Chapter 27

"Mom, Eliza is hungry!" I yell out, bouncing her while she lays in my arms crying.

"It's okay little one, big sis has got you!" I coo, holding her little hand.

It's three in the morning, so I can hear Mom stumble around the dark apartment to Eliza's room. "What?" She responds groggily.

Eliza starts to stop crying when she sees Mom. She looks bad, dark circles under her eyes, messy hair, and Dad's shirt and some sweat pants on.

She takes Eliza in her arms, doing exactly what I did as she walks out to the kitchen. I go back to my room, and try to go back to sleep. Unsuccessfully.

I sit up, and grab my phone. After I wake up in the middle of the night, I can never really get back to bed. I see if I have any notifications, and lucky for me, ten minutes ago Blake texted asking if I was up.

Hey Nat. Can't sleep. U up?

Yeah, Eliza was screaming, what's up?

Mom and I got into a fight, just a little stressed. Wanna go hang out by the chasm?

Sure, meet u in fifteen?

Yeah

I put down my phone, and quietly go over to my closet to see what I can put together. I find a white tank top and some ripped denim shorts. I put on my black sneakers and quietly leave. To my luck, Mom has already gotten Eliza back in bed.

I grab my key and phone and open the door, carefully slipping out. I walk as quietly as I can through the compound, so I don't wake anybody up. The sound of crashing water against rocks because louder as I approach.

I get to the bridge, feeling the splashes of water over me. I sit at the edge of the unrailed part of the bridge, getting soaked in the spray.

"Natalie?" Blake says from behind me, almost making me slip off.

I stumble, standing up, "Hey babe."

He gives me a hug, and I squeeze him tightly.

"How have the twins been?" He asks when I pull away.

I shrug, "They are literally a week old, they cry, eat, sleep and poop. That's about it."

He laughs, "They are still your sisters."

"And of course I love them. Besides me, what were you and your Mom fighting about?"

Blake gets a little angry, "She got mad because I hadn't told her I developed another power, so now I have Earth, Fire, and Ice. She thought if I would have told her then we would be living in the new DPA safety house."

I shake my head, "She shouldn't have gotten mad. We all have guards now anyways, and Jeanine's dead."

We both sit down on the edge of the bridge again. I lean on his shoulder, and he keeps his arm around mine.

"Natalie?"

"Yeah?"

"Can you freeze the chasm?"

I shoot my head up, laughing, "What?"

"Can you. Freeze. The. Chasm."

I have no idea why he even thought of this, but whatever.

"It would take both of us, but probably. Why?"

He shrugs, laughing, "It would be funny for people to wake up to it frozen."

"I mean, this is Dauntless. My Uncle Zeke and Uriah would probably slip, but I guess we could make railings." I say, looking around.

"Well, let's do it then." Blake stands up, and pulls me up as well.

We both stand towards the waterfall, and focus. My hands are both extended towards the rushing water, and we both try. Freeze

In seconds, the whole chasm is frozen. It is so weird, droplets are stopped mid air and fall to the bottom, and everything is frozen at rounded points.

"That is so cool!" I say, reaching out to touch one of the icicles.

Blake grabs my waist to keep me from falling over. They are so rough, and it looks amazing.

"Come on, how are we making a rail?" I ask, leaning back.

Blake waves his hand, making a short wooden barrier. It is about to my waist, and is really just a tangle of branches. "Perfect." I say, running my hand along the edge.

"Hey, who's over there?" Somebody yells from the other side.

I look over at Blake, fighting off a fit of giggles.

"RUN!" We both scream in unison.

I laugh hysterically, running as fast as I can. Blake grabs my hand to help me keep up, and we go running to the apartments. Slowly, the footsteps behind us die out, and we slow down.

I turn through a corner and we slip behind a wall. I catch my breath, still laughing. My hand is on my chest, breathing deeply.

"That was amazing." Blake says, squeezing my hand.

I smile, looking over at him, "Yes, it was."

My hand slips into my pocket, pulling out my phone. "It's only 3:45, do you want to go do something else?" I ask.

Blake shrugs, "Do you think anyone would care if we went up to jump the net?"

I shake my head, "As long as we are quiet, I wouldn't think so."

"Then let's go!" He says, and grabs my hand.

We run through the halls, light on our feet, and avoid the chasm. My feet start a steady rhythm as we go up the stairs.

"How many more levels?" I complain, my legs getting sore. Sometimes I think the compound is too big, but really it's just the way I like it.

"Oh don't be such a buzzkill, we have gone up here dozens of times." Blake says, punching my shoulder.

