Chapter 13

"Everyone, listen to me, your Alpha! Get back to your rooms and houses! Protect yourselves! We must keep you all safe! Disperse!" He roared. Everybody scattered and left the training grounds as soon as the words left his mouth.

When they were departed, I noticed that we were the only ones who were left here. I spun to face him. I didn't want to leave him. This was a lot to take in, and I'm pretty sure he's tense.

"What are you looking at? Go!" He snapped at me, but I just shook my head.

"I'm not leaving without you." I spoke softly. I don't know how to say this but something made me want to stay with him as of the moment. It feels like he needed comfort.

"Just go back to the pack house. Please. I- I'll follow you." He spoke much more softly this time.

My eyes widened when I heard him plead. I don't know Nolan yet that much but I knew he wasn't the on for beseeching. This was my first time hearing him say please and it felt foreign to my ears.

He rarely says that, no doubt I will follow him.

And with that said, I can't dispute with him anymore. Sighing, I nodded my head and agreed with him. So, I ran back to the pack house.

As I entered the very house, everything and everyone was in chaos. The disorder and the commotion seen was plainly a sight for sore eyes.

Everybody was yelling, crying, and of course, asking and demanding answers. The outcry of our packs was causing uproar and anarchy.

They knew that the higher ranking wolves don't even know what to do yet. We can't think of a plan, much less formulate it.

From the mind link of the whole pack, I heard Nolan speak. "Pack meeting! All wolves with positions must be present when I enter the conference room. So, go there right now!"

With those words said, I sprinted to the conference room speedily. I might not have the position of a higher wolf but I needed to know what's happening. Plus, who's to say I don't have a ranking? I was the Alpha's daughter for crying out loud.

But even that wasn't the case.

My wolf was apprehensive today.

Something was bothering her since the moment we crossed the threshold of the training grounds. She just kept on stirring inside of me, anxious of what's to come. My wolf believed that something bad was going to happen. Far more badly than the menace that happened earlier.

But I agreed with her. I had a bad feeling about this.

As I entered the conference room, I see the Betas, Gammas, and pack fighters of our packs, seated neatly in place. Our forces seemed to be in a heated discussion. I silently closed the door and took my seat on the office chair.

Everyone was silent when Nolan held out a hand.

My ex-mate's back was turned against us. The sun was hitting his face as it had cast a dark shadow behind him. He looked dominant and leading, yet in deep thought.

He spoke.

"You all know who's behind this, am I correct?"

There was a chorus of 'Yes'.

"The rogues, Alpha." One combatant of his pack spoke.

"Correct." He nodded.

"Benjamin has been after my pack and I for a long time now. He wants vengeance too." He whispered quietly but of course everyone in the room heard it.

"Why is he after your pack?" I heard myself probing and people spun around to face me. I couldn't help my inquisitiveness. Curse my senseless mouth.

He hit his fist on the wooden table, and I jumped from the loud sound.

"Well, why are you even here first?" He questioned back, completely ignoring my question.

"She has the right to be here." My brother said, defending me.

"Why is that? She isn't a female Beta nor a Gamma so what privileges do you think she has? I don't think she should be here, present, at all." My ex-mate glowered at my direction.

Why is he always acting like this? You think I should get used to it by now but I can't! He is just so unclear than the mysterious riddles of the world.

And you know what, it hurt me a lot too if I must say. Especially my wolf. Does he not see me worthy of a rank? Why am I still feeling this? Maybe the bond was never broken?

But that was irrational and impossible; I felt the agony and the discomfort of heartache. I felt anguish and distress of despondency.

Maybe my wolf and I were just clinging to the tight thread that connects our bond. Or maybe there was no connection left at all yet the damned feelings remain.

"Alpha Blackwell, that's my daughter you are talking to. She must be here for she might be a potential Luna to another Alpha." My father growled.

Nolan just gave him a dirty look.

Nope. No more Alphas for me. I shook my head.

One pain in the arse like him is enough to give aspirin a headache.

My wolf felt really upset and peeved by his words; he was humiliating and belittling me in front of our own packs.

"With all due respect, Alpha Nolan, I do have Alpha blood in me. I may not be the impending Alpha of my pack but I still have the blood and the genetic factor." I said, emphasizing the word 'Alpha' with disgust. If he doesn't treat me with respect then I certainly would not even bother showing respect to him as well.

"If my brother ever passed away, which I hope not, I could still take over as an Alpha female if I want to. So please respect me as a lady with a higher ranking, as an Alpha's daughter, or even respect me as a pack member who just wants to protect the pack that she grew up with."

I glared at him and he scowled back.

Tension filled the air instantly and I was left doubting. Everyone was so noiseless too that you could hear the pin drop if that ever happened. Yes, the stiffness still consumed the air we were breathing to the point of discomfort.

All the combatants and units looked at us; basically, looked at me then back at Nolan. Back and forth.

'You go girl! Show them our strong suit!' My inner wolf cheered.

Then my thoughtless brother spoke.

"Hey, I'm not going to pass away soon! You won't ever get the Alpha position." He pointed at me and I rolled my eyes at him. Of course I wouldn't dream of taking it from him. He was older and apparently his stupid arse is the rightful heir to the alpha position.

Evangeline smacked him in the head.

Thank you, Eva.

Did I mention that she was here because she was already introduced as the future Luna of my pack?

"She was stating a fact! Dumbarse!" Eva turned to look at us, giving me a sympathetic smile, "Anyway, please continue."

