Last Moments
I can barely hear you breathing
I'm sure I had a heart before
what happened to the beat
I'm sure I could feel my fingers before
what happened
did I grow cold
I can barely hear you breathing
your voice is so distant
am I still alive
I'm sure there was no pain before
now I can feel it deep in my soul
and I can barely hear you breathing
are you still close
I'm sure I could see before
why is it so dark
-- Author's Note --
This poem is for Luke McVittie, who died so suddenly at such a young age (2013). The night was such a horrible shock and I wrote this before we knew he'd passed. He went into a diabetic coma, and stopped breathing half an hour later despite the efforts of his closest friends. Death is so painful and unexpected. We will always remember him in the winter and when we watch Wreck it Ralph.
