Chapter 25
I give it a few minutes until I get the courage to enter the room, Luke has yet to come out of. When I enter the room, it appears no one is inside. Turning to leave, when I notice a window is open.
I climb the ladder next to it, go out through the window. I see the silhouette sitting beside the window.
"Weird. Usually, people aren't very good at finding me," Luke pondered.
"I actually overheard your conversation with Taylor," I confess. He might hate me for this but I was really done hurting everyone. I am not able to apologize to people, the words never make it out of my mouth. But the least I can do is come out with the truth.
"It is what it is," He doesn't hesitate.
"I don't want to break your friendships. I don't want to be the reason, you lose your friends."
"No, I promised I'll help you. I'll make sure you get out of that house. I promise."

It seems that everyone likes Luke. And why wouldn't they, I've heard countless people say he's handsome. I really don't know anything about Luke. I haven't even taken the time to talk about her life. It makes me wonder if he's ever liked, anyone. I wonder if maybe he can like me.
I look at Luke who shoots a basket. Then I look at the basketball in my hands, " Luke do like anyone?"
Catch by surprise, Luke shoots a basket but misses, "What?"
I clear my throat, "Nothing. Forget it."
He smirks, "What, no. Let's talk about it."
"Well, I don't know, like do you have any dreams? "
He walks over to the grass and lays down, "At night?"
I join him, "No, like aspirations. What do you look forward to in the future?"
"Abby my future is unpredictable. I'm trying to enjoy life at the moment and live for this one year."
"What happens after one year?"
He looks at me.
"You're always saying things like that? Live in the moment. Think about today, not tomorrow. That day on the roof you also said that. You said you wished for more time," I ponder.
He shrugs, "I have a disparaging future. Very disparaging."
I sit up, "You think I'm stupid."
"Sometimes but I usually keep that to myself," He chortles.
"Luke, What happens after the year?"
"Even I don't know the answer," He sits up. "I'm not like you. I'm not brave enough to do something for myself or my life. You actually asked someone for help. I haven't been able to do that or like I don't want to. When I first met you I genuinely disliked you. And if you haven't asked for help for basketball, or told me about the whites, I would have continued to hate you. But you did tell me. That makes you different from me."
"That doesn't answer anything."
"Yes, it does. I was 7 when my parents divorced, later when I was 8 my father remarried. I moved back with my mom and guess what? My mom remarried too. She then had more kids when I was 9. Now I don't hate Stacy or anything. But I never once in my life have I had the guts to say I wasn't happy. I smile at people and get along with them, but really I'm only smiling on the outside when I am actually crying on the inside."
"I'm not that brave." Since the day I met Luke, I disliked him only based on his looks and his relation to Taylor. But he's made me realize that we are all broken, fighting our own battles.
"Abby, you are the bravest person that I know. You don't act like your happy, you've never faked it. Your always on guard, which I used to hate you for being a priss, but now, I know why you act like that. And you what's more amazing," He looks at me. "is just that. your fighting to change your future. Your not letting people get in the way. Your changing."

The Whites have been out for a few days, no doubt they're at the company. I hate these green walls, I hate how white each door of this house is white. I know what I must do; I either do now or never get out of this house. Jessica is out at school, practicing for her school play; once again I would have been alone, but this time, Luke is here.
"You ready?"
I give him a nod.
We quickly go approach the Whites' bedroom; I grab the doorknob. It seems to be locked. I look at Luke. Pondering, I go to the kitchen to see if I can use something from there. Opening the drawers, we browse over their contents. There it is. Without hesitation, I grab a butter spreader. I signal Luke; We go to the door again, I stick the spreader in between the door.
Success.
After talking with Luke and his mom, she told me I have to find the executive board's statement, along with the CEO's testament of the company's will. The first place I look is the closet, but the cabinet is missing. Luke looks at me. I try the dresser but we find nothing there either.
She knows. She knows I have been searching through her things.
"We have to move fast she probably has figured out that you are looking through her stuff. I'll go keep an eye on the window. Try to find anything, we can't lose time," He ponders. He heads toward the living room to keep watch.
Quickly, I browse through her bed, bedside table, anywhere I can think of. No luck, it's been cleared. Looking under the bed I see something sticking out from between the sheets. I pull some papers out.
Bingo.
I browse over the contents of the discovered papers, when I hear Luke calling from the living room," Abby!"
I run to the living room, holding the papers for Luke to see, "Luke, I found them. What's wrong?"
As soon as I enter the living room, he grabs the papers, hiding them inside his jacket.
Before I can ask, what's going on, Luke pulls me to the living room, urging me to sit down. As I comply, the front door opens.
My heart stops for a bit, as a shiver goes down my neck. Mrs. White and Mr. White come in. Now I realize why Luke was calling me over. My hands go numb, I try to pace my breath.
Their expression darks as their eyes land on Luke.
