Chapter 46
"Wait here, alright girls? Then you can come in and see your baby brother in a minute." I instruct, while Ellie and Ash bounce around impatiently.
"Wittle Buver!" Ashlen squeals, immediately being shushed by the nurses, and Blake, Uncle Uri and I.
She giggles quietly, "Sowwy."
I walk over to the room that Dad told me to go to, cautious. The door creaks open ever so slowly, revealing a dim room. I step out from the shadows, overjoyed by what I see. Dad is dead asleep on the couch, but Mom is sitting up, a baby blue blanket laying in her arms. My baby brother sleeps soundly, no longer looking sickly.
"Mom, how is he?" I inquire, walking to the side of her bed.
"Wonderful, it was like a miracle overnight." She responds, rubbing his soft cheek with her thumb.
I gaze at his small self, a little miracle.
"Do you want to hold him Nat?" She asks, moving her hand to support his neck.
I sigh, "Of course."
Mom hands me my new brother, and I hold him carefully. As soon as he comes in contact with my arms, his beautiful eyes flutter open, and it almost seems like he smiles. He's got the most handsome features, Dad's facial structure, with Mom's stormy blue-grey eyes and wispy blonde hair. He shifts in the swaddle, pulling out his hand, which wraps around my finger. A grin creeps up my cheeks, and I gently kiss his soft forehead. He doesn't squirm or cry why I hold him, just remains peaceful and happy.
"Hello my handsome little brother!" I whisper, caressing his soft skin.
"His name is Carter Maxon Eaton." Mom informs me.
"A handsome name for a handsome baby." I hum, as he plays with a stray piece of my hair.
After a few minutes of admiring the little miracle, Uncle Uriah brings the others into the room. Dad gets up from the couch, looking exhausted. Carter reaches a hand out to Ashlen, so I lean down for her to see her new little brother.
"Hi baby!" She giggles, high-fiving his hand. He smiles lightly, but being a newborn, his movements are slow and soft.
Eliza walks up, and gives him a hug, which is met with a bunch of us cooing, "Aw!" She smiles, pushing him back towards me. "Buv." She says.
We all stop, "Did she just speak?" Dad gasps.
Eliza smiles, "Buv." That was the first time she's said anything for a year! We all cheer, still trying to remain quiet for Carter's sake.
"Can I hold my handsome little man?" Dad asks, as I stand up straight.
I tenderly place him in his arms. Dad gazes down at his son in admiration, "My handsome little boy."

Two Days Later
Blake left the day after we got to see Carter, since he had been here for almost a week and his mom needed help at home. Still, now that he's left, we have one guest bedroom. The girls still share a room, then Carter and I each have our own.
Mom rocks him as she heads for his nursery, whereas I go to help put away her things from the hospital. She's been very fragile, and wants to focus on keeping Carter happy, so we all leave her be. I finish putting away her belongings, and head back to my room. Eliza and Ashlen are down for a nap, so I have some alone time. Naturally, I text Blake to pass the time. He offers an invitation for me to come over, since I haven't seen his mother in two years. Well...talked to.
I jump off of my bed, and run over to Dad, who's sitting in his office doing some kind of paperwork. "Hey Dad!" I greet throwing my arms over his shoulders.
He laughs, setting his work down, "Hey Natalie Rose, what do you need?"
I give him a kiss on the cheek, "Could I go to Blake's for the night? Mom has Carter covered, and the girls shouldn't be too bad. Plus, you have Uncle Uriah here for another day, before he goes back to Dauntless with Aunt Marlene."
He sighs, "I guess, just text me when you are coming back. I know Jan is there, but still, don't get into any trouble."
I squeal, giving him a tight hug, "Thanks Dad!"
Within minutes, I've packed a bag and have it slung over my shoulder.
"See you tomorrow Nat!" Dad calls, while cooking lunch for the twins.
"See you later loser!" I joke, walking out the door.
I can't use a car yet, not for another week until I take the test that they make us do, so I head for the trains. They've been going for years, and I don't think they'll ever stop. The closest one to Abnegation is still a few blocks off from the main roads, so it's still a hefty walk to get there. Based on the times posted nearby, there's only a few minutes until the train should come.
I lean against an old concrete post. It used to support a building, which has long since crumbled to pieces. The rails begin to vibrate just a little, which grows into a more intense shake as the train approaches. The front begins to come into view, so I start running as it approaches. It's muscle memory now, the movements of jumping up into the train cars. I almost don't realize I'm in the train car until I've slumped against the wall.
The area is empty, so it's just me and my thought for fifteen minutes until it arrives at the Dauntless compound. The vibration of the train is almost soothing, a constant rhythm that seems to almost calm you. I hold my head in my hands, legs crossed, and remain just outside of the door. Chicago passes by in a blur, almost as if it's only an image in my head. Of course, most of my knowledge of Chicago is long faded memories from two years ago.
I relax, forgetting about all of my stress, if only for a mere minute or two. After dawdling around the car, walking along the edge, I spot the familiar roof coming into view. It approaches quicker than what I've remembered, but somehow, I still jump on smoothly.
The gravel is the same, if a little bit lower, but it looks identical. I stroll over to the edge of the roof, peering down the hole. Well, if I'm going to go into Dauntless, might as well go in style. My feet sit on the edge, back facing the hole. In one swift movement, I flip off, falling through the air. My bag falls beside me, having fell of when I flipped. A scream escapes my lips as the wind flies past my body, and withing seconds I'm flat on the net.
"I knew you'd jump!" The voice comes immediately when I land, making me let out an ear piercing scream.
"Relax it's just me!" Blake bursts into a laughing fit, still holding down the edge down.
I climb out of the net, and punch him in the chest, "You're such a dick!"
He chuckles, grabbing my waist so I can get the rest of the way down, "Sure, but you still came."
Blake grabs my bag from the net, and we head towards his apartment. Dauntless is packed, so every few minutes I get stopped by people who I barely remember greeting me. When we finally make it to Blake's apartment, his mom is cooking something for dinner.
"Natalie darling, is that you?" She asks, stirring some vegetables.
I run over to her, realizing now how much bigger I've gotten, because when we hug she's completely covered in my arms. Jan laughs, pushing back, "You've grown so much!"
"Well, two years in a bed will do that." I laugh, a beaming smile growing across my face.
We spend the evening watching movies and running around the compound, feeling like we're thirteen again. It's nice to let loose, and just have fun every once in a while. After a filling meal, and a run around the common area, I'm exhausted.
"You ready to go to bed?" Blake asks, as we head down the ramps.
I squeeze my eyes tight, then open them wide, "No, I'm alright."
He raises an eyebrow, "You're moving insanely slow and I swear you're falling asleep as you're walking. Are you sure about that?"
I laugh, shaking out my arms, "I've got this."
Without warning, he swings me into his arms, which is both unexpected, and enjoyable. My muscles relax, "Thank you Blake."
"You're welcome, my rose."
I snuggle my face into his chest, "Rose?"
"Yes, you're my rose."
I let my breathing even out, and can barely tell when I drift off to sleep in his arms.
