Chapter 4

My fingers start feeling very soft grass, I can also smell some and soak in the softness with my fingers.

"You're beautiful," I turn my head to the left and find myself looking at once my prince charming, laying on the grass next to me. I shy away and blush. I look at him again, his dark blue eyes staring at me.

"You think so?" I ask sarcastically, craving his approval. He smirks and blushes a bit. Oh, how I love it when he flashes his playful smirk.

"You know I'm crazy for you," He looks intensely into my eyes. He lays sideways and touches my long brown hair. He moves on to stroking my cheek, he moves closer. I close my eyes and hear him chuckle. When I open then he wraps his arms around my waist, and he starts rolling us around the grass.

"Hey, let go," I protest as we roll and laugh. When he stops I end up on top of him. He looks at me intensely, he tucks a strand of my hair behind my ear.

"Please don't ever leave me."

I wake up with my chest aching. I try pacing my breath, but the air is getting thicker.

"Abby, you ok?" I hear a distant voice.

I manage to answer, "yeah, I just panicked for a second," I pause. "I'm alright don't worry about it."

Jessica is 10 years old and in 5th grade in Lincoln elementary which is a block away from our house, so she usually walks to school. Like me, Jessica has dark gray eyes, but instead of black hair, she has her natural light brown hair. Her hair unlike my straight dead hair that's just past my shoulders, hers is up to her waist. Even our personalities are quite different, she's cheerful, sweet, and social, unlike me.

"Hey, Jess?" I start once I change out of my pajamas and head to the kitchen to make some dinner.

"Yeah?" Jess pops up. "Umm.... today I'm going out, would you be ok on your own? I promise I will be back at 10....ish," my lip quivers a bit. I wait for her response. She looks a bit puzzled and narrows her eyes.

"Not a problem, where are you going?" she stands in the doorway of the kitchen with her arms crossed.

I stumble on my words a bit, "Um...you know, out."

She starts smiling, "Out where? Or should I say with whom?" I look up from tying the apron around my waist. She raises an eyebrow.

I turn to the sink," you know out.... with friends."

She starts laughing lightly, " Abby, I'm kidding, I'll be fine. Just have fun."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm in the living room and look at myself in the full-length mirror. I feel a bit overdone, especially since I am not going anywhere fancy. With the help of Jess, the makeup helps me look like a glass doll, and instead of dark makeup, I am wearing lighter colors that make me look innocent. Jess was able to curly my hair and make it look nice. I have a dark green ribbon tied to my hair in a half ponytail. As promised, I'm wearing Lura's suggested outfit with a jean jacket. Way out of my comfort zone, but for the first time I like it.

"Ding Dong," the bell rings. I panic and lounge for cover behind the sofa. Jess standing from a distance gives me a weird look.

"What are you doing?"

I clear my throat and stand up from embarrassment, "Nothing."

I walk over to the door but pause for a second and turn to look at Jess. Without speaking she is motioning me to open the door. Well, the door won't open itself now, will it? I clear my throat once more, "Hey."

Blake stares at me for a moment, which makes me feel a bit awkward, I probably look ridiculous with makeup and my choice of clothes.

He clears his throat, "Woah, you look great." He seems a bit surprised and lets out a breath, which you can see since its late fall weather.

"Really? I can totally change. It won't take lo-,"

He interrupts, "No, I didn't mean it like that, you look great. I'm just used to seeing you differently."

Lost with words, I think of something quick, "Would you like to come in for a bit."

He doesn't hesitate, "Sure."

Once inside, I introduce him to Jess. "Take a seat and I'll go get my stuff, " I leave the room and go grab my phone and handbag. When I come into view, Blake stands up and we say goodbye to Jess.

"You look very nice today," Blake tells me once we arrive at the party.

"Thanks."

We walk towards Taylor's house. I pause a bit before we enter.

"What's wrong." Blake looks at me, he wraps his arm around me, "Com'on, I promise it won't be that bad. You ready?"

I nod.

Once we enter its crazy packed, red cups everywhere, music coming from all directions. Many people are shoving and bumping into us that Blake takes my hand and leads me to the living room. We end up finding the friend group playing truth or dare. When we come into everyone's view, they all look up.

"You guys made it, going to join us," Taylor points to an empty seat on the couch. Blake tells me to take the seat, while he bro shakes his friends. He then sits in the arm of the chair beside me.

"Alright, whose turn is it," Kyra continues the game.

"How about Luke?" The boy wearing a long gray sleeve.

"You made it, man," Taylor hands him a drink. Luke chugs it and joins the group.

"Truth or dare, Luke," Lura asks.

He picks the truth, "OK, is it true you're currently single?" He answers yes.

"Wow, really man I could have sworn, you had someone," Zack pitches in.

"Guess again," Luke takes a sip of a drink.

"OK, how about Blake?" Jackie chimes in.

"I'll go with Dare," Blake quickly says.

"OK, Blake, I dare you to get us more drinks." Kyra winks.

