Chapter 42

It takes a few moments for me to fully come back to my senses, still in a half state of sleep. I wake in Blake's comforting arms, a grin creeping across my cheeks. It's peculiar, so much time stranded in the dark, and I can wake up able to see my surroundings.

"Morning babe." Blake murmurs, startling me a bit.

I let out a sigh, "Morning Blake. How long have you been awake?"

"Just a few minutes, I didn't want to wake you." He responds, his breath tickling my neck.

I adjust, so my body faces Blake. Once more, there is that sense of fascination. Blake seems so different than my last remaining memories. He's built larger, his jaw more defined, and his hair just a bit darker. Then again, my own body is contrasting from before, very different. The idea is still hard to grasp, the fact that I missed out on two entire tears of my childhood, two years that will never come back to me.

"What are you thinking about?" Blake mutters, pushing a stray brown hair from my face.

I glance down, suddenly very aware, "Just, it's hard. Adjusting to, basically, an entirely new life."

He tugs me closer, "I know, it must be so..."

"Stupid. I should just get over it." I finish, letting out an exaggerated sigh.

Blake furrows his eyebrows, "No, I was going to say weird. You've got an entirely different life. You should take time."

I nod, accepting his words. My legs stretch outwards, touching the floor. That's one other thing everyone takes for granted, when you aren't in a paralyzing coma.

"We should get downstairs, I've got something I want to show you today."

"What is it?" I question, my feet contacting the plush carpet of the floor.

Blake laughs, "You'll see. For now, I'll make your breakfast."

I stretch out again, and walk down the wooden stairs. This Abnegation home is so unfamiliar, so different than Dauntless. It's absolutely insane how my parents moved our entire life just to keep their almost dead daughter in comfort.

"Natalie? Is that you?" Mom's voice echoes from the living room.

I race down the rest of the way, smiling giddily, "Good morning Mom!"

She is standing in the kitchen, pushing some food around in a pan. Blake won't have to make my breakfast after all. I smile, hopping onto a bar stool.

"Good morning gorgeous, how are you feeling?" She asks, turning around to give me a quick kiss on the cheek.

"It's amazing to not be paralyzed in a bed. I missed moving around, even if now I kind of feel a little bit wobbly." I admit.

She nods, "Well at least you still have good muscle mass, thank goodness for Erudite medicine."

Our family has always been especially fit, even Mom when she is pregnant. I've maintained abs and pretty decent muscles since I was nine, and was beyond elated that I woke up with them still intact. I watch Mom cook, focused a little on her huge pregnant belly. It's peculiar as well, seeing that while I've been gone my little brother was growing, getting ready to come into this world.

After Mom finishes cooking, Blake and I devour our food, eating like hungry monsters. That's not just that I haven't had solid food in so long, it's that I'm a teenager.

"Maybe I should have made more than one pack of bacon." Mom laughs, shaking her head.

I smile, "Thanks Mom! Breakfast was delicious!" My feet move like lightning towards the backyard, eager to see what Blake wanted to show me.

Mom raises an eyebrow, "Where are you two off to?"

"Just going to have some fun, you know, since it's my first full day back." I respond, sliding open the door.

She nods, "Just be careful, we don't need any accidents."

"Yeah, yeah, I know."

Blake follows me out, and we walk towards the more abandoned area. A few of the houses got destroyed, way back when, so nobody really comes near the back corner of Abnegation. We end in the center of the wreckage, where I rest on a piece of fallen stone.

"So, what is it you want to show me?" I ask, avid to see what he has in store.

Blake stands in front of me, nervously twitching his fingers, "Well, you know I used to have fire and Earth, in the safe house."

I nod, smiling, "You gave me the prettiest flowers everyday, I loved them."

He nods, giving  off a shining smile, "Right. Well, anyways, while you were gone, something happened to my elements. I didn't know what it was, and neither does my mother."

I cock my head, curious, "Do you have all four elements as well?"

Blake bites his lip, a jittery habit of his, "Well, sort of. I just have...different elements."

My eyebrows furrow, being relatively confused, "Well, wh-"

"I'll have to show you." He interrupts, standing taller, "I have... electricity, metal, darkness and light."

I gasp, words caught on my tongue.

