Chapter 1

YAY THE FIRST CHAPTER

Dan looked up at his mum with wide, pleading eyes. "Please don't make me go." Dan begged, fiddling with the straps of his school backpack. He was changed and ready for school but there was one problem...

He didn't want to go. At all.

"Daniel, you can't keep taking days off like this! What is making you so anxious anyway?" Dan's mum responded, making Dan step back.

"Nothing! I'm leaving now!" He hurriedly said before quickly walking out of the house. Once his front door was closed, he took a left towards his school.

-

Exhaling a shaky breath, Dan reluctantly wandered in through the school gates. The gate towered over Dan and was completely intimidating. It was weirdly fitting for the hell it was protecting. No one glanced in his direction or even noticed his presence except a couple people who were quick to turn away. Dan put his head down, looking down at the pavement and rushing inside the building.

The halls were like a barren wasteland and that wasn't even an exaggeration. Not a single person was inside, except Dan (of course). The reason was probably that it was quite early. Dan liked to get in school before most others so he could sit in the library and read.

He pushed open the door to the library and timidly waved at the librarian who kindly smiled back. Dan wandered towards the nonfiction shelves and flicked through the different books until he found one that interested him.

'Stars.'

Dan pulled out the book and took it over to the back table. He laid it down open on the table and began to read the first page.

It was all about stars (duh) and their life cycles. Even though Dan could already recite the cycle from memory, he eagerly read the text and looked at the pictures.

Dan really liked space. He found the fact that it was so huge and vast absolutely intriguing and its beauty entrancing.

He knew all about stars, galaxies, black holes and planets. He probably had a different fact for every day of the year.

Coincidentally, Dan happened to be wearing his favourite galaxy jumper. It was pink and blue and it just looked really pretty.

He flipped to the next page which was all about the different constellations. After about half an hour, the bell rang, making Dan jump a little. He closed his book, slipped it back into its place on the shelf and picked up his bag.

-

"Okay so," Dan's tutor said in his unbelievably monotone voice. "Just get on with any homework you have or read or something." Dan was fine with that instruction; he grabbed his maths book and pulled out the worksheet that had been set as homework. It was fairly simple: all Dan had to do was expand the algebraic brackets. Easy enough.

Dan picked up his pen and wrote his name down on the paper. He glanced down at the first question and contemplated what to do.

Expand 2a(a+3).

Dan bit down on the end of his pen before deciding to do some multiplying.

That sounded right.. Right?

In the end, Dan got 2a^2+6a which looked pretty much right so he wrote it down on the first line and proceeded onto the next question.

-

In maths, Dan happened to sit next to one of the most annoying kids in the class. His name was Chris and he never stopped pestering Dan.

When Dan sat down beside Chris in his maths lesson that day, Chris immediately said his name. "Did you do the homework?" He asked, making Dan tightly clutch his exercise book. "Be a nice friend and let me copy?" Dan didn't say anything, he just shook his head. "Fine then." Chris reached out and snatched the book right from his hands.

"Give it back!" Dan tried but Chris was already flicking through the book, searching for the worksheet. As soon as he found it, he grinned, pulling it out.

"Thanks Daniel!" Chris then took out his blank worksheet and began to copy the answers.

What do you think about the first chapter??
