Nathaniel's parents, Sariel and Adakaius, were both killed during the Black Moon's Massacre. This was an event in Nathaniel's homeland of Selis where the House of the Night, the Tenebris demons, attacked the Skypyre and Moonstruck families, slaughtering almost everyone. Nathaniel and his cousin, Kirian, were the only two to escape. Nathaniel was seven.

After Nathaniel escaped, he met Xavier, who was similarly fleeing his country. The two raised each other until they were sixteen, when both enrolled into the Dorikva College of Magic. Nathaniel's magic, being chaotic, was too powerful and he was expelled after blowing up an entire wing of the school. Xavier opted to stay and Nathaniel left to build his own life.

Nathaniel found the Island (known back then as the Isle of the Lost) by pure mistake, but he began to cultivate his magic and abilities there. The Isle is actually a sentient being , once a dragon who was cursed into servitude to a demon, and asked Nathaniel to free it. After Nathaniel killed the demon, both of them were too fond of each other to actually leave.

When Nathaniel was roughly twenty, he attempted to fight Daisuke and Noriko at the same time because they intruded on the Island. He lost hysterically badly, but Sakura admired him and took him under her wing. Thus he spent a good five years studying with the Katsu family.

Nathaniel's favorite child is Rose because she reminds him of Luna, though Griffin comes close in second.

Nathaniel's cousin, Kirian, is the father of Lunaria. Lunaria happens to be Lunima's adoptive daughter. This is because, after Nathaniel tracked down Lunaria, she was just a toddler and he was already engaged in war with Noriko. He didn't want her to be endangered - as, at the time, she was one of only five remaining shapeshifters in the world including him - so he begged Lunima to take her instead.

Nathaniel is very keenly aware that his species is close to extinction. That's why he has so many children - he's always been highly disappointed in the fact that most of his children weren't shapeshifters.

Nathaniel is also highly disappointed that Rose rejected the fact that she's truly a shapeshifter, but focuses on his grandchildren instead. Mars and Harmony happen to both be shapeshifters, so he pays special attention to them.

Of the nine shapeshifters known, Nathaniel is related to six of them - Lunaria, his cousin's child; Rose and Adrien, his own children; Mars and Harmony, his grandchildren; and Zalaam, Lunaria's son. Of the other two, Amyr (Zalaam's father) is deceased while Sabishi has secluded herself away after the death of her daughter, Zaria.

The Island has a lot of Japanese cherry trees because they're Nathaniel's favorite tree.