Blake holds his hand upward, and suddenly, his eyes turn white. All of the light in the sky is warped, landing in his hand. The brightness of the ball of sun in his hand is so intense, I can barely look at it. He tosses it upward, and the light disperses into the sky.

"That was insane!" I exclaim, laughing hysterically.

"There's a little more to that one." He adds, his eyes go white once more, and his body bursts with light."

I grin, "That's crazy, really."

He simmers down, smiling like an idiot, "It's weird, I know."

"Well then how does dark work, if light sort of makes it dark?" I ask.

He nods, "Yeah, I mean I could wave my hand and make it dark, but I can also do this."

Blake holds his hand out to a fallen chair, and suddenly, the color drain, turning it to a pitch black. I gawk, probably looking like an awestruck child.

"Do electricity!" I urge, impatient to see his next new, unique ability.

He nods, "Rush me why don't you?"

I laugh, shaking my head. Blake once again, holds out his hand towards the sky. He snaps, and a lightning bolt darts from the heavens to his hand.

"Is it cool to say my boyfriend is like, and actual god now?" I inquire, messing with him.

He shakes his head, "Hardy har har, "And throws it at a pile of debris, which almost catches on fire.

"And last, but certainly not least, metal." I demand, standing up from the piece of jagged stone beneath me.

Blake looks hesitant, but agrees, "It's a little bit different than the others." he starts, shaking out his arms.

"How?"I ask, walking towards him.

He holds out a hand, signalling to step back. I obey, staying a good ten feet away from him. He breaths in, focusing, before a fit of dust erupts. I cough, waving it away with my hand. My eyes gaze forward, seeing what he meant.

Two huge iron wings adorn Blake's back, like some godly creature.

"Blake that's... Oh my..."

"I know, come here." He insists, waving me towards him.

I oblige, walking into his familiar, comforting arms.

"Ready?"

"For?"

"This?" Without warning, He blasts into the air, wings, pounding the atmosphere. I laugh, unsure of how to feel. We are easily soaring two thousand feet in the air, taller than The Hub. Before us is a gorgeous sight, prettier than anything either of us has ever seen. The rejuvenated Chicago buildings reflect the beaming sun, creating an illusion like our city is sparkling. The citizens look like ants, tiny people walking the streets. The fallen ruins of Chicago twinkle with morning sun, still showing a side of beauty.

We glide through the sky for only a few minutes, before Blake brings us once more back to the ground. The whole moment is surreal, although nothing is implausible when you live in a post-apocalyptic world with a bunch of people with superpowers.

Wow.

I never thought I would think that. I sigh, almost sad to be back on the ground. "Maybe we should head back home, you've got to pack up your things to go back to Dauntless soon anyways." I say, grabbing his hand.

Blake grins, "Yeah, we should head back."

We walk silently back home, approaching the backyard, which is closer. Before we go inside, Blake stops, and turns to face me.

"Nat?"

"Yes Blake?" I respond, beaming.

He takes my hands in his, "You'll be happy to know... I'm moving to Abnegation, Mom and I."

I squeal giddily, pulling him into a hug. He laughs, holding me close.

"That's amazing Blake! This will be perfect, we can live near each other, and-"

He cuts me off with a gentle kiss, which surprises me. I close my eyes, my arms looping around his neck. It was so sudden, but so perfectly timed. Slowly, we savor the moment.

"What's going on here?" Dad's voice is quick, ruining the perfect occasion.

I drop my head down, my forehead leaned against Blake's chest. Of course, my father had to come and make a big deal out of this.

We both turn towards him, bright red cheeks that would put tomatoes to shame.

"Dad, it was really nothing, I was ju-"

"With all due respect, sir, I kissed her first. She was just rambling, and I needed some way to keep her quiet." Blake takes the blame, smiling down at me.

I punch his arm for the little bit about shutting me up, a smile curling at my lips.

Dad shakes his head, "Just, don't get wrapped up in anything you don't want to, that's all I'm saying." He walks back into the house.

I turn to Blake, and burst out laughing, "He is so overprotective!"

"Damn, you are 16! How overbearing does he need to be?" Blake chuckles, still grinning at me.

I nod, face red from laughing. This day has been so weird, but in a way, I'm so glad that things are getting back on track. If a little bit different.
