Chapter 1

TO THIEF OR NOT TO THIEF

The Shadow's POV

Two years later

I made my way down town as soon as my GPS I had planted on a thief a few weeks ago informed me that the thief was making his way to the jewelery store.

You would think that when someone usually knows about someone who is going to rob a store they would pick up their phones immediately and call the police, but not me.

This is where that saying comes into play, if you can't beat them join them. Crime was something that was part of our daily life.
Instead of going home after a long shift of changing peoples lives that most honest citizens do I am making my way to a robbery in progress without notifying the police. This is how my life has been like for the last two years. The city was my playground, I knew what in needed to do to save my city, even though it is not exactly the way I wanted to do it, but a thief's got to do what a thief's got to do.

I finally arrived at the store, the streets were quiet and there was an eerie glow to it. I could hear a faint sound coming from the jelewery store. I made my way to the back of the store and picked the lock as quietly as I could. After securing my mask on my face I entered the store.
I could make out the thief's form and after studying him intently I cleared my throat and said, "Well, well, well what have we got here?" I asked, still hiding in the shadows.

He immediately dropped his bag of jewels and pulled out a knife, "Wh-who's there?" he stuttered in fear.

"Just a curious man." I answered coming out of the shadows.
He swung the knife at me and my instincts immediately kicked in as I grabbed his wrist, spinning him around I pulled his arm behind his back throwing the knife across the room. I spun him around again so that he was facing me. I grabbed him by his colar, looking him strait in the eye.

"W-what d-do you want?" He asked, the fear clear in his voice, but I don't blame him.

"Who is he?" I asked.

"W-ho?" He asked back inocently, as if he didn't have a clue who I was talking about.

"Your employer!?" I screamed at him, my eyes not leaving his face for a minute.

"I d-don't know who he is." I believed him, I believed a lying crook.

"How did you meet him?" I questioned him.

"I never met him, someone just started sending me money with instructions to do odd jobs, thats all I know I swear." I knew he knew something more that he wasn't telling me, so I had to interogate him somewhere else, I had to think of a plan to get him to my lair, I knocked this stranger out quickly, his body falled on the cold hard floor. How do I get a guy out of here without attracting attention?

My thoughts were interupted when the police captain barged in and yelled freeze, luckily I knew my way around the place and got out immediately.

Victoria's POV

My alarm clock buzzed me awake, I was tempted to hit the snooze button but I knew if I slept for one more minute my mother would barge in and scream on me to get my lazy butt dressed and ready for school.
Don't get me wrong I enjoy school and I am a strait A student but I am not a morning person.
After getting up, I picked out an outfit and went into my bathroom to shower and get ready.

After I was dressed I headed downstairs, my mom was busy in the kitchen making pancakes.
"Morning mum." I greeted as I sat down at the island.

"Morning sweetie, how did you sleep?" She asked with a smile.

"Fine thank you. Where's dad?" I asked curiously.

"He is still getting ready, he came in late last night." My mother replied while dishing some pancakes for me.
After taking a few bites of my mother's delicious pancakes I asked,
"Oh, another robbery?" I already knew what the answer was going to be, seeing that since 'the Shadow' showed up my father has been extremely busy.

"Yes, I wish that 'the shadow' would just stop this robberies and get a decent job like every other citizen who is trying to make a decent living." My mother said as she sat down next to me, anger clear in her voice.

"I heard that things like that can get addictive and he must be extremely self confident by now because he hasn't been caught yet." I replied in between bites.

"And that selfconfidence is going to get him caught." My dad said behind me, giving me and my mom each a kiss on the cheek.
My mom gave my dad some pancakes as he sat down.

"Thanks darling, so Vici are you ready for school, I want to go in early." My dad said.

"Sure I will just go grab my bag then I am ready to go." I replied, thats when I saw today's paper on the table.

"Mom can I have the newspaper if you're done I would like to do the crossword." I asked my mother.

"Sure darling, here I am all done with it." She said as she handed me the paper. I quickly thanked her before heading upstairs.

You might be wondering who on earth still has time to do the crossword at the back of the paper, not me, i wasn't really looking for the crossword but the headline news about the Shadow. You see two years ago when this common thief arrived I started to investigate him secretly, I know that my father wouldn't approve of me doing such things, he would tell me to leave the investigative work for the real detectives.

I quickly tore out the article and added it to my binder to investigate later, I then hid it in my lowest drawer under some of my clothes.

After I stuffed it in my drawer I grabbed my backpack and headed downstairs and quickly said my goodbyes to my mother before heading outside to my dad's car.

