybe, she thought, he might actually like me. But Maria's hopes were shattered when a girl came rushing through the maze.
"Oh, Robin! I've been looking everywhere for you!" She draped herself on Robin's arm. "Where have you been? You promised me a dance earlier!" It was then the dark-haired girl noticed Maria. "Who are you?" she scoffed, "oh well, you don't matter anyway. Let's go, Robin! I want that dance now." Robin tried to give Maria an apologetic look as he was dragged away, but he could see an angry fire in her eyes. She spun around and stomped angrily to another exit.
