"Is that a tuna mold?" Inanna asked Elliott as she did up the button on her sleeve, looking up for a second to see the food that Elliott had spent his morning making, it looked rather odd and Inanna didn't like it much, but Inanna had eaten worse and she'd never tell Elliott she didn't like his food.
"Yes. Can you tell the crazy lady that it's a tuna mold? She keeps calling it mouldy tuna" Elliott said pointing towards the room that Diego had slept in.
Inanna nodded as she glanced around the room. The apartment felt oddly empty without Five's eyes burning into her skin anytime she walked into a room. "Where's Five ran off to?" Inanna asked.
Inanna hadn't seen Five since he had woke her up in the middle of the night, stirring her awake as he pulled the bed covers over her and kissed the top of her head.
"No idea" Elliott shrugged. "We we're looking at the machines, there was an alert and he just vanished- did that- that blippy thing that he does all the time".
"Ah" Inanna mumbled "Has he been gone all morning?" Inanna asked.
Elliott nodded as he carefully sat the tuna mold on table next to the coffee cups.
Inanna expected nothing less, she just wished that Five had woken her up before darting off to do whatever he was doing, especially after Diego almost died. Even if it had been for a brief second, she would have liked to have had the chance to say a quick goodbye — as Five had said they had no idea what could happen.
"I've gotta ask you-you something" Elliott said blinking hard when an item of clothing smacked against the frosted window next to his head. Inanna's eyes widened as she turned away from the window, her eyes catching Diego and Lila's silhouettes on the bed.
"Okay" Inanna nodded as Elliott started decorating the tuna mold, ignoring what Diego and Lila were doing in the room next to them.
"You don't have to answer but I can't stop thinking about it" Inanna nodded, unsure of what Elliott was going to ask her. "Why did Five call you 'Inanna' yesterday?" Elliott asked.
"Oh" Inanna scratched her temple, ignoring the second item of clothing that hit the window with a heavy thud. "Inanna is real my name" Inanna bit her lip lightly waiting for Elliott response as he turned his head to her.
"Like how some people called Henry prefer to be called Harry-".
"Like how the timeline could have potentially been screwed" Inanna interrupted.
Elliott straightened up with a nod, turning his back to the frosted window. "So, Imogen, is- who is Imogen?".
"I am" Inanna poked her thumb into her chest "I'm Imogen Hart" Inanna nodded "But I made the name up-".
"Made it up? You just created a new name? How?" Inanna's brows furrowed. She didn't expect the 'how?' to be the main focus point of his questions, she was expecting more of a 'why?', even though she had already explained why.
"Wait" Elliott extended his hands to her, not wanting her to answer the questions he had just asked. "Who is Inanna?" Elliott asked.
Inanna put her hand over her heart "I am" She said. "Inanna Hope... or Hargreeves, I guess" Inanna shrugged. She never really liked how 'Inanna Hargreeves' sounded, partially because 'Hope' was the only thing she had left of her family.
"I see you kept the same initials" Elliott said. Inanna having a different name was the least mind blowing thing he had found out recently, but it was still a shock.
Inanna nodded "Had to keep some similarities".
Elliott glanced over his shoulders as the noises from the bedroom grew louder. He rubbed the back of his neck as he looked back at Inanna. "Do you want to uh, like get some coffee? From the diner?" Elliott asked, his face turning slightly red.
Inanna replied with a quick nod. "Are you buying or am I?" Inanna asked turning on her heel to head to the door.
"My treat" Elliott said following after Inanna, he picked up his and Inanna's coats off the back of the chair as they left the room.
Inanna and Elliott exited through the shop doors, wanting to get as far away from Diego and Lila as they could. "You can buy me a dress too" Inanna said, she stepped to the side as Elliott pulled the door shut behind them, locking it. "For thinking I was an enemy of the state" Inanna added.
"I-" Elliott turned to Inanna as he tucked his keys into his pocket "I tried to apologise and Diego shoved a cloth in my mouth— and I mean, can you blame me? You saw the tape, you saw what happened to-"
"Elliott" Inanna raised her voice, eyes wide as she put her hands on his arms. Elliott's eyes widened slowly as he realised what he had almost said. "Stop talking".
"Yes" Elliott nodded. "I'll do that".
Inanna sighed. "Good".
Elliott swallowed harshly as Inanna dropped her hands from him. "So, what colour dress are you thinking?" Elliott asked.
━━━━━
"Is someone getting married? An older sibling? A cousin?" Doris, the dress shop owner, asked as she pulled at the back of the dark green dress that Inanna wore. It rested just below her knees, and sat comfortably on her shoulders.
