Chapter 19
I wake up to the wretched noise of my alarm clock. Reluctantly, I slam my hand on the snooze button and sit up, stretching.
Today I am planning on getting to the gym early, before the big morning rush. I grab a muffin and scarf it down, before going into my bathroom to get ready.
I brush my teeth, don't bother with makeup(Don't tell Nadia!), and pull my hair into a ponytail. Then, I put on a black sports bra, black gym shorts with a white stripe on the sides, and white tenneshoes. I grab my gym bag, and put my phone, towel, water bottle, and extra clothes into it.
It is 7:30, so I nudge Dad and tell him I am leaving to go to the gym. He mumbles,"That's fine, just be back for lunch."
I walk out, and find my way back to the familiar gym. Apparently my plan to come early worked, because there is only 3 other people in here.
I grab a key from the front desk for a locker, and pull out my phone and earbuds before shoving my back into it.
I go over to the treadmill, and set my phone on the stand. I put in my earbuds and put on music from one of favorite old musicals, Hamilton.
I start the treadmill on a lower setting, and slowly work my way up. I hum along to the music, focusing on the rhythm of my feet.
I make my way to 15 mph, my legs starting to burn. I keep going for another 10 minutes before stopping. My breathing is hard, and I go to my locker to wipe the sweat from my forehead.
I take a huge drink if my water, and check the time. I have been on the treadmill for 30 minutes, time to switch to something else.
"Nat?" I hear from behind me.
Blake stands there with a goofy grin on his face.
"Hey Blake! How's it going?" I ask, smiling awkwardly.
"Better now that you showed up!" He responds, chuckling.
I feel my cheeks blush, and look down. "Um, you wanna sit down?"
"Sure, they have a rest area over here." He says, bringing my through a door. There are a few tables, some water fountains, and a few shelves with energy bars.
"So, how are your parents?" He asks, pulling out a seat for me. I sit down, a little embarrassed I am sweaty and probably need another layer of deodorant.
"Pretty good, after I left it turned out my Mom is having twins!" I respond excitedly.
"Really? That's amazing!" He says, his eyes lighting up.
"Ehem?" Someone clears their throat.
I look over to see my Mom, with her arms crossed and tapping her foot.
"Oh, hey Mom." I say, waving.
"So what's this, are you two like, a thing?" She asks.
I giggle like a maniac, and my cheeks would put tomatoes to shame,"Uh, just good friends."
Blake scratches the back of his neck, glancing at nothing in particular.
"What do you need?" I ask.
"I was just coming over here to tell you that we are having lunch at Aunt Chrissy and Uncle Will' s apartment today with the gang. Bring your, "friend" if you want!" She says, making air quotes.
I roll my eyes,"Ok, you could've just texted me you know."
"I know, but I am your mother and I was coming here to check on you. Eat something when you are done here."
"Ok, thanks, bye."
Mom smirks, before walking off.
"That was...honestly...awkward he says, laughing.
"I know, that's my mother for you." I giggle.
"So, how is your family?" I ask.
"Um... my mother is recovering from amnesia and my dad is still missing." He says.
I gasp,"That's awful! How have you been dealing with that?"
"My mom isn't so bad, she is remembering little by little. My Dad and I weren't very close, he and my Mom got divorced when I was young, so I didn't see him much. I am still sad though." His face goes from awkwardly adorable to pure devastation.
My face is red and splotchy, and I am on the verge of crying. Being as young as we are, and having to go through that? I can only imagine how awful je must feel.
"I..I.."
He stops me,"Please, it's ok. Just think about something else."
I rub my eyes, and swallow the lump in my throat,"Um, ok, who is the divergent in your family?"
He grins,"That would be me."
He spins his finger over my head, making it snow on my hair. I rather enjoy since I am still hot.
"A flower, m'lady." He jokes, forming a rose in his hand.
I giggle, "Thank you."
"So, what can you do?" He asks, as he creates a daisy to put in my hair.
"Well...there are more than two, actually." I mumble, fiddling with my fingers.
"How does that work?" He asks, looking perplexed.
"I don't know but," I throw a snowball at him, making him laugh. Then I blow him back a few feet. I toss out a couple of vines and pull him back to me, and then burn them up.
His face is priceless, "What in the hell..."
I laugh, pulling him up by his arm, "Come on, I need someone to lift weights with."
------------------------------------------------------
I laugh, as he trips over his shoe and falls against the wall.
"Your legs can't feel that bad! It was only 30 minutes on the elliptical!" I giggle, pulling him up.
We finally left the gym, and I am going to drop him off at his apartment so he can change, I am going to shower and change and then we are going to lunch with Aunt Christina and Uncle Will.
"Ok, it was because I went on a run around the compound this morning, but it was still a long time." He says, laughing.
I grin, "Fine, go home, I am gonna go get dressed and we can meet in front of our apartment."
He walks down his hall, and I go back home. I unlock the door and step inside. Mom is asleep on the couch, and Dad is microwaving a bunch of leftover pizza from the cafeteria.
"Hey sweetie, how was your workout?" He asks, a hint of annoyance in his voice.
"Fine, why do you ask?" I respond, walking up to him.
"I heard you were talking to a boy?"
"And?" I say, rolling my eyes.
"Have I met him?" He says, glaring at me.
"We met at the divergent club, he is super nice and adorable. Can you leave me in peace?" I say, taking a piece of his pizza.
"I think you should go get ready. We will talk about this later." He says, taking the rest away.
I ignore him, and go to my room. I grab some clothes, and hop in the shower. The warm water soothes my sore muscles. I lather up my messy hair, and wash off with lavender body wash.
When I get out, I put on a black sports bra and underwear, and start to blow dry my hair. I find my hair straightener while it dries. When I am done, I part my hair on the middle, and straighten it, and I put it in a half-up half-down look.
Finally, I get dressed. Since we are just with friends, I put on a black sleeveless crop top, and white skinny jeans. I put on some old black shoes, that were popular before the war. I think they are called, 'Converse'
Finally, I head into the living room, and sit beside Mom.
"Come, let's go!"