Without hesitation, Blake is on his way.

"Abby, you're up," Kyra states.

I choose the truth, " Is it true you have feelings for someone in this group?"

"Dare, I choose dare," I quickly say. Feelings are an illusion; they can quickly change. Blake comes in with a few drinks.

Kyra takes one and hands it to me, "Chug it all." I see everyone looking at me. Blake looks confused, he is about to say something when I quickly take it and chug it all. I don't like being looked down on, especially when Kyra is the one challenging me.

I look at Kyra, "Satisfied." Zack and Hector start wooing.

"Ugh," feeling really annoyed as I trip with the table nearby me.

"You OK? you kinda drank the whole thing down a bit fast," Blake looks at me with concern.

"I'm fine, don't worry," I say but the truth is that I can barely stand up. I feel a bit woozy and kinda thirsty. I stumble and start hiccupping. Blake chuckles a bit and holds me up.

"Wait here, I'll bring you some water."

I look for a table or a wall where I can lean on, without falling over.

"Woah, there " I turn around and find Lura with her drink next to me.

I clear my throat, "Yeah, just a little spiny, I think." Lura helps me get near a chair for support.

"So, you and Blake? Were you thinking of telling me anytime soon? In case you forgot, you didn't tell me you were coming together," She takes a sip of her drink.

"What are you talking about? I only came with him because he asked. And you were telling me to give him a chance, and I did." My head hurts and I am thirsty, I don't want to have this conversation.

"OK, I'll believe that. I'm still hurt that you didn't tell me he asked you though?"

Feeling fuzzy I ask, "Why would I tell you?"

"I'm your friend, Abby. Shouldn't I at least "

I cut her off, "Can you get to the part where you ask if I'm doing OK?" I tell her sarcastically.

"Wow, really?! You don't even tell your best friend that you're with Blake. I liked him first, and you didn't even care about my feelings."

Confused, I asked her, "You liked Blake?"

"Don't act like you didn't know, I was making it so obvious. You know you never ask me how I'm doing. You don't even act to care," She crosses her arms.

"Look, Lura, I never asked you to do any of that," My head feels fuzzy. I start walking before she can say anything else; I need to get my thoughts straight.

"Hey, you know you're really a bad friend" Lura grabs me, I shake her off, and climb some stairs I found. I keep climbing to get away from her. She does not follow.

Lura has been my longest friend, never once did it cross my mind that she liked Blake. My head feels heavy, and my legs are very wobbly. The 2nd floor of the house is very quiet, with almost no one around. I search for a chair.

I end up going inside a room that looks like a study room. I take a seat and notice a fridge. I searched for it and found some water. My brain is pounding, I need time to take it all in. I never knew that Lura was holding all that inside of her, I just assumed she didn't mind. She didn't mind having such a sorry excuse for a friend like me. A big thump distracts my thinking. I stood up assuming that footsteps were approaching. but the door does not open. I sit back down and take a drink of the water from the bottle I took out of the fridge. I hear the noise a second time. I search around and notice the top window is open. Next to it, there are ladder-like steps. I climb up the ladder, then hear the sound again. It is coming from outside the window. I climb out the window.

Once outside, the view is amazing, the stars are beautiful, the wind is just right, very calm, a bit cold, but great. "It's beautiful isn't it?" I hear someone remark behind the window. I turn around and find I am not alone.

"What are you doing here?" I ask.

"Maybe doing the same thing you are, Escaping." I walk over to where the person's silhouette is.

"Careful, it's slippery," he advises. I take a seat next to the voice, "Party a little too crazy for you?"

"Yeah, not really my kinda pace."

"I get that, people are exhausting. I feel like I can breathe up here."

"Yeah. The stars are great. I can even see the moon." I chortle.

"What's your sign? Mines Taurus, your?"

"I actually not sure"

"Well, When's your birthday?"

"May"

"May what?"

"20th"

"Then Taurus," I never met anyone that can make a conversation between two strangers, seems so natural.

"What would you do, if you had one year to live, would you change anything about the way you are now living?" The silhouette asks thoughtfully.

I hesitate, but then what do I have to lose? He is a stranger I probably won't ever see again. "I don't know, my life right now isn't really ideal. It is not like I choose to live like this. I don't like the people I share a house with nor do I feel important being with them. the school also sucks so, that is that. What about you? Do you have something you're regretting?" I move the floor to them.

"Yeah, but I can't do anything about it. The person I know will be gone before I know it. For many people, a year is a lot of time, but a year with no choice to longer duration is short. One thing, I wish I could change is that: death. The choice of death. But time is a jerk. The wrong people leave. And the wrong people stay."

The door opens and a voice calls out, "Hey, you in here, Will?" I flinch at the familiarity of the voice. "Will, Are you up on the roof again?" Taylor's voice grows closer.

I turn to the silhouette next to me, "Well, that's my keeper. You can stay here as long as you want. No one or nothing comes here but me. I'll see you around."
