chapter 23

A second chance. Just maybe she can give me a second chance to be a better friend. All I know is that I took her for granted when she was the only person who stuck by me. Now, at least I know she might not hate me.

"Fries?" Luke interrupts my thoughts.

"What?" I ask confused.

He holds up the menu, "I'm asking, what you want?"

I blink a few times, "Oh, right. Let me read it first."

"What about you, guys?" He directs Stacy and Jess, who are sitting on the other side of the booth.

Stacy lets out a mischievous giggle.

"Milkshakes?" Luke offers the girls

"Yes! I want vanilla! No, no wait, Peppermint chocolate," Stacy's eyes literally popped out.

Jess looks at me before, agreeing. I giving her a nod, "Vanilla, please."

After the game, Luke had the idea of going to Lucy's diner. I wanted to decline since I really don't have money to use, but Jess was there when he asked, making me give in.

"Vanilla?" Luke asks me.

I furrow my eyebrows, "What?" I try to pay attention to what he's saying but my mind keeps going back to Lura.

"You said your favorite color is yellow, so vanilla," He reasons. "Unless you're into some weird banana nut flavor of ice cream."

I blink hard, "Yeah."

"Yeah?" He smirks.

"I'm sorry. I didn't hear what you said." I look away. "I'll just have a strawberry milkshake."

"You seem distracted for someone played well, " He eyes me suspiciously. "Not into milkshakes?"

"No, it's not that. It's just-. Forget it." I try to dismiss it.

"Come on, tell me, " he insists.

I look over to Stacy and Jess chatting. Luke follows, "Hey, Stac. Mind grabbing the milkshakes?"

"No, sir," she happily takes the money and drags Jess to the diner's bar.

"You were saying," He faces me and puts her elbow on the table.

"It's just that Lura...um," I look for the right wording. "We ended in bad terms, and I kind of want to undo that," it sounds more of a question than a statement.

" So, tall honey tan-"

"Lura!" I correct.

He chuckles, " Right. Lura. You want to make up."

"In a way, yeah."

"You have to decide that. If, she really is important, then talk to her. Only you can decide that." He gives me an encouraging smile.

Stacy and Jess come back when a tray of milkshakes. Luke hands me my milkshake.

"Great job today, Abby."

The weekend. How I really like the weekend. The whites are gone for another business trip and Jess is at her school for some school play.

I inhale the aroma of coffee.

Many things are in my mind. I do care about Lura, but I don't think I should continue to be in her life.

"Well, hello, Abigail Johnson. You've grown up nicely," I look up. There's a lady with an office uniform standing in front of me. Analyzing her face, I remember who she is.

"Ms. Lone, how are you?" I greet her back. She worked for my parents.

"I'm just fine, thank you. I haven't seen you in the longest time after you moved away the last time I saw you was about a few years ago. How's school? you must really busy."

"Just a bit." It seems that I am always constantly reminded that I lost my parents, along with my old life. I look at her uniform. "Are you still working at CNE?"

Her expression saddens, "No, I was dismissed a few months back. I thought you would've known?"

I give her a confused look. "Dismissed? Why would I know that?"

She looks at me, "Because of the committee board. Your mother was appointed, which really a lot of people didn't expect that. I mean, from what I know Peyton really wanted to inherit that company, but her parents appointed Sarah, instead. Peyton didn't seem to like it much, but then again, when I worked under her, she would complain about Sarah. I always thought that Peyton was jealous of Sarah, but then she adopted you and your sister when you guys need a home. I think that was really sweet."

"Mrs. Wh- er, I mean Peyton and my mother worked together?" I ask carefully.

She furrows her eyebrows, " They were like sisters. Did you not know?"

Sisters? I never would've guessed. Whatever relationship they had in the past, Mrs. White has obviously forgotten. I don't say anything, because I can't come with anything.

"The Whites are very charming I must say. Always at the company. Very attentive to the board members and employees. I was dismissed but I hear they are constantly working to better the company, now that your parents are gone."

"Wait, What?" I asked shocked.

"The whites their always at the company. Aren't you handing it to them?"

"Point guard, Kyra Fox

Small power forward, Penny Davis

Shooting guard, Abigail Johnson

Power forward, Rachel Moore

and

Center, Lura Mcgarden.

This is the team that will go on the scouting trip. I want to thank everyone for your time," The head coach dismisses.

Everyone high-fives each other. I look over at Lura talking with Kyra. If I was Kyra I don't think I would ever have o worry about making friends and keeping them. Kyra catches me staring, I look away.

"Hey, good job," Kyra lifts up her hand.

I look at her hand, "I thought you didn't like me much."

"Oh, I don't. But your the shooting guard, and I know that we have to get along to bring back a trophy," She clarifies.

"So you're giving me your pity. I'll play as I should when we're on the court. I don't need to fake anything, " I walk away. One thing is admiring her, but I don't need her pity.

"Nice going, Johnson!" Luke comes to congratulate me.

I nod. I think about whether or not I should tell him. I have to tell someone and he's the only one who will listen.

"Luke, They are planning something," I whisper while glancing around.

"Yeah, the scouting trip," He sounds excited.

"No, not that. I have to tell you something after school. Let's meet at the Grind?"

He scratches the back of her head, "I can't. It's Taylor's party tonight."