I speed up a little, seeing the moonlight at the top of the exit. I take a breath of the fresh air, and look at the gravel rooftop. All I can think off is the story Mom told me, of when they had a group of initiates that had to jump off the roof. She was the last one anyone expected to be first jumper, but she was. When she got to the bottom of the net, that was the first moment she met Dad.

"Natalie, I have a question." Blake asks, pulling me towards the opposite side of the roof.

"What?"

"Do you want to ride the train all the way around?" He asks.

I shrug, "Maybe, it's almost four, would we have enough time?"

"It is two hours all around, and we can tell our parents we went for an early morning workout."

It would be incredibly fun to have some alone time with Blake, and to see all of Chicago at night. I have never rode the train through the whole city before, so it would be amazing to see.

"You know what? Let's do it, we've got nothing to lose." I say, going over to the edge by the train.

Blake smiles, "I've always wanted to do this." his hand slips into mine.

The train comes every even numbered hour on the hour, so we got lucky on timing. I begin to hear the familiar rumble of the tracks as it approaches, and ready myself. It approaches quickly, and we run along the limited roof space. The sound explodes in my ears as I speed alongside it.

With a swift jump, I manage to get in, and Blake seconds after me. It is such an odd feeling being in the train car with nobody else, let alone at Four in the morning.

(Honest mistake but I am keeping it as Four)

I know there is a chance of falling off, but I still sit on the edge of the door, clutching the wall. Blake goes and sits beside me, his arm so long he can grab the wall from behind me. I lean my head on his shoulder, watching as the buildings thin out.

The twinkling lights disperse, creating a dim, moonlit scene. In front of us now lays thousands of crushed buildings, concrete and metal sticking out like blades from the ground. It still makes anyone feel uneasy, not knowing what caused such destruction.

The wind begins to pick up little by little, the train speeding up. My long brown hair begins to whip around, hitting both of us in the face. I laugh as some of it gets caught in Blake's mouth, and he spits to get it out.

I take the hair tie off of my wrist, and put my wild hair in a messy bun. "I don't understand how girls even take care of that." Blake says, pushing a fly-away from my face.

I look up to him, smiling, "Well, Blake, there are certain talents and abilities only women possess, and there are many. One of those abilities, is being able to grow out our hair while still keeping it healthy. Really, our secret is magic, but don't tell anyone."

He looks confused, "Wait, seriously?"

I burst into a fit of giggles, "No you dipshit, it's called washing and brushing your hair."

Blake's cheeks flush, and he looks down, "Geez I am an idiot."

I nod, still grinning, "Yes, yes you are."

He turns his head back to where we were, looking out the city. I can tell we are coming around Amity, because the buildings are gone, and trees have begun to pop up across the land in front of us. They begin to thicken into forests, forming a beautiful landscape.

From this far away, it looks like a painting, fruit filled trees scattered around with blooming patches of flowers weaving through them. Chicago really has become a gorgeous city, filled different unique places and perfect people.

Slowly, the beautiful Amity land disappears, like it was never even there. Now, the Chicago University comes into view. It was remodeled and brought up from rubble, so kids from after The War can go there. Sometimes kids work here after they graduate, sometimes they choose to leave the Chicago Experiment and go to other inhabited parts of our country.

"Do you want to leave or stay after we go there?" Blake asks, making me turn towards him.

I smile, "I would have to stay here, my family and friends are here. Not to mention, there are not that many experiments outside of Chicago that are very appealing to live in. I considered Orlando, but there wouldn't be any snow or leaves falling, which is something I love about Chicago."

Blake agrees, "Of course, we have lived our whole lives here, I would never leave."

I snuggle closer to him, watching as it passes. The lights of Chicago are beginning to return to our vision, but it is the opposite side of where we started.

I shift back into a safer area, and pull out my phone to check the time. It's already 5:00, which means Dad will be up soon. I text him so he doesn't freak out.

Hey Dad, I don't know when u will b up, but I went on an early morning run, ily!

I set my phone down for seconds before he texts me back, but I am not surprised.

Thanks for telling me little one, b home by 7

I turn off my phone and slip it back in my pocket, then go back to the entrance to watch. Blake holds my shoulder tightly, while I put my arm back around the wall.

Rubble has returned once more in front of us, but this time, it's a whole different section of buildings. I can feel little drops of water begin to come down from the sky.

"Come on, let's go in a little farther." I say, backing up into the train car.

Blake scoots back inward, and the rain begins to come down harder. It creates a loud rhythm on the roof, and I enjoy the music. It starts to smell like wet concrete. I've always loved that scent, it reminds me of downtown Chicago. Sometimes, as a family, we would walk through the streets, shopping at the repaired shops citizens of Chicago ran. There, we would see people from all of the factions, or at least, people who lived lives of other factions.

This aroma fills me with comfort, love. It is the aroma that came from spending time as a family, on those rainy days here.

