Sleeping Beauty Castle
"Aurora! We're over here!"
I put away my phone and gasped in delight upon seeing my best friends, Anna and Lucy, standing in front of the most beautiful Disney monument ever.
The Sleeping Beauty castle sat atop the center of Main Street, towering over the park with its beautiful, regal colors of pink and blue. Everything about the castle was exquisite. It looked like a real castle that Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip really lived in.
I ran up to my friends and hugged them. "Thanks for meeting me here, you guys. And thanks, Anna, for taking a day off of work!" I thanked. Anna tucked a strand of her short, black hair behind her ear. "You know what? A day at Disney is so worth taking a day off of work for." Lucy smiled. "Well, I had to take a half day off of work too, you know?" He pointed over to the Main Street Trolley. "I was just driving that half an hour ago." I smiled, slightly jealous that Lucy got to work at the happiest place on earth for a living. What a dream job! It was totally my dream job.
I laughed nonetheless. "Well, thank you for taking a half day and staying here so that we can have a fun day." I looked up at the Sleeping Beauty castle and let out a sigh of relief. Just looking at the castle was enough to put me in such good spirits. Both Anna and Lucy looked up at the castle with me. "It really is pretty. Your mom said that this has been your favorite Disney attraction since you were a little girl. Makes sense, since you were named after Princess Aurora."
The story of how I was named after Aurora was a good one and very romantic. My mother and father met and their first date was to go see the movie Sleeping Beauty, which was being shown because of a special anniversary for the movie. From then on, my parents were inseparable and they got married not long after. Then, when I was born, they decided to name me Aurora, after Princess Aurora in the movie, since that's how they first fell in love. It also helped that I looked a lot like Aurora (same color and style hair, eyes not purple but blue, you know what she looks like.)
It makes sense that I would have such a special connection to the Sleeping Beauty castle, since Sleeping Beaty is such a large part of my life. I feel at home here, like I could live upstairs in the castle forever.
I smiled at Anna and Lucy. "Should we start off our Disney day the right way and take a tour of the Sleeping Beauty castle?" Anna and Lucy both lit up and nodded. We started making our way towards the entrance of the castle, glancing at the beautiful statue of Aurora and Phillip at the start of the queue. I wondered if I would ever find my Phillip someday.
We started up the stairs, reading every storybook entry and looking through every animated window we could, just taking it all in. Disney nostalgia at its finest could be found in this castle. Once we got up to the large room at the top of the castle with all the animated windows, I squinted to see through the darkness and find Anna and Lucy. I had lost them!
"Guys? Where are you? I can't see you too well." I cautiously made my way through the crowds, trying to find my friends, but to no avail. Where could they have gone?
I stopped at the animated window where Aurora was lying fast asleep on her royal bed, just waiting for her prince to come and rescue her from eternal slumber. I smiled at all the pretty pastel colors in the window. Purple and pink flowers surrounded a sleeping Aurora, the beautiful purple sheets were sitting prettily on the bed, and Aurora's golden blonde hair and royal blue gown draped over the bed elegantly. It was such a picturesque scene, it was hard to imagine this was only one segment in the hour long film. I could stare at this forever.
"Isn't it beautiful?"
I was startled by a deep voice from behind me. I gasped and whipped around to be face to face with a very handsome stranger. He had dark, short brown hair, warm brown eyes, and a kind, charming smile. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to frighten you." He apologized, his voice deep but soft. Wait, I recognize that saying...
"Oh, it's okay, it's not that, it's just that, um.." I babbled on, trying to find the right words to say to this man. He smiled. "It's just that I'm a stranger?" He asked. I furrowed my brow. That was definitely familiar. I nodded and smiled. "And also because I wasn't expecting somebody to start talking to me. You see, I'm looking for my friends, we seem to have been separated in the castle."
He frowned. "Oh, that's too bad. Do you think I could be of some help?" My eyes widened. "Really? You would help me find my friends?" He smiled. "Of course. It'll make up for how I scared you, too." I blushed, embarrassed. "Oh, hehe, there is no need. But I appreciate it." The man stuck out his hand for me to shake. "My name is Phillip." I gasped. He just laughed. "I know, I know, kind of appropriate to the setting, huh? I was actually named after Prince Phillip from the movie." I double-gasped. Now this was getting freaky.