Elliott had stayed with Inanna for a little while, before taking off to get himself another coffee. He told Inanna he'd be back in time to pick her up and Inanna didn't doubt that. Although they had driven quite far to the dress shop, there was a coffee shop not too far.
"It's just a party" Inanna said extending her arms out at her sides as Doris continued checking over every seam, wanting the dress to fit perfectly.
"Just a party? This isn't just a dress, honey. Does your father know how much it costs" Doris asked, she didn't want to be wasting her time on perfecting the dress if Inanna wasn't going to buy it in the end.
Inanna felt her body go stiff at the word 'father'. The woman didn't know, and Elliott and Inanna did look like a father and daughter, but she didn't like it. Jonny Hope was her father and no one could replace him, not even the man who had so kindly opened his home to her. "He knows" Inanna mumbled.
"I sure hope so, because this dress looks gorgeous on you, honey, it would be a shame for you to not leave with it".
Inanna glanced to the mirror in front of herself. Over the years of being stuck in her younger body, Inanna had learned to not hate it so much. Did she wish she was a little older? Yes, it would make buying things and overall existing easier as she'd be seen as an adult instead of a child, but Inanna didn't hate it.
She had missed out on plenty of things in the apocalypse and the past six years, travelling from one place to the next, had allowed her to experience some of the things a normal person would do, even if she experienced them alone.
"How about some little heels to go with it? I can ring through to Doreen next door, she'll probably drop dead when she sees this dress" Doris chuckled as she stepped away from Inanna to call through to the shoe shop next door.
"Okay" Inanna mumbled.
Inanna smoothed her hands down the front of the dress. She had always loved dressing up when she was younger, she knew it was because Marnie owned a dress shop and would let Inanna try anything on, but also because she felt like a princess in the dresses — even if they did drag across the floor and trip her over.
"Doreen isn't answering" Doris sighed as she put the phone back up on the holder. She taped her hands against the counter, a smile forming on her face. "I'll tell you what, Doreen keeps a spare key here, she's a little forgetful sometimes" Doris chuckled. "If you promise to stay here, I can quickly run next door and pick out a pair of heels for you, what do you say? Promise?".
Inanna nodded "I promise I won't go anywhere" Inanna had no plans of running off without paying for the dress. A week on dish duty in a diner had taught Inanna that stealing wasn't exactly the best thing — even if she didn't have anyway of buying food for herself — but in the end, she at least landed herself a job at the same diner as a waitress, which allowed her to move out of the farmer's barn she had been sleeping in.
Inanna brushed her hands against the soft material as Doris slipped out of the shop, smiling brightly at Inanna as she left. Inanna smiled back at her, her smile fading as the door shut with a click.
"Oh, man" Inanna muttered. Inanna ran her fingers through her hair, pulling the strands that fell in front of hair face behind her head, tilting her head slightly.
"No sequins?" Inanna stumbled from the platform, her breath getting caught in her throat as she felt her foot slip from underneath her.
Inanna knew it was Five, and she could feel his smug smirk burning into her skin as she stabilised her footing, her arms outstretched to balance herself.
"I like it. Very you, very beautiful" Five tucked his hands into his pockets as Inanna glared at him through the mirror, her hands pressing against her temples as her body phased.
Inanna balled her hands up, her nails digging into the palms of her hands as she lowered them to her sides. "One of these days I'm going to have a knife in my hand and you won't like how it will end".
"If I recall correctly, and I do" Five leaned towards her. "You said I'm faster than you, which is true. So, I don't think it would end exactly how you expect".
"No?" Inanna glanced over her shoulder to him "You wanna test it, I have a knife in my coat" Inanna looked over at her coat which hung on the dark brown coat hanger by the door, partially blocking the view to the street.
"As much as I'd love to, there's someone i'd like you too meet".
"I'm a little busy, Five. Do you want me to attend this gala?".
Inanna turned around, stumbling with a gasp when Five appeared in front of her, his face inches from hers as he stood on the same small platform, his arm going around Inanna's waist to keep her from falling.
"Preferably I'd like you as my date, yes" Five nodded "But you know I don't hate solo missions".
"I have to pay for this dress" Inanna put her hands on Five's arms, her voice dropping in volume, they were so close that she didn't need to talk any louder.
"Get dressed and we'll come back for it tomorrow. Doris will have your shoes by then".
Inanna raised her brows as she tilted her head. "How long have you been here, exactly?" Inanna asked.
"I saw Elliott at the coffee shop, he told me where you were".
Inanna sighed. That didn't exactly answer her question of how long Five had been in the shop for but it at least cleared up how he had found her. "Of course he did".
