Chapter 35
Tris POV(Woohoo a change)
Tobias and I lay against one another, watching the television, when his phone goes off.
"Who is it?" I ask, sitting up.
"Natalie, she's with Blake at that water park place." He responds, clicking the button to answer.
"Hey Nat, How's it going?"
I can't hear what she says, but Tobias suddenly screams, "Eric? He hurt our Natalie? Where is she, and where can I beat the shit out of that bastard?"
"What's happening?" I shout, grabbing his arm.
Tobias is breathing hard, stuttering as she says, "Eric, I don't know how, but he followed us here. He snapped a slide and Natalie... she, she fell onto the pavement and she is paralyzed. God Tris what do we do?"
Tears pour from my eyes in seconds, "We have to go to her, Tobias, she must be terrified."
He nods, "I'll get the diaper bag, you and Brutus grab the girls."
I stand up from the couch, rushed. I wake the girls from their nap, and Brutus helps me load them into the car. Tobias gets into the back with me, trying to calm down Eliza and Ashlen.
Brutus speeds down the street, ignoring most of the lights and honks. We assume the police know who we are, because when we drive right past a patrol car, they don't follow us.
The car turns a sharp corner, and it slides into a parking spot. I pick Eliza up straight out of her seat, and climb from the car. Brutus takes the diaper bag, Tobias grabs Ash, and we all run into the ER. There are specific hospitals for Divergents in all of the old experiments, making it easy for us to know where to go.
"Ma'am, Sir, who are you here for?" A nurse stops Tobias from rushing to the elevator.
"Natalie Eaton, where is she?" He shouts, then takes a breath to calm himself.
She looks down, "Oh, that one. She was brought in an hour ago, are you her parents?"
We both respond with a quick, "Yes."
"Alright, well she is in the OR at the moment, but I could bring to the PICU, to where she will be brought post-op." The nurse explains.
"Can we watch from the gal-"
"No, family is not allowed to watch, especially not on such an extensive surgery. You'll have to wait in her room, unfortunately."
I hold back tears, while rocking Ellie back and forth.
"Follow me then."
The nurse takes us through an elevator, that creaks with each floor we ascend. The girls are very fidgety, making it difficult to stay at peace. When we get the fifth floor, she brings us through a maze of halls, into the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
We finally arrive in a large room, with an empty bed. Blake, of course, is sitting on the couch, his hands cradling his head.
"This is the young man who was with her, he was allowed in the room. I'll notify you when Natalie returns to the room."
I sit down beside him, and Eliza reaches out. He looks up, giving both of us a weak smile. He hasn't cried, such a strong young man, but his expression is etched with concern.
"Bak." Eliza mumbles, trying to jump onto Blake.
He laughs quietly, taking her from my arms. She sloppily kisses his cheek, making all of us laugh a little. You try to find little things in a situation like this.
"Do you know how it happened?" Tobias asks, sitting on his other side.
"We were just going down a slide, and she didn't come out of the end. Then the whole thing collapsed, and she fell onto the pavement. It was a blur, I came with her in the ambulance, and they brought me here. There, there was a lot of blood, and her leg, it-it was snapped in half."
----------------------
It's late into the night before someone gently shakes my shoulder. I look up, staring at a nurse.
"They're bringing her up now. The doctor will give you more information." She whispers.
I nod, sitting up from the pull out couch. Brutus and I stayed here, while Tobias took the girls back to the hotel suite until we get an update. There wasn't enough room for six people in one area.
Blake's mom allowed him to stay as well, so it's the three of us in here. Blake gets up, groggily at that, and flips on the lights.
"What did they tell you?" He questions, stretching out his tired muscles.
"She'll be up any minute now, then the doctor will tell us what's going on. Brutus, do me a favor and call Tobias, would you?"
He nods, stepping out of the room. I tuck the couch back into sitting position, and Blake sits beside me.
"How have you not broken down crying yet?" I question, giving him an understanding smile.
He sighs, "I have to be strong, besides, wouldn't that be weird for a teenage dude to break down crying?"
"Not when you've been dating her for so long, no." I admit.
He shakes his head, "I'll be okay, you're her mother. You should be more scared than I am right now."
I laugh, "Blake, I'm terrified out of my mind, I'm just not showing it."
Before another word is said, somebody walks in, propping open the door. A few nurses roll in her bed, and I'm terrified at what I see. Half of Natalie's body is wrapped in casts or bandages, and she has an abundance of machines hooked up, in addition to the IV.
A ventilator...
The doctor arrives, looking at us with looks of pure pity.
I've always hate that expression. Before he can begin speaking, I call Tobias, and he immediately answers.
"I'm only five minutes out, how is she?" He asks.
"I-I..."
"We can wait for your husband to arrive, then I'll give you the report." The doctor says for me.
"Alright, I'll be right there with the girls. Jan, er, Blake's mother is with me."
"Okay, thank you."
He hangs up, and we all wait in agony for his arrival. In the back of my mind I know what the doctor is going to say, that Natalie might not wake up, but somehow, there is hope that maybe this is temporary. That she is okay.
When Tobias finally arrives, he immediately runs to me. Ashlen is in one of his arms, and he hugs me with the other. Jan walks in with Ellie.
"Alright, may I give the report?" The doctor requests.
We all nod.
"To start, I must say, the injuries to Miss. Eaton's body were extensive. She broke four ribs, both legs, her right arm, and her clavicle. There was obvious brain damage, and we repaired what we could. She has underwent extreme trauma, and with her power, the body was healing some of it's own injuries. However, I don't believe it can do all of the work on it's own. We have the IV supplementing her with antibiotics to avoid infection, steroids for swelling, and a few other medications."
"So, she will just have to heal, right?" Tobias ask, grasping at strings.
The doctor let's out a big breath, "Unfortunately, right now, we have no conclusive evidence on when, if, she will wake up."
Everything suddenly blacks out. My body crumples to the ground, heaving with sobs. Tobias leans down, wrapping his arms around me.
Nothing helps.
My own child, is sitting on a bed, helpless. I don't know what to do.
--------------
Natalie's POV
I wake in darkness, my body feeling almost numb. My eyelids try to open, with no success. What is going on? I can feel tubes down my throat, and something in my arm. Nothing hurts, but some feels tightly wrapped.
I hear voices, one I don't recognize.
"We will be able to transport her back to Chicago, with everything hooked up. She can continue treatment there. With some preparation, she can be transported in a week."
I hear painful cries, which only hurts me. Suddenly, someone squeezes my hand, allowing me to feel.
Something prods in my arm, very distinctly. Needles!
That was my first fear. I want to hyperventilate or claw at my arm or something, but my body doesn't let me. Trying my best to ease my mind, I find myself drifting off to sleep, the only place that isn't dark.