"What is your name?" He asked me. I laughed. "You'll never believe it." He raised an eyebrow. I shook his hand. "My name is Aurora. I was named after Princess Aurora from the same movie." Phillip's eyes went wide and he grinned. "Isn't that a magical coincidence? I guess that's what I should expect at Disney." I smiled, reluctantly breaking off our handshake. "I guess we should be looking for my friends, Anna and Lucy." Phillip nodded. "Here, let me lead you through the castle, Princess Aurora. I hear there are dragons down here." I giggled and followed him out of the room and down the stairs.
Even though we were on a search, we couldn't help ourselves from gazing at all the pretty animated windows and the architecture of the castle. We passed by the window where you could see all of Main Street from the pinnacle of he castle. Suddenly, we were winding down the stairs, looking down at Maleficent turning into a dragon! I was so distracted by the dragon that I tripped and lost my footing on the stairs. I yelped and started to fall forward, but I was caught by Phillip. "Aurora! Are you alright?" He asked, still holding me in his arms.
A huge blush crept across my cheeks. "O-oh! Yes, I'm just fine. Thank you for saving me." I stood myself up and tried to get rid of the dopey grin (pun intended!) and red blush off of my face. Phillip smiled. "In a way, I saved you from the dragon, huh?" He pointed to the dragon in the window. "I guess we are a little bit like our namesakes after all." He turned around and started cautiously walking down the stairs again, making sure I was following close behind.
We made it to the end of the stairs and stopped to look at the ending scene. Aurora was lying fast asleep on her bed, Prince Phillip standing beside her. He slowly leaned in closer to her and, just as their lips met, Aurora prettily fluttered her eyes open and smiled, and the colors returned to the animation and the flowers bloomed.
I couldn't help but sigh at the lovey-dovey scene. I wish it could be like this in real life - being a beautiful princess that falls in love with a charming prince. Phillip came up behind me and smiled. "You seem to be distracted. Are you positive you want to find your friends?" He teased.
I laughed. "I'm sorry, it's just so beautiful in here. This is my favorite scene from the movie too." Phillip smiled and looked at the little animation box, which had replayed the scene. "Yeah, it is a good part. Where every wrong is righted and the whole kingdom lives happily ever after." Phillip sighed dreamily, his brown hair falling into his warm, kind eyes. "It's pretty perfect."
I couldn't help but stop to look at him, especially since he was looking away from me for once. He was really a very handsome man. But there was something more about him. I squinted a bit, trying to figure out why he looked so familiar. And then it hit me. Like a semi truck. My eyes went wide as I put two and two together.
"Prince Phillip!" I inadvertently shouted, pointing at Phillip. Startled, he looked back at me with a surprised expression on his face. "Are you talking about me?" He asked, pointing a finger at himself. I nodded. "I was trying to figure out who you reminded me of, and it just came to me. You look exactly like Prince Phillip."
Phillip smiled, obviously happy with the compliment. I mean, Prince Phillip is pretty high up on the cute Disney prince list. "Well, that's a coincidence, because I was just about to say that you remind me of Princess Aurora." I couldn't help but blush. "Really?" I asked. He nodded. "Isn't this funny? The modern day Prince Phillip and Princess Aurora meeting each other for the first time in the Sleeping Beauty castle. That seems pretty magical, Aurora."
He stepped closer to me, making me blush even more. I understood exactly what he was saying. I smiled back. "Well, that's the thing about Disneyland, everything here is magical." I looked back to see that the hand I had rested on the side of the castle had Phillip's warm hand gently on top of it. Wow. This really was a fairytale!
"Auroraaaa!" I gasped and jerked backwards, whirling around to see Anna and Lucy heading our way. "We've been looking everywhere for you, we started to get worried." Anna said, hugging me. "Oh, I'm so sorry! I've actually been looking for you." Anna huffed and looked at Lucy. "Well, SOMEBODY just had to stay and admire the architecture of the ceilings." Lucy, with a fake innocent look on her face, just whistled. "When Lucy finished, we looked up and you were gone."
I bit my lower lip. "I thought you guys had continued on, so I rushed through to try and find you. I'm so sorry." Well, not entirely sorry. Without this little experience, I wouldn't have met Phillip. Oh, Phillip!
"Oh! Anna, Lucy, this is Phillip. He was helping me look for you." Hands were shaken and Anna smiled. "Phillip? You're kidding! So Aurora and Phillip went on an adventure in the Sleeping Beauty castle?" Lucy giggled. "Perhaps you two were meant to be! Like Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip! Isn't that so romantic?"
Phillip and I turned to look at each other, catching a glimpse of the best scene in the movie playing behind us. Phillip smiled, and I returned the expression.
"Yes, magically so."