After my dad dropped me at school I went to my locker, eventhough my house isn't so far away from school my dad insists that he takes me because it is on his way.

Gracie and Leila my two best friends were waiting for me at my locker.

"Hey Vici! " Gracie and Leila greeted.

"Hey guys." I greet back as I put my books in my locker.

"How was your weekend, dol?" Leila asks. "Great thanks, and yours?"

"Fun as always, we are going to the mall this weekend do you want to come with us?" Gracie asks.

Something you should know about Gracie and Leila they LOVE shopping, they will live in the mall if they could. Me on the other hand not so much, I only visit a mall if I have to.

Gracie and Leila were both good looking girls, far more beautiful than me with my plain brown eyes and hair. Leila had long blonde locks with bright blue eyes and Gracie on the other hand had raven black hair with stormy blue eyes.

"I don't know...." I said.

"Come on Vici, you never go with us." they begged.

"Alright I will go, but you guys are buying lunch." I say and they nod simultanouesly trying to keep in their excitement.

Ring

The bell rang and we parted ways. I headed for my first period physics.

The first three periods flew by and lunch finally arrived. I quickly grabbed something to eat at the cafeteria before heading for my seat.
Gracie and Leila were already there waiting for me.

"Hey Vici guess what?" Gracie says as I take my seat.

"What?" I ask taking a bite of my salad.

"You know Jordon Stewart?" She asks with excitement gleaming in her eyes.

"Yes the owner of that big investment company." I reply.

"Yep, they are throwing a modern ball for their handsome son, Jayden who is the new CEO of the company."

"That's cool."

"It is not just cool Victoria, it is amazing," Gracie squeled, "I wish my parents would throw me a ball."

The Stewart family was the most famous family in the city. My father was well aquintanded with Mr Stewart. My mother also handled many of their political issues. Mrs Stewart was also an amazing fashion designer, no wonder Gracie knew so much about them. Gracie absolutely adored her designs. And not to mention their son, I've heard that he was quit a good-looking guy.

"I wish I could go, but it is by invite only." Leila said.

"Maybe you will be invited." I said hopefully.

"I wouldn't bet on it. " Gracie said.

The rest of the conversation went on about what dresses they would've wore if they were invited. I didn't really know why people enjoyed it to dress up for formal events it wasn't really my cup of tea.

The bell rang and we parted ways again, I didn't really share many classes with my friends only a few here and there. After saying goodbye I headed for history, my favorite class of the day.

As soon as I turned the corner I walked straight into someone, taking a few steps back to inspect the person I just walked into, I noticed it was only Alec Williams. Alec's dad,Mike Williams, was my dad's partner until he died when Alec was 10 years old.

When Alec was about 10 years old he and his father went to the bank but on that day one of the city's gangs decided to rob that very same bank. Alec's father tried to stop them but he got shot in the process and died later that night in the hospital. The gang leader that shot him has never been seen again, my father is still searching for the leader but there is no trace to where he could be and with the Shadow showing up my father is struggling to balance all his investigations.

"Sorry, Alec I didn't see you there. " I say apologetic.

"No it's fine, how have you been?" He asks as we continue walking to towards our history class.

"Good thanks, and you?" I ask.

"Good, no complaints, how is your father?"

"He is doing fine just a bit busy these days." I reply.

"Oh, I could imagine with this Shadow in our midst, by the way how is the investigation going?"

"Still a working progress, no leads but I am sure they will find him soon. " I say as we arrive at history.

"I do hope so, please give my regards to your father. " he says.

"I will do. " I reply. He nods his head and walks to his seat.

I quickly take my seat. Alec and I've known each other for years, he is a great friend but since his father died he started to shut me out. We didn't really talk anymore, only when we walked into each other like this rare occasion.

I always had a little crush on him, but who wouldn't have, he was very well built with than skin, he had amazing blue eyes with dark hair. He looked very much like his father. I wish that there was something I could do to help him but what could I possibly do.

I quickly snapped out of my thoughts as the teacher started her lesson.

After three more periods the day was finally over and I could head home, it was only Monday and I was already tired, it must be all these assignments the teachers gave us.

My mother waited outside the school for me in her black mercedes.
"Hey darling, how was school?" She asked as she started the car.

"Same as usual and how was your day?" I asked.

"Busy as always..., oh before I forget we have to go pick out a dress for you." My mother said in a chirpy voice.

"Why?" I asked confused.
"For the ball of course." She replied casually.

"What ball?"

"The Stewart's ball."

Oh no, now I had to dress up.
