Chapter 4

It had stopped raining. The booming thunder had finally ceased and the sun was shining cheerfully down on Riverclan camp.

Mintstar was standing reagally on a large root of the willow tree, gazing at all the cats laid out in front of her. Of these cats there was Volepaw. He had dreaded this day. Flattening his ears he hesitantly tottered forward, brown fur bristling.

"I Mintstar of Riverclan will give young Volepaw a new mentor. I trust that Redstorm will pass down all of her bravery and knowledge to Volepaw." The Riverclan leaders voice rang across the clearly.

Not Redstorm! Volepaw thought bitterly, he didn't want Redstorm, he wanted Fallenclaw!

He quickly touched noses with the reddish she-cat before instantly shrinking back.

"Hmph, guess I'm your mentor now. First things first," Redstorm crouched so she was talking right in his ear, "I need new bedding, now."

It had taken ages to clear out Redstorm bedding and fetch new moss, she had a big nest for a average sized cat, Volepaw heard from Torrentclaw that his mentor often fought in her sleep, which is why she had such a big nest.

"I hope Redstorm doesn't make me do this all the time." He  muttered under his breath.

"Are we going to go hunting now?" Volepaw asked Redstorm as nicely as he could.

"Granted we get back before it starts raining again!" Redstorm pointed her paw at the dark clouds moving towards them in the distance.

"I don't mind hunting in the rain." He said indignantly.

"Go ahead, in fact, don't come back until you've caught three pieces of prey. I'm staying here." His new mentor promptly sat on the ground, staring at him with her burning green eyes.

"Yes Redstorm." He flattened his ears and his tail drooped. He slowly padded out of the camp the earth damp under his paws. He glanced back, Redstorm wasn't even looking at t him.

Sighing, Volepaw trudged through the short grass and low hanging ferns until he reached the river. The ominous boom of thunder crackled in the distance, promising wind driven rain and searing lightning.

Volepaw patiently waited at the river, waiting for the right moment. He couldn't forget about Fallenclaw, not even now, so he used one of their favorite tricks for catching big fish.

Lightning.

A crack of lightning lit up the water, at that moment Volepaw swung his paw into the river and fished a plump trout into the air, he plucked it out of the sky and brought his paws down, killing it. He then turned back to the river, he would try again.

Iceypaw was waiting for him through the downpour at the camp entrance,  she rushed to help haul his trout, the only thing he had managed to catch.

Redstorm was probably still inside the Warriors den, so maybe he could get away with only one price of fresh-kill. But he didn't, he flattened his ears again as Redtsorm's call rang from the entrance to the Warriors den.

"I said three Volepaw! You'll be making up with this when you pick the elder's ticks. Right now!"

"Don't worry," Iceypaw put her silver tail tip on his shoulder, "I'll help you."

"Thanks..." Volepaw murmured, but his mind went back to Fallenclaw.

Fallenclaw I'm coming, one day...
