Chapter 13
Once they get to the door, Rowan fumbles through the 20 or so keys he has. Half of his keys were for the company and the other half were for rooms for the house. He gets the one to the front door and unlocks the door. The room opens up and modernity hits your face. You couldn't really tell anyone has been living there. Everything is glossed with black and white marble. You'd be scared to set foot in the house if it wasn't yours.
"Let's bring the stuff upstairs. I know this place is a little overboard but upstairs is a bit more relaxing. Downstairs is mostly just for guests that come over to the house. They aren't allowed upstairs except whom lives here." Toka nods thinking that Rowan must have read his mind. Rowan starts bringing the stuff upstairs still leaving Toka with his three small stuffed animals.
Rowan was correct; Upstairs is a lot more livable and cozy. It's a small living area with a dining set with a small kitchen. Down the hall are three bedrooms, a bathroom, and an office. "So, the bedroom all the way down the hall is mine. Yours is right next to mine. Across the hall from you is the bathroom. Next to the bathroom is my office and the other room is just there for anyone. Nothing in it really." Toka was following Rowan to his said room. "Alright, here is your room. Not much but within time, the more you stay here, you can decorate this however you'd like. No painting or drawing on the walls though. If you so desire, I can get a wallpaper that lets you draw with a dry-erase marker. As for painting the room, let me know and we can paint it a color together so it's less work for you."
"Thank you. I mean thank you so much," is all that Toka said.
Rowan smiled. "Don't mention it. I'll let you unpack and get settled in. How about we get a snack and watch a movie once you're done. I can bake. Unfortunately, I can't cook for the life of me."
"I can cook if you ever needed anything." Toka blurted out.
"I'll be looking forward to that. Also, cookies or brownies? I don't have any cake batter right at the moment."
Toka eyes lit up, "Uh, can I have brownies?" He started bouncing just a bit but stopped himself.
"Sure thing. I'll call out once they are ready. Okay?" Toka nodded and watched Rowan leave the room. Once he did, Toka looked around the room. It was a pastel yellow with mahogany wood lining where the roof and walls met. The floor was also mahogany wood. Both sets were glossed over. He looked at the bed and dresser that had six drawers. Also made with mahogany. There was also a small closet that was built into the wall.
He puts the suitcase on top of the bed where he opens it to find the few clothes he owned. He set the two suits he had for work in the closet first. Next, he takes out the shirts and put them into the dresser along with the couple of pants that he owns. He takes out the boxers that he has and puts them in the top dresser. Lastly, the pajamas. He totally forgot that he only owns either shorts or onesies. Thankfully he brought his shorts. He sets them on the bed with a t-shirt.
He decides not to go through the bags of his gear but he does take out the laptop and other equipment and sets it on top of the dresser.
Once he is done with everything, he goes out to Rowan who just put the brownies in the oven. "I'm done putting everything away." Toka says quietly but still startling Rowan.
"You are? The brownies just got in the oven. Would you like to watch a movie first or just talk?"
"We can just talk for a bit, if that's alright with you, sir."
"Alright. Also, while we are off work, you are allowed to call me Rowan."
"Okay, R-Rowan." It felt weird to say his boss's first name to his face. Or at all for that matter. He never really talked about his work life so he never said Rowan's name before.
"Good job." Rowan said. Toka blushed at the compliment but hid it very well.
"T-thank you."
"Come sit with me." Rowan pats a seat on the couch and Toka hesitantly sits next to him. Some of it all just kicked in. It's pretty awkward that just a few days ago or so, Toka didn't know he would be sitting next to his own boss. Not to mention in his boss's place.
"So, what's your favorite food?"
"Well, technically, I don't eat much unless it's fast food. The dish from today was the best dish I had in a long time." Toka said. Rowan had a slight frown on his face from hearing that.
"Well, you'll be eating a lot more here. I can at least cook eggs. If you ever don't feel like cooking, there is a chef downstairs that does a lot of meals. Probably why I don't know how to actually cook." He laughs at himself. Toka smiled a little bit but stopped immediately. Rowan notices this. "Why do you hid your emotions a lot?"
Toka starts fidgeting again after all day of not fidgeting. "I don't want people to see me as weak."
"You don't have to hid around me. I already know you went through a lot. It takes a lot of strength to go through what you did." Toka looks at the wall to distract himself from tearing up. He never hears these kinds of words. Not since Chris was actually nice. When? He can't really remember now. "Emotions also take a great amount to strength. You don't have to worry about showing them. I'll be honest with you, it's a lot warmer when someone shows their emotions. Rather then locking them away."
Toka kept staring at the wall when he notices Rowan getting a tissue out for Toka. He suddenly felt his face wet. He noticed that he already started crying. Taking the tissue, he wipes his eyes and wipes his nose with it. Rowan brings the small garbage can from next to the couch. "Am I allowed to touch you right now?" Toka nods his head yes and Rowan immediately hugs him. Toka hugs back and cries more. Something he has been holding in for years started to slowly drift out of his mind for now. Rowan starts rocking him back and forth out of instinct.
After Toka's crying starts dying down, Rowan slowly releases Toka from his grasp. He hands the box to Toka for him to wipe his face with. He takes it and does what was said. After he gets his face all cleaned off, he puts it all in the trash. Once everything was said and done, the timer goes off signalling it was time for the brownies to come out of the oven. "I'll be right back. The brownies still have to cool off."
Toka nods with a small sniffle coming after it. Rowan gets up and takes the brownies out of the oven. Not before taking the pot holders first. He sets it on top of the stove to let it cool off. He comes back to Toka who was curled up into a ball.
Rowan walks over to Toka and asks, "Would you like to take a nap while the brownies are cooling? I'll wake you up when they are able to be ate."
Toka looks up at Rowan and rubs his eyes. "Mhm-"
Rowan nods noticing Toka's change in behavior and tone. He goes and gets a blanket, one with dinosaurs on it. Also bought while they were out. That was a secret purchase, though. He walks back over to Toka who was struggling to keep awake and puts the blanket on him. He watches Toka curling up more into the blanket. He chuckles silently. He puts a timer on for forty five minutes. He strokes Toka's hair and whispers, "I'll get you up when it's time, little one." With that, he walks to his office and starts working on some of his work.
