While Five went to raid the kitchen, Inanna slipped out of their hotel room to look for Reginald Hargreeves. She knew that she didn't owe him anything but she wanted someone to know why she had chosen to stay and he was the only person who knew that she was on the fence with her decision — as he had been the one to scramble her thoughts.
Inanna checked the courtyard first as that's where Reginald had said he would be if anyone needed him but when he wasn't there, Inanna headed to the White Buffalo Suite.
The door to the suite was cracked open, Inanna could only assume he had done it deliberately so when his children passed his room they could see the upset they had left him in by voting to stay.
Inanna knocked on the door once, announcing her presence, before pushing it open. Reginald stood up from his white couch and Inanna walked into the horribly decorated pink room, with her nose scrunched up in disgust.
"This is worse than my room. Instant headache" Inanna muttered under her breath.
"Shouldn't you be spending time with your husband?" Reginald asked.
"He's raiding the fridge" Inanna pointed over her shoulder as she walked over to the Buffalo head that hung on the wall.
Reginald nodded. "I understand why you took the easy way out, Inanna" Inanna turned to Reginald as he spoke. "I can't even begin to understand the physical pain you endured on a daily basis before you were gifted with powers like my daughter".
"You know about my powers?" Inanna's brows furrowed. She didn't want to talk about her phasing, not when she no longer had to tolerate the tearing of her cells with every breath.
Reginald nodded. "Klaus told me this morning. Magnificent. I always knew it would happen eventually. I spent years trying to understand how it is that a girl not born on the same day as my children could possess such power. It rattled my brain for years, even after I adopted Anna, I couldn't understand. I still do not" Reginald took a step towards Inanna. "If only we had the time and the resources, I could run some tests, we could find what makes your DNA different from the average human, to the DNA of my child-".
"I'm not being a hamster for you to poke and prod" Inanna shook her head as she stepped around Reginald. "I have been many things in my life, a daughter, an orphan, a wife, an assassin, a waitress-" Inanna listed them off on her fingers, forgetting the ones she didn't seem as important. "I'm not being your test subject".
"Well, it's fortunate that the vote went in your favour then, isn't it" Reginald gave Inanna a small smile which she didn't return.
Inanna shook her head as she sat down on the opposite couch to the one Reginald had been previously sat on. "I wasn't set on my decision until the words left my mouth and even if I had chosen to go, Five would have stayed, it would have been a draw and then what a coin toss to decide the future?" Inanna asked.
"You could have swayed him" Reginald argued.
Inanna narrowed her eyes. "No, I couldn't. He would-".
"That man, your husband, as stubborn and cut-throat as he may be, he has a gentle touch when it comes to you" Inanna's harsh stare softened at Reginald's words. "Like I said before, you lead him, not because he is threatened by you but because he puts his trust and his love into you before anything else... You could have saved the universe with three simple words".
"Not exactly" Inanna argued. "The only reason Anna voted to go was to see your downfall. She wouldn't have aided you in saving the world".
"And that is where your differences lie" Reginald spoke as he sat back down on the couch.
"There is only two people who can truly comment on our differences and you aren't one of them" Inanna responded. Only Five and Delaney could.
"One could assume that Number Five and Miss Delaney Thomson should know you and my daughter better than others, but from my observations there is much to be unpacked".
Inanna rolled her eyes as she crossed her arms over her chest. "The last thing I want right now is some weird psychological evaluation with my father-in-law who is technically not my father-in-law".
Reginald nodded as he rubbed his hands together. "You said you weren't set on your decision, do you care to explain the conflicting thoughts?" Reginald asked.
Inanna nodded. That was the reasons she had set out to find Reginald anyways. "You offered me an opportunity that if I was given an hour before, I might have taken. I want a good life, that is all I have ever wanted. I want my family to meet my husband because I know they would love him and he would love them, but i'm not dragging him through hell when he has told me that he's done. Five doesn't deserve that and neither do the others".
"And what about Allison?" Reginald asked. "Doesn't she deserve to see her daughter?".
Inanna stilled. "There was a vote. A fair one".
Reginald nodded. "But does she deserve to never see her loved ones again?" Reginald asked.
"If there was another way for her to get back to her-".
A knock on the suite door interrupted the conversation before Reginald could tell Inanna that there was no other way to save the universe. Luther walked into the room looking between Reginald and Inanna, with a hint of worry in his eyes and holding a bottle of wine in a tub of ice.
"Is everything okay?" Luther's question was directed at Inanna, unsure of what he had interrupted.
"Yeah" Inanna nodded. "All's good" Inanna gave Luther a tight lipped smile.
"Krug 1968" Reginald nodded his head at the wine. "Excellent year".
