Testing: Thalia

"Come on Nico!" I called from the living room. Shrugging on my sliver jacket I stepped into my pair of boots. Today we had to take the tests that would 'place us' in our faction. I had no doubts about my 'placement' but the whole thing was nerve-racking.

Born and raised Dauntless, and planning on staying that way. As far as I can tell my family as been Dauntless too. My dad died when I was young, and no one knew my mother-I was brought up by my uncle and his wife. They had a son, Nico, my cousin and a pain in the ass.

In fact I was waiting for him right now.

"Nico we can't afford to miss the train!" I yelled up the stairs. My uncle, Hades, had already set off to work and his wife, Persephone, was just about to start her shift. She walked into the living room and chuckled at my tapping foot.

"He's just nervous and wanting to put it off." She patted my shoulder. Her beautiful brown hair was braided back and she wore the usual of a guard, but somehow made it look exquisite. She was my uncle's wife but not Nico's mom, they had only been married since Nico was five. I had been living with them since we were both eight.

I sighed and ran a hand through my black hair. The one thing my uncle and I shared. Well, besides pale skin. My eyes are blue but my uncle and Nico both have dark brown eyes. "Don't worry, you'll both be fine no matter the results." Persephone pinched my cheek and smiled at me. I waved her off but grinned back.

"There's my little Hunter." She teased. Hunter had been my nickname from her due to when I was little I would 'hunt' Nico down and catch him. It was silly and I had pouted about it at first, but it grew on me. She compared me to one of Artemis's hunters from the myths, hence the sliver jacket I got for my eleventh birthday.

I wore it every day.

Nico finally walked down the stairs. His hair was a mess, his shirt was crumpled, his eyes had bags under them, and his jeans were hanging low on his hips. Persephone cleared her throat and Nico raised one eyebrow. His step-mom rolled her eyes, then started fixing him.

He tried to wave her off, saying it didn't matter, but next thing he knew he had his jeans up where they were supposed to be, his shirt was smoothed out, his hair was some-what tamed back. There was nothing to do about the bags under his eyes, but Persephone fixed everything else.

"There we go, off you two go." She ushered us out of the door. Nico and I made for the train, waiting with other kids.

After a while the train neared the school and people started jumping off. Nico and I waited until we were a little closer, just so we wouldn't have to walk more, and jumped.

I slung my arm over his shoulders and we talked while walking into the building.

Classes where shorted just so we all could take the tests, which is fine by me I hated the classes anyway. They herded us into the cafeteria to wait for our names. Nico and I sat in the corner and watched the other people.

There was a group of Amity kids, they were separated from the rest-just to themselves. A Candor boy caught my eyes, he also was by himself-just staring at his hands and tapping his foot. Two Erudites were sat together and talking while the blonde read books. An Abnegation boy was by himself and smiling as he watched everyone.

Nico was first, Di Angelo was his last name. His mother's not his father. He came back, but something was off. He was quiet even for him. Something seemed settled in him, however.

My name and another person's were called at the same time. The Candor boy got up, his name was Jason Grace apparently. Mine being Thalia Grace, I found it funny that we shared last names. Though I did hate mine, it belonged to my mother apparently.

The one giving my test was a short Abnegation woman. She let me sit in the red chair, and scope out the room. Mirrored walls, machine, bright lights on the ceiling. Nothing unusual, I guessed. I took the vial that she gave me and drank it.

I was shoved into a reality of an empty cafeteria with a table in front of me. On the table was a knife and a piece of cheese. Nothing else, just those two things.

"Choose." A female voice said in my ear.

A knife could help me more than a piece of cheese, I didn't hesitate to pick it up and grip the handle. The second I picked it up I was glad I did, a dog came out of nowhere, snarling and growling.

My first thought was to use the knife, not hesitating. The handle felt familiar in my hand, I angled my wrist the threw the blade. It neared the dog then I was waking up on the ground of the testing room. Nothing was near me, the walls were still mirrored but there wasn't a chair or machine. There was a door, though.

I walked through it and onto a bus with one other man. He had a newspaper pulled up over his face and a hat covering everything else. I wished I had the knife again, just so I felt safer. The newspaper said something about a murderer, and the picture felt somewhat familiar.

The man got in my face and shoved the newspaper up. "Do you know this man?" I shoved him back and growled.

"No I don't!" But I felt I did. Though, I wasn't about to tell him that, it wouldn't end well for me if I did.

"Do you know this man?" He growled again.

"No!"

"You could save me if you did." He pleaded. I shoved him back again and said I didn't for the last time. That's when the test ended.

The woman gave me a small nod before leaving me alone in the red chair. I ran a hand through my hair, based on my choices . . . where would I end up? Could you fail the test?

All the worries on my shoulders evaporated when the woman came back in. She smiled at me and winked. "You're just fine in Dauntless."
