Chapter 14
We were back in the tattoo parlor, I was looking through the tattoo designs. I had no idea what to get. I looked over at Tori, she was at her station, sketching on a piece of paper. I bit the inside of my cheek and walked over. She looked up at me with her full brown eyes.
"Well if it isn't First jumper herself."
"I need to talk to you," I said, finally.
"I told you, I only do tattoos." She said setting down her sketch book.
"But I-" I looked down at her sketch book. She had drawn a snake. It was long, it's scaly back as bumpy as a waves as if it were moving. It was a King Cobra, I could tell by the way the extra skin on it's neck was flared out. It's tongue slightly poked out of its mouth.
"That one." I whispered, "I'd like that tattoo." I clarified.
"I have the ability to sense people's fear." Tori whispered as she got the needle ready. I held out my wrist to her.
"Wait, ability?" I asked, confused.
"All vampires have powers, after 3 months, of course." She looked at me, her eyebrow raised, "snakes, really?" I felt myself blush.
"What am I?" I whispered as silence took over. She looked up from my wrist.
"Um, a vampire?" She asked with a soft smile. She was so much like Fallon, I had almost forgotten she was only the same age as me. She had just always reminded me of a mother.
"No," I whispered and looked around. "I mean, a hybrid"- she tensed up - "see, like that. Everyone gets weird whenever I talk about it."
"Probably because they're very rare." She said smiling up at me. I sighed and looked over at the wall, I wasn't going to be getting any answers, but I could at least enjoy my new tattoo.
If I wanted to face this fear I was going to need to face it, which is what I was going to be doing from now on.
"Will stop!!" Fallon squealed as Will picked her up and threw her over his shoulder.
"Too bad you can't stop me!" He laughed and he spun around with her. I stayed in the back with Rick. We were sharing piece of cake that we had all snuck out of the kitchen. He took the last bite as we looked over at Will and Fallon.
"He likes her, you know." Rick said, his hands in his pockets.
"Well duh, I mean she is gorgeous." I said without thinking, I really was hanging out with Fallon too much for me to say something like that.
"Well so are you." Rick said smiling at me. I looked away, the awkward silence hanging in the air.
"Well," Rick said bending down and pulling me up by my legs and throwing me over his shoulder. "Why stand, when you can be carried?" He asked as he began to run. I heard myself laugh, a real laugh. And I couldn't even believe it. I looked over as Fallon kicked Will after he pretended to drop her. I could hear the sound of the chasm when Rick let me down.
"Uh oh, instructor police." He mumbled.
"Which one?" Fallon groaned. I stepped from behind Rick and looked over at the chasm. Four and some other vampires I didn't know were huddled around the chasm, bottles in their hands and obviously intoxicated. I watched as he threw his head back in laughter as if he were laughing at the funniest thing in the world.
"Wait, didn't he say on the first day not to get dr"-
"Shh! Come on let's just go." Will took Fallon's hand. I smiled to myself and turned back to walk with them, but stopped hearing my name.
"Eeeee!" I looked over as Four jogged over to me.
"Hey Four," I said, laughing.
"What's so funny?" He slurred, "you're not mad at me again are you?" I didn't get a chance to speak, he was already talking. "You know I really don't like when you get mad at me."
"Maybe if you were like this all the time then I wouldn't be so mad." I said crossing my arms. He raised an eyebrow.
"But you like me, that's why you do get mad." I put my hand on my head with a soft smile. His eyes trailed down to my inked hand. "You got a new tattoo." He took my hand, running his finger tips over the ink. "Oh yeah, the snakes." He whispered.
"Do you like it?" I challenged.
"Love." He corrected. He moved my long hair away from my collarbone and pressed two fingers on my other tattoo. I flinched at his touch. "You look so much like her." He mumbled.
"Who?" I raised an eyebrow. He shook his head and raised the bottle back up to his lips.
"That's for me to know, and for you to never find out."
I tossed and turned all night. I couldn't sleep. I got out of my bed the next morning and jogged into the hall, I went over to where everyone was but hit a clear glass plain, I stumbled back. Fallon smirked over at me and whispered into Peter's ear. I could hear the word 'hybrid'. I sucked in a breath and pressed my hand against the glass, I looked all around and felt myself slowly panic; I was in a glass box. I looked down to see that water began to flood underneath me. My ankles were already soaked. I looked around by now everyone was gone and I was alone.
"Hey!" I yelled slamming my hand against the mirror. I began to hyperventilate feeling the water reach my knees.
Focus.
I just needed to slow my heart rate down.. My ribs were now drenched in water. I felt my feet rise off the metal floor and closed my eyes.
Slow breaths.
The water was over my arms and reaching above my collarbone. I kept my eyes closed and blocked out everything, even when the water was above my head and I opened my eyes, now under neath the water. I furrowed my eyebrow at the faint crack in the glass.
This isn't real. It's a simulation.
I tapped the glass three times. On the fourth tap the glass shattered into what seemed like millions of pieces and all the water flooded out with me in it.
I opened my eyes and sucked in a deep breath. I coughed and threw my legs over the chair, my knees against elbows as I held my head up. It felt so real, I touched my clothes, they were dry.
"How'd you break the glass?"
"Yes, Four, I'm fine." I said keeping my eyes closed.
"How'd you break the glass?" I opened my eyes and turned back to look at him in the eye. I finally spoke after what felt like forever.
"I don't know." I said. He squinted at me for even longer. I tried not to look away. "What were your aptitude results?"
"I'm not supposed to share those." I said, standing up.
"E." I turned back to him, arms crossed.
"Doppelgänger, dad." I said rolling my eyes.
"You think this is funny?" He asked sternly standing up.
"You seemed to be laughing up a storm last night." I blurted out.
"I'm only going to ask this one more time," he said slowly walking over to me. "What were your test results?"
"Doppelgänger." I said, slowly.
"You are such a liar." I don't know why it hurt my so much when he said it, but I felt tears streaming down my face. I went to the back door and turned the door knob.
"You know you should get drunk more often," I heard myself whisper. "You're a lot easier to talk to." I slammed the door closed behind me and let the tears fall.