Luther looked from the wine to Reginald. "Yeah. One last toast with Sloane before, um..." Luther shrugged. "The ice machine was broken on our floor, so I, you know...".
Reginald hummed, with a sniffle which prompted Luther to ask if his father was okay. Inanna's brows furrowed, Reginald, although most definitely upset that he couldn't save the world, hadn't been upset to the point of crying moments before. It was an act, a ploy to grab sympathy from Luther.
"This is the failure of my life" Luther sighed. "I sit here staring at centuries wasted, all because a different me was unkind to his children" Reginald said.
"Listen, Dad" Luther sat the bottle down on a small round table. "It's not that simple, all right? You are so hard to say no to. You know that? But I had to".
"Luther, the universe is tearing itself apart" Reginald stood up as he spoke and walked over to Luther.
"Yes, I know, I know" Luther stepped passed Reginald, walking further into the room stopping in front of Inanna with his back to her. "But it's always something, you know? I lived my whole life for you. Everything you ever wanted me to do, I did. And I won't anymore" Luther shook his head.
"Nor should you" Reginald nodded. "You're a remarkable man, Luther. Despite what I put you through, I hope that you can forgive me" Luther stared at Reginald with confusion, he hadn't expected an apology, and neither had Inanna. "Will you?" Reginald asked. Reginald walked towards Luther and stopped in front of him. "Will you forgive me, son?" Reginald asked.
"Yeah" Luther mumbled. "Yeah, of course".
"Thank you" Reginald shocked both Inanna and Luther further by hugging Luther. "Thank you" Luther smiled as he hugged his father.
Reginald's eyes flickered down to Inanna who had been silent throughout their entire conversation, taking in the apology and the fake tears that Reginald shed.
"I only wish your self-actualisation could have come at a better time for the universe" Reginald said.
"I... I don't understand" Luther muttered.
The tearing of Luther's flesh and his sudden grunt of pain as Reginald Hargreeves pierced through his son's body with what Inanna could only describe as a blue tentacle, had Inanna frozen to the couch with a thumping heart beat.
Luther spluttered on his own blood as Reginald pulled away from him. "Dad..." Luther choked out.
"There's an old saying, Luther. The best way to bring a family together is at a wedding or a funeral. We tried the one. Now it's time for the other".
Reginald tore the tentacle from Luther's chest and his blood began pouring from his wound. Inanna stood up from the couch slowly, with a shaking breath and her orange eyes trained on Reginald in front of Luther.
Luther painfully looked over his shoulder to Inanna as he fell to his knees, muttering out his wife's name in a whimper.
"I know, I know" Reginald muttered. "Just as you found love. It is a terrible shame. But don't worry. I'll be sure to look after her".
Reginald lifted his arm and when Luther turned to look at him, Reginald slashed him across his chest, spraying Luther's blood into the air. Luther fell sideways onto the white rug, laying in his own blood as it began pooling around him.
Inanna gasped out Luther's name and fell to her knees next to him, taking his head in her hands as he took his last breaths and she blinked her tears away.
Inanna didn't think she had the right to cry. Not now, not when she could have saved Luther before Reginald had cut him, but as his head rolled, slipping out of her hands, Inanna couldn't stop the stray tears that escaped her eyes.
Luther and Inanna might have never seen eye to eye, literally and figuratively, but he was family and he didn't deserve the painful death he was given by his father.
"Now, Inanna Hope, do you care to rethink our deal?" Reginald asked.
Inanna tilted her head as she glanced to Reginald. "My name is Inanna Hope-Hargreeves. And no" Inanna removed her hands from Luther's face as they lit them self on fire. "I'm going to kill you instead".
Reginald stood still, unfazed by her threat as Inanna stood up and the flames ran up her arms, curling underneath her hair and over the back of her neck.
Inanna raised her left hand, ready to strike him, but just as fast as she raised hers, Reginald raised his. A silent scream tore from Inanna's lungs as her flesh from her inner elbow to her finger tips was sliced open, severing nerves and revealing bone.
Inanna stumbled back, breathing fast and heavy as she kept her eyes on her attacker and pulled her arm into her chest, letting the blood soak into her shirt.
"Take that as a warning" Reginald threatened. "Can you assure me that you will keep your tongue tied about this misfortune?" Reginald asked as Inanna took her unharmed arm out of her jacket and began wrapping the material around her bleeding wound.
"Why should I help you?".
"Because I have spared your life".
Inanna dropped her gaze to Luther. She didn't want to help Reginald not after what she had witnessed nor suffered but in Luther's final moments, he had uttered his wife's name. If Inanna was to die with Luther, Sloane, Five and the rest of their family would have no idea of the truth — Inanna was the only witness. If she wanted to live, she had to play her cards just right, even if that meant lying.
