chapter twelve

Kill the magician.

Wanda woke up in a cold sweat when she remembered the Light's newest orders, heart pumping fast in her chest. She got out of bed and paced the floor, replaying the interaction in her mind.

"Child, we have come with your newest mission." Wanda held back the eye roll, turning to face the adults from her seated position on her bed. "We need you to kill the magician."

Wanda felt her heart stop, her mouth going dry. "W-what? Why her?"

Psimon smirked, crossing his arms over his chest. "She is getting too close to you, she may catch on before we desire her to."

"I can handle it, just like I handled the Martian." Wanda all but pleaded.

"It must be done, she is making you soft, weak. The magician must die by your hands. Or, would you rather we kill your brother?" Psimon grinned evily.

Wanda was torn. She knew she couldn't kill Zatanna, but if she didn't at least make it look that way, Pietro was as good as dead...

Wanda steeled her gaze. "Spare my brother, I'll do it."

Queen Bee smiled maliciously, patting Wanda's head. "We knew you would see reason. Make haste, we have big plans coming and this must be out of the way."

Wanda nodded, letting the two adults fade from her head. She glared at the wall, throwing a burst of psionic energy at it out of frustration.

How was she going to get out of this one?

Wanda shook her head to clear it of the memory from a few days ago. Deciding to make her way to the lounge, Wanda pulled on a hoodie and hugged it tight around her body. She padded into the lounge, taking a seat on the couch and turning the TV on to the news.

She vaguely paid attention as the reporter talked about the string of robberies that was plaguing the city, getting distracted by the sound of talking coming from down the hall. She tuned into that, ignoring the news when she heard her name mentioned.

"-Wanda would never do that." A voice that was definitely Zatanna spoke up. "I keep telling you all that, why won't you listen?"

"Z, you're biased. She's your girlfriend, of course you wouldn't want to see the truth." Dick spoke up.

"Oh yeah? And what 'truth' is that?" Zatanna countered.

"Wanda can not be trusted." An indignant noise came from Zatanna at Jason's words. "She led me into a trap and messed with M'gann's mind, Zatanna! Something is not right with her."

"We have no proof of these ac-"

"Z, please, I know when my minds been messed with, and seeing as Wanda is the only other telepath around, it must be her. I'm not sure why she messed with my mind, I just know that she did." M'gann sighed, making panic shoot through Wanda.

Wanda let out a little squeak, turning the volume up on the television as the group made their way closer, trying to feign innocence when they entered the room. She glanced up at them, eyebrows furrowing when she saw the pinched anger on Zatanna's face. The magician huffed, sending a glare at their team before sitting next to Wanda, wrapping her arms around her and placing a kiss on her temple, eyeing the team the whole time.

Wanda turned to her in confusion. "What has you so angry?"

Zatanna glared harder at the team. "Nothing, just a little misunderstanding, that's all."

Wanda nodded, looking back over at the team, who all had mixed expressions ranging from guilt to annoyance to suspicion. She forced herself to keep looking at them, knowing if she averted her eyes they would sense that she had been listening in.

The team broke apart, heading about their daily lives. Wanda cuddled into Zatanna, trying not to ruminate on her mission when an idea struck her. She grabbed Zatanna's hand and pulled her along to the mission room, Zatanna just looking at her in mild amusement.

Once they entered the room, Wanda spun around. "Have you ever flown before? Not including aircrafts."

"No, can't say that I have. Why?"

Wanda smirked. "Well, there is a first time for everything."

She took a few steps back, aiming her hand at Zatanna and watching her energy encase the magician, lifting her into the air. Zatanna let out a little giggle, looking down as she floated higher in the air, surrounded by the scarlet hues.

"This is so cool!" Zatanna shouted, completely unaware of Wanda's true motive.

Wanda grinned up at her, gently gliding her through the air, all the while mentally picturing Zatanna choking on the magic. She knew it was messed up, but she had to do it in order to feign a memory to use for the Light. With Jason, it had been easier, having the memory of the exploded warehouse and Jason's battered body already there. All she had to do was combine them in her head, ultimately tricking the Light. But with Zatanna, she didn't even want to think about putting her in harms way, so she did this instead.

Satisfied that she had enough fake footage of Zatanna's death, she lowered her back to the ground, Zatanna beaming the whole time. She ran up to Wanda and wrapped her in her arms, soft laughs escaping her. "Thank you, thank you, thank you! That was awesome."

Wanda grinned back, slipping her hand into Zatanna's and giving her a gentle squeeze. "Of course, I just want to make you happy." And keep you alive. She pushed that thought out of her head, kissing Zatanna's cheek. "Come on, let's see if the team is up for some sparring."

The two wandered off into the cave, hand in hand, the darker haired one completely unaware of her girlfriend's mental actions as Wanda preemptively sent the Light the faked mental footage of Zatanna's 'death'.

It wasn't until halfway through the sparring session that she got a reply.

Nice work. In two weeks time, we are having a meeting on Santa Prisca. You will be in attendance.

Wanda sent them the confirmation that she would sneak away from the team to meet them, her heart fluttering at their reply.

You might even get to see your dear Pietro, we are feeling generous and you have done fantastic work.

Wanda couldn't help the grin that wormed its way onto her face as she watched Kaldur and Conner train. She would finally be able to see her brother after all these years.

She just hoped he would want to see her.
