Chapter 4
We load into the car. "Hows it going Eatons?" Uncle Zeke says as we hop in the huge car, "And Nadia."
"Going just fine. How've you been at the orchards?" I ask. He groans,"Even if they don't use that peace serum bread, everyone here is still too happy."
I laugh,"That's Amity for you." We start towards the orchards, but can't make any conversation because these new vehicles they are using are way too noisy. Instead, I sit quietly, letting my body move with the vibrations of the metal car.
The ride is a while, but I'm so absorbed in relaxation I don't even notice when the car stops. "You're up!" Uncle Zeke says, turning to face us.
"Thanks man. We should meet up again soon." Dad says as he jumps out of the car. Uncle Zeke nods,"Will do." I climb out after Nadia, and the cars clunks away.
"Do you remember where it is?" Mom asks.
I nod, "The tree is halfway through the third row from the back, why?"
"Your father and I are going to go on a different path, you and Nadia meet us at the tree, oh, noon or so?" she suggests.
"Sure." I agree.
Nadia head straight down the path of trees, while Mom and Dad go through another side.
"I wonder what all that was about." Nadia says, swinging on a branch, to get over a big rock on the path.
I shrug,"Not too big of a deal. I trust them,"
She brushes off the thought.
Sweat drops down my forehead as we walk in the torrential heat.
As we swing and kick around on the familiar dirt path, until I notice something. One of the oldest trees, which has been in the orchard for decades, has grown low branches over the path.
"Wanna climb?"I ask, grabbing hold of the branch, testing my weight on it. Nadia shrugs, "Why not?"
I pull myself onto the lowest hanging branch, and swing my leg over. I can just see Dad beginning to breath hard at the sight of the tall tree.
I grab hold of the branch above me, and swing myself up, something I learned in kiddy gymnastics when I was 7 or 8. Nadia climbs onto the branch below me. "Careful. The last thing we need to do is fall and break an arm." she advises.
I roll my eyes, "We'll be fine. After all, we are Dauntless aren't we."
Nadia looks up at me, smiling slyly,"That we are." I move to a flimsier branch beside me, careful to divide my weight. "Careful on this one." I warn Nadia.
She follows in my footsteps as we climb higher onto the tree. Once I get halfway up, the branches begin thinning.
"We'll stop here." I tell Nadia, helping to pull her to a branch beside me.
She puts a hand on her chest, breathing hard,"Good, cause that's as much as I can take!" she exclaims.
I laugh, leaning on the rough trunk of the tree.
Then it happens. I hear a dull crunch, and then the 'snap!' of the branch breaking from beneath me. I scream, the image of the ground 15 feet below me the only thing in my head. The limbs scratching my face, the leaves getting stuck in my hair.
I whip my head back, throwing my hand towards Nadia. "Help! I scream. Without my trying, a vine erupts from my hand, extending to Nadia. She grabs hold of it. I slam to a halt, only 5 feet or so from the ground.
"Ow." I mutter, rubbing my neck. Stopping that fast was not comfortable.
"So that's the powers Mom was talking about!" Nadia exclaims. I roll my eyes,"Well yah."
Before she can remark, the branch under her snaps like a pencil.
I scream again, putting a hand beneath me to try and break the fall.
For some reason, when I land all I feel is cold. Well, until I look up to see Nadia falling on top of me.
I yell,"GET YOUR FAT BUTT OFF ME!", rubbing the arm she landed on.
I look around to see what broke my fall, surprised to see a giant pillow of snow.
"You are like teen Houdini." Nadia says.
I roll my eyes,"Whatever." I help Nadia up, and we stand for a minute, rubbing our sore arms.
"Well... let's not do that again." I insist. "Well no duh!" Nadia laughs. We start down the path again, careful not to trip over the dozens of rocks.
I check my phone,"11:50. We should head over to the tree." I hop over a fallen branch, and turn onto the path Mom and I made years ago.
"How often did you guys come here?" Nadia asks, looking at the trampled dirt path. I shrug,"A lot, I guess."
We don't talk much on the way. We are both mostly focused on not hurting ourselves. The heat is scorching, but I know Mom has the water bottles with her, making me more eager to get there.
By the time we make it to the tree, I'm out of breath. Honestly, I don't know how I ever did it as a toddler. We both sit at the base of the tree, our chests heaving. After a few minutes, I spot Mom and Dad.
I stand up, waving them over.
"Did you guys have fun?" Dad asks, eyeing us. I shrug,"Same old same old."
I notice Mom has a bag, so I grab it for her and set it at the base of the tree. Finally, after drinking plenty of water, we settle down for a quick relaxing moment.