Inanna nodded as she looked back up at Reginald, who was waiting impatiently for a yes or a no from the red head.
"Is that a yes?" Reginald asked. Inanna nodded again. "A deal is not made with a shake of the head".
"Yes" Inanna raised her voice slightly, growing impatient with the man who was finally showing his true nature to her. "Yes, I will help you".
"Wise choice, my child".
Inanna fell to her knees next to Luther as soon as Reginald left his suite — leaving the door to the 'other side' cracked open — preparing to make it look like Inanna and Luther had been attacked by a guardian and that Inanna had only survived with minimal injuries as Luther had protected her with his life.
Inanna held Luther's hand in hers, waiting with a heavy heart and a churning stomach for anyone to walk passed the room, but when Sloane was the first one to appear with Allison behind her, Inanna wished she had gone looking for someone else.
Sloane screamed in horror and her hand flew to her mouth as she ran over to Luther and fell to her knees next to him.
"What happened?" Sloane hovered her hand over the wound on his chest, her words coming out in a sob as Allison stood frozen in disbelief.
"I- we- the door was open" Inanna glanced over to the door that Reginald had opened. "We heard something and-" Inanna shook her head, she couldn't lie, she couldn't do it. "I'm so sorry" Inanna's apology was to both Luther and Sloane.
One after another, alerted by Sloane's scream, the rest of the Hargreeves family, minus Delaney who had been told to stay in her hotel room by Anna and Reginald who was yet to make his return, ran into the suite.
"Oh, my God, Luther" Viktor muttered entering the suite before Five and Anna.
"Oh, shit" Anna mouth fell open as she looked from Luther to Inanna while Five stepped round his dead brother to his wife.
"What happened?" Five's eyes darted across her tear stained and red face as he crouched down in front of her.
Inanna shook her head, she couldn't repeat her lie, not when Five was staring at her with such concern in his eyes.
"He went to go get ice. I couldn't-" Sloane spoke through her sob to answer Five as Five pulled Inanna's head into her chest, rubbing his hand over her back to try and comfort her. "-She said they heard something" Sloane turned to look at the door that led to the 'other side'.
"It must have been him" Lila muttered. "The guardian".
"She's right" Diego stepped towards Luther and crouched down next to him. "Whatever did this had a long curved blade" Diego pointed at the slash across his chest.
"How... how can you be sure?" Viktor asked.
"I don't know much, but I know knives" Diego muttered with tear filled eyes.
Reginald ran into the room and Five felt Inanna tense under his hold as Reginald questioned what had happened. "Children, what's going on?" Reginald gasped in shock, his eyes settling on Luther's body.
Five looked over his shoulder to Reginald. He wasn't sure if Inanna had been frightened by the sudden interruption as Reginald entered the room or if she had been frightened by Reginald himself who conveniently hadn't been in his suite when Luther and Inanna had been attacked.
"Oh, Luther" Reginald mumbled.
"If we attacked first, he would still be alive" Ben said.
Allison, who had slumped against the wall when Diego and Lila had arrived, looked from Inanna to Reginald. Unknown to Inanna, Allison herself had made a deal with Reginald and knew about the deal that Reginald had made the night before with Inanna, she didn't know the details of the deal, but she didn't think Inanna would be capable of murdering Luther, even if she had killed Harlan without a second thought. Allison believed it was Reginald Hargreeves who had murdered Luther to begin his plan and she was right.
The hotel shook and Five tightened his grip on Inanna as explosions went off around the building and the Kugelblitz began its final destruction of the universe.
Ben peaked his head out of the door way and Five helped Inanna to her feet, noticing the painful twist in her face when he held her wrapped arm.
"G-Guys? Hey, guys!" Ben shouted walking back into the room with wide eyes, pointing over his shoulder towards the door.
Klaus held Inanna by her shoulders gently as Five left her side for a second to run over to the door. He knew it was the Kugelblitz, but he had to be certain.
"Okay, we're out of time!" Five shouted as Sloane asked what they were going to do with Luther, and Anna glanced around the room looking for her girlfriend. "The Kugelblitz is here" Five shouted running back into the room.
"Delaney" Though Anna could recall telling Delaney to stay put, nine times out of ten, Delaney would have followed her, but this time she hadn't.
Anna felt like her heart was going to jump out of her chest but as she ran passed Ben, he wrapped his arms around her, stopping her from leaving the room.
"She's gone" Ben whispered to his sister.
"Let go" Anna shouted as Ben dragged her further into the room. "L-let me go, Ben" Anna choked out her words with a sob as Ben whispered that they couldn't loose her too.