Gamma Julian spoke, "Moving on, the question is, how were they able to get into our territory undetected by our guards?"

"We are one of the most potent packs in America and it's a shame how some insignificant rogues came into our territory without being seen by our lookouts."

All and sundry was wondering and was currently at deep thought about that.

Yes, how indeed?

We are in two powerful packs and we should not ever let our guards down. Not even a tiny bit.

"Maybe there's a conspirator or traitor in the pack?" Beta Mason suggested. That could be an option but I doubt. No one really looked suspicious or fishy anyway. And frankly, I knew the actual answer too.

"That, or maybe they were practicing magic." I spoke.

They looked at me like I've grown two heads. I knew it sounds impossible or the fact that the words itself are very odd to hear but it is true. I am confident with my answer but no doubt our forces don't believe me.

"Are you bluffing? Magic does not exist anymore. It's completely ancient!" Gamma Pearson said in disbelief.

I glanced at Nolan, yet he shrugged and turned away. He obviously knew this wasn't true for he was friends with a wizard. Remember, Rohan?

"It does! I think that they were making a liquid potion to hide their scents."

Some of the elders were at thought when I told them this.

"If a magic like that exists, then who wields it?" Gamma Julian mocked me. I felt taunted and ridiculed but I wouldn't let his senseless words get to me.

"Benjamin of course." I stated obviously. He was in fact the leader and the frontrunner that was behind all of this.

"What? This is ridiculous and absurd! Your words are completely silly and ludicrous. Benjamin is a werewolf and werewolves like us do not yield magic. Alpha Nolan was correct. Maybe you should just leave and let the men handle this." One pack warrior of Nolan's pack said.

Are they trying to tick me off?

He went to speak out again but I held up my hand and cut him off.

"Magic so does exist! If werewolves exist, then believe me, all those fucking magic spells, charms, and potions are real as well."

"How?" He smirked.

How dare he mock and test me?

"Benjamin is a half enchanter and a half werewolf offspring. Someone in their family was mated to a witch. And their bloodline continues till present time." I said through clenched teeth.

"And may I ask, how do you know that?" Aiden questions me because even if we were siblings I knew he was still uncertain.

I just shrugged casually.

"Alpha Matthew communicated with me. I thought I had the duty to share it with you people." I stated nonchalantly. I then looked at the pack warrior that requested me to leave.

Glaring at him, I spoke,

"And you tell me to go? Unbelievable."

"You know Alpha Matthew Holloway?"

I rolled my eyes but nodded anyway.

I did remember our unusual encounter.

"She does know a lot and has more knowledge of our condition. Why don't you stay dear? It will aid us in our needs and be valuable to us a lot." The Gamma of my pack said.

"Thank you." I said and bowed my head in respect. At least someone understands me.

"As I was saying, they must have used a mystic potion to hide their trail, which is why they were able to deliver their message earlier. Do you know what is says?"

"We all read it but nobody seems to get the riddle."

I just nodded my head in understanding. Then people tried giving responses and answers to the said puzzle, but it just won't add up!

Damn it let me try.

Bigger when you feed, weaker when you drink...

What is that?

What gets greater when you feed it will its goods, and weaker when it is expose to water?

And when you think of it, riddles usually talk about simple things yet they are disguised and hidden by those puzzling words.

Damn it, I really detest conundrums. But I actually enjoyed learning this topic in 1st grade. On how to resolve and unlock riddles, I mean.

I repetitively read the lines a few more times until little by little; I was beginning to comprehend what it is.

Like an apple fell unto my head, I almost screamed 'Eureka!'

It took me a while to process that baffling riddle but thank the moon goddess that I get it now.

Well, at least I think I know.

I raised my hand in a respectable way, waiting for the higher ups to notice me.

"Yes, Avalynn, do you have something to say?" My father asks me. Then general public started looking at me too.

I nodded my head.

My father motioned me to continue.

"If I may, I think the answer is fire." I answered.

No one said a word after that. I guess they were still processing it.

"How so?" Mason commented, really impressed that I was able to come up with an answer. Even I, myself, was proud of that.

I straightened my back and fixed my posture for they might not take me seriously if I acted in a childish manner. Plus, it gives me a certain governing, or a dominant feeling too if I must say.

"Well for instance, it says if you feed it, it will grow. In comparison to fire, if you actually feed it with chemicals, it will spread and rise. If you pour water over it, it will deteriorate or practically burn out. And lastly, if you touch it, you will get scorched so you can only stay back and watch it in a certain distance." I explained calmly, slyly smirking on the inside.

I thank my English class for teaching me how to unearth puzzling riddles.

I watched as their jaws dropped open. Am I right or am I right? I should give myself a pat on the back for this.

"Brilliant! I get it now! And it makes perfect sense. It is fire!" My father remarked.

"Good work, my daughter." He nods proudly.

I saluted back with a smile.

"Thank you, father." I bow my head to him in respect.

At least the first of our many problems is resolved already. We just have to uncover why they actually sent this riddle.

"So what about it? What could fire mean?" Nolan snaps angrily.

Unbelievable. He was still rude and inpatient as ever.

It's not like I know. We just conveyed the secret message a few seconds ago.

"Maybe-" Mason starts first.

Then, a very brash and loud explosion was heard from the outside. In fright, I instantaneously stood up from my seat. The outburst flared up immeasurably from the detonation.

Uh-oh, it can't be!

"That fire?" Mason says sheepishly as he pointed through the door.

No shit, Mason. No shit.
