DO NOT TOUCH - A short Sci-Fi story by Mr. X

The year is 2044. The month is August. The date is the 23rd. But, that wasn't when it began. 10 years ago, the government released a virus to control the population and prevent anarchy. The virus only infects those who touch another and when you're infected with the virus. It kills you. For this reason, the virus was named by many, "The Touch." Many people isolated themselves from society to prevent themselves from catching the Touch. Hell, it makes past viruses like COVID-19 look like a normal cold. But, I'm getting a-fuckin'-head of myself. I'm Jody. Jody Colby. And, I'm a redhead. And I have a pretty crappy relationship with a lot of people, especially my family. The only person I get along with is my girlfriend, Amy Angeles. But, that's a different story. Here's the story of how I screwed up and failed to get the cure for the one thing that could've ended the Touch. Yes, I tried to get the cure for the Touch, but I utterly FAILED. Here's how.

After a heated argument with my Mom, I was sent to my room and barricaded myself in it and I fell onto my bed and screamed loudly into my pillow gripping it harshly. Which is how I handle every argument with family. Childish, right? After that little episode, I put the pillow back under my head and rested on it letting out a loud sigh. I just couldn't deal with my Mom anymore. Then, I heard a knock on my window. My girlfriend, Amy, was standing there showing off her Tom & Jerry sweater to me. She knew I hated that show, but I couldn't stay mad at her cause she looked nice, especially with her alluring strawberry blonde hair. I got up from bed and quietly opened my window praying Mom doesn't here.

"Fam' giving you trouble again?" Amy asked, giving a very crooked smile. "Been there. But, not as much as you."

"Ha ha, very funny." I said with a sour look. "What do ya need, babe? I'm in the middle of gripping here."

"Just thought you should know that I've done some research on, you know, the Touch." Amy gloated. "And, I've read that there's a possible cure for it under-freaking-ground."

"Really?" I said questioningly. "How'd you find the time to do so what with your constant social media influencing?"

Amy is a social media influencer. She has many online fans she collectively refers to as "little Amy Fan-geles group."

"Very funny." Amy said, rolling her eyes. "Actually, my Fan-geles group began rumors that there was a cure underground. And, my Fan-geles group never lies."

"Let me get this straight." I said, eyeing my little girlfriend. "You think the cure for the Touch is under-flipping-ground because your fan group started those rumors??"

"Yes?" Amy said, rubbing the back of her head shyly. "As I said, my Fan-geles group never lies."

"Oh my GOOOOOOOD!" I sighed loudly falling onto my bed. "And, let me guess, you want to find this cure so you can increase your popularity as an influencer?"

"Noooo, of course not!" Amy insisted, but I know she was lying. "I wanna be able to find the cure so we can save millions and end this god forsaken virus! That and I miss making out with you before we caught the Touch."

I didn't know what to say. I hate people and the whole quarantine was one of the best things to ever happen to me. But, even I didn't think people deserved to die.

"Okay, fine." I sighed. "Let's just go..."

"Great." Amy said happily. "Let's get out of here. I know a way to get underground."

"I don't even wanna know how you managed to find it." I said.

I put on a grey hoodie and we both climbed through the window and quietly climbed down my house and ran off. We walked through my empty neighbor hood and across from it was an abandoned construction site. Around it was a large fence with a large sign in front of it that reads,

DANGER.
DO NOT ENTER.

"Jesus Christ, Amy, we can't go through here!" I exclaimed. "I'm a rebel like you, but even I don't break the damn law!"

"No one is watching us, Jody." Amy complained. "We'll be fiiiiine." She began to climb the gate and I reluctantly climbed after her. We made our way to the other side and we ran through the broken down buildings and mad our way to a large crater in the center of the site. On the corner was a ladder.

"Ready to go down this bitch?" Amy said with a cocky voice.

"I guess." I sighed. We climbed down the large crater and after a single hour, we reached the bottom. It may have been an hour but it felt much longer than that.

"Welp, we're here." Amy said with a smile on her face. "Let's go find that cure!"

"I guess..." I said, as I reluctantly tagged along. "Where are we even gonna find this son of a..."

"Halt!" A robotic voice ordered. I looked above and saw a group of figure with jetpacks landing right in front of us. They were half man, half robot. Yeah, you already knew they were cyborgs.

"Who the hell are you guys?!" I yelled. "I demand an explanation!"

"We're cyborg soldiers sent by the government." The lead cyborg in the middle said. He wore a white tux and strongly resembled Arnold Schwarzenegger. "We know what you're up to. The government knew the only cure for their virus remained in the grounds of the Earth. They sent us to destroy it and we're not gonna let two children stop us from doing so!" He held out a sharp hypodermic needle. "This needle carries blood infected with the Touch." He said. "We will us it to infect both of you to prevent you from revealing the location to the entire country."

"I highly doubt you'll be able to stop us." Amy said, pulling out a dust bomb. "Jody, run!!" She threw it at the cyborgs and the bomb exploded, covering the cyborgs in clouds of dust.

"Hey!!" The lead cyborg shouted. "Stop them!!" We dashed away from the cyborg army and we kept running and running until we were out of their sight.

"Damn it, Amy, what the hell have you gotten us into?!" I shouted with a panicky look on my face. "Now, we're gonna get killed by those stupid terminator ripoffs!!"

"Jody, shut up and look!" Amy said, pointing at something. I saw a glowing and strange red liquid inside a bottle with a weird label on it. I didn't recognize the text on the label.

"Duuuude!" Amy said, looking at me with determined eyes. "I think that's the mother-clucking cure!"

"Don't you mean motherfu-" I said before Amy cut me off.

"I think that's the cure!!" She chirped happily. "We could save millions of lives here! I'm grabbing that bi-!"

KA-POW!!!

A loud gunshot interrupted Amy. I turned to face the Cyborg leader holding a gun. He was standing in front of his cyborg army. I faced Amy and saw blood pouring from her chest. She fell to the ground close to my feet.

"A-amy?!" I cried, shivering uncontrollably. "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"

POW!!! POW!!!

The cyborg leader shot the cure and it spilled onto the ground.

"I did what I had to do." The cyborg leader sighed. "I sure hate havin' to take lives myself. But, it has to be done."

"You son of a bitch!!" I screamed at the cyborg leader. "You MURDERED my girlfriend!!" I dashed towards him, but he shot both my legs. I fell to the ground.

"I was gonna have you taken care of by injecting ya with this Touch infected blood." The cyborg leader said, as I slowly looked up. "But, I probably shouldn't waste my time with doing that to you. Maybe leaving you here to die will teach you a lesson. See you in hell." The cyborgs activated their jetpacks and flew off. I was laying on the ground next to my dead girlfriend. Yes, I was left here to die. With my girlfriend's body. I failed to get the cure. I failed humanity. As much as I hated people. And, I failed my Mom. So, I guess this is it. Goodbye, everyone.

The End.