I spot the Merciless Mart, approaching us, That's where all of the Candor live. Aunt Christina used to be in Candor, before everything happened. It is huge, and everybody in their faction lived in the Merciless Mart. They valued honesty, so I know I would have never been Candor.

Once we have made it past, I see The Hub coming up. It is the tallest building in Chicago. Mom and I used to climb up to the top as a workout, that was so fun. We would run through the room where the choosing ceremonies used to be, playing games.

Right now, the rain makes the whole Hub glisten, making it seem like a dream. "It's beautiful." I sigh, my eyes scanning every sparkle.

Blake smiles, putting a hand around my waist, "Much like someone else I know."

I laugh, playfully slapping his arm, "You are such a cheese ball Blake."

He grins, "I know, but I am your cheese ball."

I can't help but let my cheeks flush just the slightest, Blake always makes me feel loved.

We start talking, bringing up everything, anything on our minds. We only stop when I see the familiar rooftops leading to the entrance.

"Come on Blake, we have to jump."

The rain is pouring insanely, so we are no doubt going to be soaked. Now, I know it is about six, since we are about to jump, so maybe I could slip into the apartment without Mom noticing.

"Are you ready Natalie?" Blake asks, grabbing my hand.

I breath deeply, "As always."

It approaches, and this time, with no hesitation, I go running and jump. For once, my feet land steadily on the gravel. My hair is already dripping with rain, and the drops fall in my eyes.

I take my hair out, shaking it like a dog. Blake walks over to me, laughing. "You think I could do that?"

He shakes his hair, barely getting a few drops to come out of his own. I laugh ruffling his hair.  My white tank top is see through now, soaked in water. Luckily, I still have on a sports bra or that would be awkward.

"Come on, we need to jump." He says, grabbing my hand.

I can barely tell what's happening, but we run to the ledge, barely getting a foothold before flying off of the edge. I scream and laugh, still holding Blake's hand. The wind flows against my skin, but is no match for the water covering my body.

We slam into the net at the same time, both laughing hysterically. I look over to him, my smile wide. The next moment is insane, but it is burned in my memory. There, soaked, laughing like idiots, he kisses me.

I kiss him back, and it's short and sweet. That makes it even harder to wipe this smile off of my face.

"We should... get back." I mumble, grinning like an idiot.

I slip off the side, Blake close behind. He grabs my face, and kisses me again. This time, I don't hesitate to kiss back.

He pulls back, smiling, "You are something, Natalie Rose."

I laugh, turning away, "So are you."

We walk back wordlessly, wet, and getting weird stares from the Dauntless walking by.

We come to my apartment first, "That was so fun, Blake. We should do that again sometime."

He smiles, and gives a kiss on the cheek before walking off. I pull out my key, and my phone, thank god for waterproof cases, and quietly unlock the door.

I breath out a sigh of relief, seeing all of the lights are turned off. I quietly close the door, and sneak to my bedroom. The whole apartment is silent, which is weird because I would have expected the girls to wake up Mom by now.

I grab some clothes, and go into the bathroom. I take off my freezing, wet clothes, and start a warm shower. My body slips in, relaxing at the feeling of warm water against my chilled skin.

Once I am washed off, I dry off and put my wet hair in a bun. I put on some black leggings and a loose grey sweatshirt, something comfortable.

I grab my phone and walk to the kitchen. Inevitably, my sisters will wake up soon, so I start on Mom and I's breakfast. I pull out some pans, and cook up some eggs and bacon. I set out two plates, and fill them up. Lastly, bottles of milk are set in warm water, to warm up for the girls.

I go over to Mom's room, and gently shake her shoulder, "Mom, I made some breakfast." My voice is hushed.

She wakes slowly, blinking before focusing on me, "Morning Nat, what did you say?"

"I made some breakfast, and I'm heating some milk for Ash and Ellie." I say, pulling her blanket off.

She laughs, sitting up, "Go get Ellie, and I'll get Ashlen."

I walk over to Eliza's room, seeing she is wide awake. She is looking around the room, wiggling her little arms and legs.

I grab a blanket, and pick her up. She smiles lightly, making gurgling noises. "Did you sleep well little one?" I coo, holding her close.

She blows bubbles, making me laugh.

Mom meets me in the kitchen, and she is feeding Ash with one arm while eating bacon with the other.

I laugh, joining her, "Queen of multitasking, I see."

She gives me a sweet smile, "Of course."

I end up doing the same, really hungry after an active morning. "So, how was your morning? Dad told me that you went on an early morning run."

I shrug, "Uneventful, really. Just a normal jog aro-"

I am cut off by Dad running through the door, out of breath, "Somebody froze the whole entire chasm!"

Uh oh.