"I told him to head home" Five stepped down from the platform, holding his hand out for Inanna.
Inanna's eyes widened slightly as she remembered the reason they had even left the apartment in the first place. She didn't think Elliott would be going home any time soon.
Inanna took Five's hand and stepped off the platform. Avoiding Five's questioning gaze.
"What?" Five asked, watching as Inanna hurried to the back of the shop to change out of the dress.
Pulling the curtain closed Inanna shook her head "I just- if your plan is to head back to the apartment, I think we should stay away for a little while" Inanna said.
"Should I ask why?" Five asked leaning against the counter.
"Unless you want to know what your brother is up to when he should definitely be resting" Inanna's voice was slightly muffled as she tried and failed to unzip the dress at the back. "I wouldn't ask".
Five grimaced. "You aren't subtle, Inan. Thank you for that".
Inanna rolled her eyes as she pulled open the curtain, poking her head out. Five tilted his head towards her, raising his brow "Can you help me?".
Once Inanna was ready, Five blinked them out of the shop just as the door swung open and Doris returned with the heels and an excited smile. Her smile faded quickly when she saw the shop empty and the dress hung up on the rack by the counter where Five had left it.
"Told you we wouldn't be long" Five let go of Inanna's hand as he straightened up his blazer, his words directed at the brunette woman leaning against her car round the back of the dress shop.
The woman looked at Inanna puzzled before looking to Five, waiting for him to introduce them to eachother. Inanna recognised the woman as Five's sister, Vanya. She could remember reading her book during the apocalypse. It was interesting to say the least.
"Oh" Five turned to Inanna "This is my sister, Vanya" Five gestured to Vanya. "Vanya, this is my wife, Inanna".
Vanya waved awkwardly as she stepped towards Inanna, her brows furrowed slightly, noticing the ray of colours that phased around Inanna, but after everything Vanya had been told about her family and the world ending, Inanna's phasing was nothing. "I can't believe I have a sister-in-law. I didn't believe Five when he told me, but-" Vanya smiled in disbelief. Vanya was still trying to wrap her head around doomsday and finding her brothers. "I just can't believe it".
"It's nice to finally meet you, Vanya" Inanna smiled. Inanna liked Vanya a lot more than Diego already.
"You too" Vanya nodded.
"As sweet as this is" Five interrupted looking from Inanna to Vanya "We have places to be".
━━━━━
"I didn't expect this" Inanna's nose scrunched up as she inched closer to Five, her shoulder bumping into his as the smell of sweat and alcohol filled her senses.
"When I said that Luther worked for Jack Ruby, what exactly did you expect?" Five asked, he turned his head towards Inanna, wanting his voice to be heard over the shouting and booing from the crowd around them.
"He owns nightclubs and strip clubs. What do you think I was expecting?" Inanna retorted.
"The girls at the bars are too young for you" Inanna rolled her eyes at his comment "Doris is more age appropriate" Inanna caught Five's smile as he turned to look at his brother who was fighting in the boxing ring in front of them.
Luther, although not much bigger than the man he was fighting, he could beat him with his strength alone, but for some reason Luther didn't fight back, letting the man land punch after punch.
Luther had started out well, and Inanna thought the fight would have been over a lot sooner, but it went down hill very quickly once Luther seemed to daze out of the fight for a moment.
"He's pummelling him" Vanya said.
"What the hell are you doing?" Jack Ruby shouted from the other side of the ring.
The man grabbed Luther by his head and shoved him into the barrier next to Inanna, Five and Vanya.
"Oh, my God, Luther" Vanya muttered.
"Why isn't he fighting back?" Five asked.
The fight continued with Luther being used as a punching bag as blood dripped down his cheek from a gash.
"Again!" Luther shouted. "Hit me!".
"Luther, are you crazy? Just hit him!" Five shouted.
"Come on, Luther!" Jack Ruby shouted, growing more impatient with every punch.
The man looked around, unsure of what was happening as Luther muttered for him to hit him again.
"Give me everything you've got!" Luther shouted.
With one final punch to Luther's jaw, Luther flew backwards, his body slumping to the floor with a thud. The crowd grew louder, their fists punching in the air as they booed and shouted.
"Shit" Five muttered.
"Why didn't he fight back?" Vanya asked. None of them knew why and by the look on Jack Ruby's face as he barged passed the crowd, he didn't know why his best fighter didn't fight back either.
"Is he dead?" Inanna leaned forwards slightly, tilting her head as she tried to see if Luther was still alive.
Five pointed at Luther's chest which rose and fell slowly as he breathed in and out. "He's alive".
