chapter nine

The rest of the flight was tense, the only talking was when Wanda updated M'gann on Jason's location.

They entered Ethiopian airspace and Wanda directed them to where she 'sensed' Jason and his mom. They came upon a warehouse, dropping the bioship and walking the rest of the way on foot.

"Why would Jason meet his mother in a sketchy warehouse in the middle of nowhere?" Conner grumbled.

"Who knows?" Dick snapped, glaring at Wanda.

Wanda froze, eyes going wide. "Somethings wrong."

"What? What do you mean?"

Wanda shook her head, pushing her way through the group and running towards the building. "Something is very wrong."

The team all exchanged a look before sprinting after Wanda. They followed her into the warehouse, everyone but Wanda gasping at the sight before them.

Jason was tied up, bruised and bloody, with his mother tied up in the corner. A crowbar lay on the ground a few feet away.

But worst of all, there was a bomb ticking away, with fifty seconds left on the timer.

Wanda ran over to the bomb, checking for a way to stop it but finding none. She shook her head negatively when Kaldur asked if it could be diffused.

"What do we do now?" Artemis asked.

Wanda got a steely look to eyes."You guys get Jason and his mom out of here, leave the bomb to me." When the team just stared at her, Wanda snapped. "Go!"

The team leaped into action, half of them running to Jason's mom and the others to Jason. Satisfied that they listened, Wanda turned her attention back to the bomb. She put a psionic force field around it, lifting it into the air.

Wanda grit her teeth with frustration as the bomb counted down, reaching ten seconds. She glanced over at her team to see them dragging Jason and his mom out of the warehouse. Wanda slowly started to back up to the door, keeping the bomb in the force field.

Once she was outside and staring at the force field through the door, she glanced back to see everyone boarding the bioship. Wanda grinned in triumph, backing up a step, only to trip on a stick and fall backwards, losing her concentration on the bomb and subsequently releasing it from her force field.

She looked up in horror as the bomb reached zero, exploding the warehouse with her only a few feet away.

"Wanda!" The team watched helplessly as the warehouse came down around Wanda, waiting until the rubble settled before making their way off the bioship to where Wanda was.

She was trapped under a pile of rubble, Conner lifting it off her. Wanda groaned, letting the team know she was still alive. Conner picked her up gently and they brought her back to the bioship, setting her in her seat before taking off.

The flight was quiet for a short moment before Wally asked a burning question. "How did Wanda know there was a bomb?"

"She didn't, not exactly. She just said something was wrong and it was." Zatanna defended, looking back at the battered girl. "And she probably sensed it with her telepathy."

"If that's so, how come M'gann didn't feel it?" Dick raised a brow from his seat next to Jason.

Zatanna shrugged. "Maybe because Wanda is closer to Jason's mom than she is? She did have the connection to find her."

The team begrudgedly accepted this answer, eyeing Wanda carefully for the rest of the flight.

M'gann alerted the Justice League to the incident, letting them know Jason and Wanda will need medical attention. She couldn't help but let her mind wander to a few days ago, back when the team was watching a movie together. M'gann never got around to telling the rest of the team about Psimon contacting Wanda, it had completely slipped her mind.

Could Wanda...? No, impossible. She would never do that. But then again, we barely know her...

M'gann narrowed her eyes as she piloted them back to the mountain, determined to figure out what exactly was going on. She didn't want to let the team know of her suspicions in case she was wrong, she didn't want to start any drama.

M'gann decided she would let them in on it once she had confirmation that Wanda was a double agent, if she got confirmation.

The flight was deathly silent, the only sounds being the occasional groan and raspy breath from either Jason or Wanda, letting the others know they are still alive.

After a few more hours of flying, the team arrived back at the mountain to see some of the Justice League waiting for them in the hangar. Conner carried Wanda out and Dick carried Jason, Kaldur dragging Jason's mom with him.

The Justice League was silent, ushering the team to the medical bay where they had Conner and Dick place Wanda and Jason down on cots before shooing them out the door so they could get to work. The team reluctantly went to the lounge, collapsing in a heap of exhaustion.

Black Canary soon joined them, taking a seat on the couch and eyeing them carefully before speaking. "So, what exactly happened?"

"Jason found out his birth mom was still alive and went to Wanda for help in finding her, knowing no one else would help. Wanda led him to his birth mother via telepathy, and we found out about Jason leaving because he left a note. We had Wanda lead us to them and we found them with just a minute left on a bomb. Wanda contained the bomb while we got the two of them out and then she couldn't hold it any longer, the bomb going off and toppling the building with it." Dick explained in one breath. "Then we came back here after recovering Wanda."

Canary nodded. "You guys got lucky, very lucky. If you had arrived back here even five minutes later, Jason would've died."

"How are they? Jason and Wanda?" Zatanna asked, bouncing her leg anxiously.

"They are stable, you can see them in a few hours." Black Canary smiled sadly at them. "They are both going to make it. You guys should be grateful for Wanda, its thanks to her that Jason is still alive."

"Yeah, and thanks to her we almost lost him." Dick grumbled.

"Not exactly, Jason would've found his birth mother eventually, without Wanda's help. And without Wanda being involved, the outcome would've been very different." Black Canary sighed, standing up and heading towards the exit. She paused in the door. "Don't be too harsh on her, she is still learning."

Then Black Canary left, leaving the team to stew in their thoughts while the Justice League repaired their injured friends.
