No Peeking (#remind)
A/N: Desperate for inspiration after not coming up with an idea for 'remind' after 48 hours I turned to story cubes. And by story cubes I mean an app with story dice because I was out walking and wanted to use the right away. The following story solidified in my mind within five minutes.
______________________
Benny awoke with a start, when the cigarette burnt a hole through his trousers and scorched his leg. He swore, picked up the offending butt and took a drag off of it before stubbing it out in the overflowing ashtray. His head was spinning. He had to remind himself why he was sitting behind the wheel of his car parked outside of the Sapphire Lounge. He glanced over at the shady establishment. Music drifted out from the open door. Ladies in very short miniskirts and extremely high heels giggled as the muscled bouncer ushered them in.
Benny glanced to his right and the briefcase sitting on the passenger seat quickly reoriented him.
Why do I always fuck things up? Benny asked himself. And why did I agree to do another job for Harry?
The answer to the second question was clear. Benny was broke and Harry's jobs, though dangerous, paid handsomely.
The first question though, Benny knew he would never find the answer to. He hiccuped and put the key in the ignition despite the fact that the entire dashboard seemed off kilter. But he paused before turning the key and attempting to drive the goods to the next drop off. He thought back to a few hours earlier.
"Whatever you don't look inside," the goon had said when he handed Benny the briefcase. Benny nodded. The goon took this as an affirmative and slipped out of the dimly lit booth and disappeared. Benny put the briefcase next beside him on the plastic leather seat. It felt too light for cash or even drugs, and it emitted a faint unpleasant odor. The waitress came by and he ordered another cocktail. No need to rush off and draw attention to himself. He ordered another, and another pondering what could possibly be in the suitcase.
Now alone in his car, his curiosity burnt a hole in his mind like the cigarette had in his pants.
He lit himself another smoke and stared at the briefcase for a few more minutes. Who cares if I know what is in it? he thought. I'm just making a drop and then I'll never see it again. He knew wouldn't dare take any money or drugs from Harry. So why had he specifically told him not to look?
Screw you Harry, he thought and flicked open the latches of the briefcase. Benny heard a quick movement behind him. As the briefcase sprung open Benny swung around and came face to face with the goon who held a brink in his hand.
"No peeking," he said as he slammed the brick into Benny's forehead.
Benny saw stars and then everything went black. He slumped forward onto his steering wheel, cigarette still dangling from his lips.