"Everyone into the passage!" Reginald shouted as he ran over to the door that he had cracked open before leaving Inanna with Luther's body. "It's the only way!" Reginald said.
Lila pulled the door open, entering first while Diego grabbed the harpoon gun that sat underneath the buffalo head on the wall.
"You agreed to stay!" Viktor said to Diego.
"They killed Luther, all right? Would have killed Inanna too" Diego shouted before following after Lila while Reginald hurried his children along.
Ben was next through the passage, taking Anna with him, who had stopped trying to escape his hold.
"We can't leave him" Sloane said to Inanna.
"I-" Inanna stared blankly at Sloane unable to force out a sentence.
"We have to go now, or we're gonna die" Allison said sitting her hands on Sloane's shoulder as she crouched next to her.
Inanna looked to Five as Klaus crouched down next to Sloane. Five had wanted to stay, even if he did stay, Inanna owed it to Luther to go. Five crossed the small space between them, pressed a fleeting kiss on her forehead. "I'll be right behind you" Five set his hand on Inanna's shoulder. He wanted to stay, but he knew in the time he had left Inanna to grab them some food from the kitchen, something had changed. "I swear to you, I will".
Inanna nodded, she had to trust him and so before Allison entered the reflective passage with Sloane, Inanna entered first, keeping her eyes straight ahead to avoid eye contact with Reginald.
Inanna squinted, blocking out the bright lights that burned her eyes as she walked down the long passage, only glancing once over her shoulder in search of Five, who, like he had swore, was behind Allison and Sloane following the others through the passage.
Lila kicked open the door at the other end of the passage, taking a quick glance around the almost identical pink room before stepping into it hesitantly.
"Let's never do that again" Viktor muttered.
"What, narrowly escape the apocalypse?" Five asked stepping out of the passage.
"It's kind of our thing, isn't it?" Diego scanned the rest of the room while Lila poked her head out into the hallway, checking for the guardian that had supposedly attacked Luther and Inanna.
Inanna unwrapped her jacket from around her wound as she sat down on the small coffee table which was in place of the white couch she had been sat on when Luther had been murdered.
"There's something very wrong about that" Ben muttered looking up at the buffalo ass which hung up on the wall as Anna stepped away from him, casting her eyes down to the floor.
"Same suite, just ass-backward" Lila said walking over to Inanna. "That looks deep" Lila nodded her head at Inanna's bleeding wound and screwed her nose up at the congealed and wet blood and the mangled flesh that clung to Inanna's exposed bone.
"Can- can you get me something to wrap it?" Inanna winced, tearing her gaze away from the wound. Inanna had never been squeamish but she had also never seen her bone before.
Lila looked around the hotel suite as she took Inanna's knife, which she had taken at the farm, out of her pocket. Lila couldn't find anything to tear apart, and when she recalled the cockroaches that she had seen crawling across the floor, Lila didn't think it would be all that sanitary to use anything from the strange hotel which was a copy and paste of the other one.
Five passed Lila a torn piece of his shirt which he had ripped off with his pocket knife while inspecting the room. Lila thanked him before turning back to Inanna as Reginald ran out of the passage, slammed the door shut behind him and leaned against it with a heavy breath.
Five slipped his knife back into his pocket and tucked his shirt into his suit trousers again as he turned to Reginald and Inanna turned her head away from him.
"If we tie it here" Lila pointed to Inanna's arm above the cut, "It will restrict the blood flow. The last thing we want now is you dying from blood loss".
"Wait. Where's Klaus?" Viktor asked Reginald, noticing his brother's absence.
"Children, I'm sorry, but your brother... I did all I could, but he didn't make it through in time" Reginald lied as he looked around at his children and Lila began tying the cloth tightly above Inanna's wound. "The Kugelblitz has claimed its last victim".
Inanna averted her gaze from Lila as Reginald spoke of Klaus's death. Inanna could only assume the real truth and from the sceptical look on Five's face, he did too.
"No, he was right behind me when I entered the tunnel" Five said.
"We need to go back" Sloane said taking a step towards Reginald.
"There's nothing to go back to" Reginald argued. "Children, there will be time for tears later. Right now, we have to keep moving".
"Hey, no" Lila shouted as she looked over to her shoulder to Reginald who had began leaving the room, her voice halting him. "Inanna has half a bloody arm, can she have five minutes?".
"We have no time. She comes with us or she stays here" Reginald argued.
"I'm fine" Inanna looked from Lila to Reginald, speaking before Five had the chance to defend her.
Lila wasn't fooled but she took Inanna's word with a sigh and extended her hand out to her. Inanna took Lila's hand and mumbled out a thank you as the woman helped her to her feet while picking up Inanna's jacket for her.
